  1. Of course you manage to make your way onto the Internet right when I've left my longest so far gap between updates. I was thinking about it just last night
  2. I wish I didn't have to start this by correcting a misstatement from above, but THETRIOUXPER was a member in very good standing who was actively participating in discussions right up until a couple months ago. He did have strong opinions about how the forum should be moderated, and wasn't shy with them , but his frequent sharing of those with me was actually quite instrumental in the big cleanup of the board in early '08. I never knew Troy, the person, but knew THETRIOUXPER (he liked all caps), the poster, well. In addition to him being a very active member of the community (top 40 poster, despite really only being around in force from 05-08), I also had a fair amount of private communication with him, as mentioned above. He was an extremely passionate Sioux fan, but was somewhat unique in has staunch defense of the athletes. He did more than any non-moderator I can think of to try get people to think about what they were posting and to realize that their anonymous criticisms were about real people. Nothing frustrated THETRIOUXPER more than to see fans throw players under the bus after a tough loss, knowing that the players already felt far worse than any fan could imagine, and he was quick to let those fans know that. He cared about the game, but cared more about the people in the Fighting Sioux community than whether a game was won or lost. I've missed him as we've heard less from him over the past year, and am truly saddened to hear he is no longer with us. Our community lost a passionate individual with a very unique and valuable contribution, and we will be the poorer for it. He will be missed. CHEERS TRIOUXPER

  4. You got just a little bit cut off. Here's the full text from the source: NHL.com Parise tops list of best U.S.-born players Also on the list: #2 Tim Thomas (Vermont) #4 Ryan Miller (Mich St) #5 Brian Rafalski (Wisconsin) #6 Mike Komisarek (Michigan) #8 Phil Kessel (Minn.) #10 Paul Stastny (DU) Unless I miscredited or missed one, 7/10 former NCAA players.

  6. Jul 21 If you're in Grand Forks and want to listen to some rock, KJ108 is your station, but you actually tune your dial to 107.5 Jul 22 In men's hockey, the Sioux were 10-23-1 in 73-74. Jul 23 I repeat, in men's hockey, the Sioux were 10-23-1 in 73-74. (Sorry). Jul 24 Down by as much as 10, UND won 72-58 over Lamar in a Dec. 29, 2008, women's basketball game. It was UND's first D-I victory over a Southland Conference opponent. Jul 25 The WCHA first hit 10 teams in 71 with the admittance of Notre Dame. It stayed at 10 until Michigan, Michigan State, Michigan Tech, and Notre Dame fled for the CCHA in 1980. Jul 26 Jake Caufield, former UND WR, racked up 1,070 receiving yards and nine touchdowns as a senior at Minot High in 2003. Jul 27 On 10/27/2007, Rob on Say Anything noted that UND did receive tribal approval to use the Fighting Sioux nickname, in 1969 from a band of Standing Rock Sioux (Uncpapa Sioux). It also rehashes the amusing story of the origins of the nickname. Jul 28 Travis Bledsoe scored 10 pts, all in the 2nd half, in UND men's basketball's 76-68 defeat of SIUE on Feb 19, 2009. It was UND's first win over a transitional D-I team. source Jul 29 UND football had 10 returns for 67 yards in UND's 47-7 win over Western Washington for the 40th annual Potato Bowl. source
  7. That was kind of my point -- I don't think these tweaks were enough to really move it any further from the Notre Dame logo, if Notre Dame actually cared. The two are still quite clearly the same logo, color scheme and minor font deviations aside. Instead, I see these tweaks as UND trying to revive the logo (freshen it up, as Sicatoka said) in anticipation of increased usage.
  8. The image sheet linked above does contain some language about how the interlocking ND should only be used in conjunction with another trademark. That, presumably, is for the purpose of differentiating from the other ND. I don't recall if the old sheet contained that guidance. However, my real point in replying in this thread is that I feel I'm missing something -- I don't really see how these new ND logos represent such a departure from the Notre Dame logo. Different strokes of the N and D pass in front of/behind each other than on the Notre Dame logo, but otherwise it looks to me like exactly the same logo colored green with a shadow? A modest modernization at most, IMHO, as prep for potentially having to use it as a primary logo this year, but I don't really see it as a departure from the Notre Dame logo or staking out a particularly unique look for UND.

  13. In the upper right of a thread, look for the little gray "Options" rectangle. Click that and change the display type back to "Standard".

  15. This might be getting a wee bit away from economic / environmental discussion of cap & trade and into politics
  16. As threatened, if left to me in the Doc's absence, get used to multi-day digests. 17. Unfortunately for Geoff, when there's a thread with your name in the title on a site this popular, it becomes a first page search result for your name. There is a rule against bumping threads, but I've never looked into if they could be automatically locked because every now and then there's a good reason to respond to something old. I guess in that case you could always link to it. It hasn't really been a widespread problem. Had a mod caught it more quickly, we might have deleted the post (and maybe closed the thread), but I'm not sure there's any point now. It could be kind of fun when the next post in it is in 2013.
  18. The Bemidji Pioneer has a bit different take... WCHA to continue negotiations with Omaha
  19. I *guess* you've got a pretty good excuse, I'll do my best to cover (though if I'm left to cover alone, people should expect lots of multi-day digests). Thanks for your service to our country! However, I'm a little surprised you're headed off to Iraq, I could have sworn I saw in a news story that you were in Afghanistan just last month... That's pretty cool.
  20. We'll see if I can sneak this one by Sicatoka... In it's highest scoring game of 08-09 women's basketball season, the Sioux routed Mayville State 111-27. Ouch
  21. For yesterday... (where's the Doc, haven't seen in him in about 10 days!) In 2007-08, the School of Aerospace Sciences had 1113 men enrolled, vs. 150 women. However, the School of Engineering and Mines is even more male-centric, with 843 men to a mere 103 women. Gentlemen -- School of Nursing is where the ladies are at. 674 women with only 87 potential male suitors. profile stats
  22. Yeah, you're thinking of this thread. My primary concern with the site name, if the nickname changed, would be that keeping the old name for the site would make it a lot harder for new fans to find it. Even if the name on the banner changed, the old URL would probably work forever. All that said, I'm certainly in no hurry. We'll see what happens.
  23. In Spring 2004, 1114 students made the Deans' List. Belated congratulations to Chelsea Lynn Schmidt and all the rest. 6/8/04 -- UND Names 1,114 To 2004 Spring Semester Deans' List
  24. For June 11 While visiting UND, if you want to stay in a hotel with a castle turret, your only real choice is the Settle Inn. Pick up the phone and call 800-571-1115
  25. For June 10: One of the speakers at the 2009 North Dakota Society for Human Resources Management conference was Lane Harstad, former president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1116.
