Come to think of it, the Sioux were kicked out of the northern forests by the Chippewa, often had problems at the hands of the Pawnee and Blackfeet, got the credit for Little Big Horn while the Cheyenne did most of the fighting, and eventually were defeated by the US Army. If the name changes, perhaps we should look for a winner.

Yep. Those tobacco lawyers who represented the states did it on a contingency basis too, and made hundreds of millions for themselves, and then some. Same with certain anti-trust lawyers.
-
Why, "Fighting Whities", of course.

Unless you're going work for BRIDGES, Vernon Bellecourt, or Howard Dean, I doubt this issue will have any relevance in the hiring process.

As a lawyer who works for one of the largest companies on Earth, we get threatened with litigation from small claims to class actions daily. It's part of the game. Litigation is generally the last resort of a smart plaintiff, especially given the costs and relative uncertainty. If you know you are completely wrong, you settle and move on. If you think you have a decent chance of winning or forcing a favorable settlement you tell the bastards to sue you. Most cases never see the courtroom anyway, but discovery is a good chance to beat the snot out of people and achieve your ends. Having been privy to some off-line information, I am pretty certain that whomever drafted UND's earlier appeals and other correspondence is confident in their arguments, and they make more sense from a legal perspective than in the media's condensed view of the world. (And it's not some firm that advertises in the Yellow Pages or on TV.) They draw a number of different angles of attack, but focus on the fact that the NC$$ has stepped all over itself, and its rules, to achieve a given objective. My own view is that the NC$$ sees room for compromise, and that by completely folding their hand today they would have lost whatever nanogram of credibility they have left.
-
Sue the bastards, and let's finish this, once and for all.
-
The beauty of pushing the NC$$ into the courthouse, is that a court ruling not only solidifies UND's use of its name/logo against the NC$$, but also against others who might seek to sue for violations of their "rights", discrimination, emotional distress, etc. by UND for using the name/logo. Regardless of how the NC$$ waffles, delays, rules, whines, etc., I would prefer a court ruling or two in UND's favor.
-
I agree. I think Brand, et al. may be petty enough to think of some way to minimize or dilute these resolutions. Or at the very least, they may drag out some new "deadline" that nobody knew about. While I appreciate the show of support by the tribal groups, I think ultimately the best way for UND to protect its use of the name/logo is in court, unless the NC$$ finally backs off its crusade.

I'll put Morrison's $7.63 in withheld donations, against Ralph's $100 Million+ any day of the the week.
-
Yeah, and for every signature against the name/logo, you could probably get at least 15-20 alums who support it. Then again, "democracy", majority rule, etc. mean nothing to the "offended".

I'm sorry, but I really see no reason to "expand" college hockey. Hockey is a cost-intensive sport, and Title IX issues notwithstanding, most schools who might be "natural candidates" for the all-elusive BTHC such as Penn State, Iowa State, etc. are not in the position to field legitimate D1 teams. I'd rather see the number teams stay roughly the same, and some conferences re-align, instead of watering down the sport because some marketing goofball pulled inspiration from their rectal pore.

Um, see, there are these things called airplanes ... a-i-r-p-l-a-n-e-s ... that can take one great distances in a short ... s-h-o-r-t ... period of time, mmkay?

That was probably just Sparky's evil twin brother, Spooky.
-
Well, he has been "actively" occupied by Jerry Buss' daughter Jeannie the past few years.
-
Precisely. College will always be around, and I recall a few former Sioux who have returned to campus after their pro careers ended. If I was in this boat, I'd grab the money when you can, because you may not get that second chance, or your knee may decide to part company with you during a scrub game.
-
Yeah, gee it really sucks having a program that churns out NHL talent every season. Terrible. If people are so attached to "the college experience", and expect these guys to foresake their pro dreams to entertain us, perhaps they should root for UAA or Michigan Tech.
-
Hell, I'm offended by Phil wearing Birkenstocks with dark socks and a suit on the sidelines. When will he quit offending ME?!?!
-
I have to agree with the "ultimatum response". I suspect most people in favor of keeping the name/logo would probably be less aggressive in their defense of the status quo if the change were not mandated by a morally corrupt and inefficient organization.
-
Is that the "boxers or briefs" question?
-
Congrats to Wisconsin. It's always nice for the conference when the WCHA wins the hardware.
-
Exactly. Most college teams are lucky to win their own conference once in ten years, let alone making it into the playoffs with some consistency. "Curse"? Here's an ambiguous answer, go f&$% yourself.
-
Agreed. The days of the 4-year college "star" are basically gone. Anybody who's drafted the first 2-3 rounds will probably only spend 1-2 years in college. As such, I wonder if the coaches will focus more of their energies on "role" players, or those who aren't stars but whose experience can pay dividends down the round when they're juniors/seniors, instead of filling their rosters with younger uber-talent that may leave after a season or two.

Crying?!?! There's no crying in hockey!!! Although I do remember "Cryin' Brian" Gionta after the 2000 Title game with BC.
-
Nice run by the team, but it seems they just ran out of gas when it counted. Good luck, and thanks to the seniors and those who sign for the $$$ over the next few weeks. Now if we don't lose too many of the younger guys ... Again, thanks for the updates.
