  1. And meanwhile, the NC$$ should be more concerned about graduation rates, schools graduating literate athletes, recruiting practices, etc. Then again, that's not sexy enough for a bunch of wheezy academics. As a practical matter, as Jim alluded, the NC$$ probably has little/no power to regulate how much money a private individual can donate to a school, or its programs, or how it's done. However, one can make the same argument with regard to names/logos, and look where we are now.
  2. I think that's Dougie Grow on the right ... I think the key element is "affordable". Mpls has always had trendy, new eateries. However, with the closure of Peters, Goodfellows, The Keys, etc., there's always room for newer places. As a practical matter, around DT, the only chains seem to be centered around Block E and Target Center. Regardless of what the city council would like to think, the suburbanites who go to Target Center for a game, concert, etc., probably won't venture too far east of Hennepin, so chains will concentrate around there and rake in cash.
  3. A few years ago when Mpls did a BBQ fest in downtown, Peterson rented a spot for her "animal rights" crusade and then biatched about being next to trailers that were barbecuing ribs. Her yellow pages ad featured her in a fairly unprofessional, well for most "feminist" lawyers, pose that would probably entitle her to a job at Hooters.
  4. Even though he's not Nikki Coleman, Dougie Grow, makes another case for tone-deaf, post-60s political correctness. Linky Pics of the subject matter may become required.
  5. I-39? Obviously, the guy was in Wisconsin or Illinois, and thought he was in NoDak. Not only is his writing pedestrian, but his sense of geography is awful. He may want to cut down on his "medicine" while driving too ...
  6. Meh. "Real" hockey players would have been tossing around a soccer team.

    News on Toews

I tend to agree. While the loss of Toews would be painful, I think we still have a pretty solid array of players on the roster, and new guys on deck, to at least make a run for the WCHA. Toews will make the decision he deems appropriate for him, and that's the way it will be.
  8. Soccer is for pansies who can't play hockey. That is all.
  9. As Diggler alluded, outside of larger population centers, like Fargo, GF, etc., you will be hard pressed to find smaller towns with their own rinks, let alone organized hockey programs. Contrast that with northern Minnesota towns of similar size, as well as towns in Canada. Smaller towns in NoDak seem to center around FB and bouncyball.

I was going to suggest group Seppuku, but whatever.
  12. I don't how you guys can sit there and toss about names like "Warhawks" and "Peacedoves" ... don't you know some people are allergic to feathers?!? Don't you think about their feelings?
  13. When did this place turn into MySpace? Was there a memo?

    News on Toews

Agreed. As much as I wish Jonathan success in the NHL, hopefully after another year at UND, I feel bad that he got picked up by such a worthless organization. With any luck, he'll get traded at some point to a team that actually knows what's going on, or the Blackhawks finally change hands ... fat chance.
  15. Earlier on, when this "study" came to light, I passed what I was able to locate of Fryberg's "thesis" to an acquaintance who teaches at Vanderbilt, and really has no stand on name/logo issues as far as I know. Her assessment was that it's "an essay written by somebody with serious emotional issues". Here's some more info. Linky Apparently, Fryberg's "thesis" is getting some play, even if it has never been reviewed in accordance with standard testing methodology.

    Dru trial

That's how "the system" works. If he's found guilty, you can pat yourself on the ass and tell yourself what a great system it is. And if he walks, you can call Nancy Grace or O'Reilly and complain about "liberal judges", "stupid juries" and "scummy lawyers". If you call denying him his "martyrdom" and throwing him into near-solitary confinement with a concrete slab for a bed "winning", you probably belong to a "leather club". If you think terrorists and sexual predators are deterred by the specter of a needle in their arm, you really need to read up on their pathology. Their motivations are generally not curbed by the threat of sexual offender registries, do-not-call lists, jail, treatment or execution. However, as a practical matter, I have no problems if these most of these guys end up dead on a gurney in Terre Haute, Indiana after they've gone through the justice system.

    Dru trial

What color is the sky in your world? If the federal govt, with all of its resources, is seeking to exact the ultimate penalty on a person, regardless of the crime(s), I see no reason why that person should not be provided a proper and adequate defense. It's what the US Constitution requires, and it embodies what the country was built upon. It's not perfect, but I would rather see Rodriguez walk after a fair trial, than be convicted in the "court of public opinion" and executed by a bunch of Nancy Grace-watching shut ins. I've seen nothing from the defendant's attorneys that would indicate they are doing anything less that what their professional responsibilities and experience require. If you want contrived justice and kangaroo courts, I suggest you move to China or Iran.
  18. Tell me about it. You'd think this place was overrun with SCCC fans.
  19. Thanks Jordan. Good luck in the pros.

Man ... you do have really low standards.
  21. Aside from the diehard whiners, like Nicky Coleman and Vernon Bellecourt, I doubt very many people who matter will see UND as "arrogant", as opposed to seeing the NC$$ being exposed as a hypocritical, dictatorial organization. This is especially true when the NC$$ should be addressing academic standards, grad rates, etc. in keeping with its mission.
  22. I'd have to echo the previous comments, as to where Pawlenty, who will no way in hell raise taxes, will find the money for such a program. If Pawlenty is interested in keeping Minnesota's edge in education, he'd probably be better off dropping the money into primary and secondary education.

    Potts Resigns

I agree that it may make it very difficult to find a qualified replacement. The upper echelons of higher ed seem to be a pretty small world, and I would guess the Chapman-Potts controversy may give possible candidates some pause.
