Argh -- Parise just 5-holed Theodore in a shootout in tonight's Caps game. When he lined up for the shot my wife said, "hey, I know that guy", and I said "NO! We're not cheering for him tonight".

Fresh off an 11-1 win over the Sioux, this update from Lamoureuxs was posted on FightingSioux.com: The Pursuit of Gold: The first of six Can/Am games and Qwest Tour game vs. Sioux

To repeat my post from the predictions thread: Stony Brook's audio (free, no registration required). It uses RealPlayer and when I clicked the .pls link in Firefox, I had to manually tell it to use RealPlayer to play the file, but that may just be something weird about my setup.

Stony Brook's audio (free, no registration required). It uses RealPlayer and when I clicked the .pls link in Firefox, I had to manually tell it to use RealPlayer to play the file, but that may just be something weird about my setup. Lot's of respect for UND from the Stony Brook announcers so far. They called the line as UND -1, talking about UND's recent success in D-II, players in the NFL, etc...

Oh yeah, I told doc I'd cover this week. Here we go... Sep 29 2009 The North Carolina Pembroke Braves did not face the same nickname sanctions as UND because UNC-Pembroke enrolled about 1005 Native Americans. UND has a measly 400, putting the magic bar at some unspecified number between 400 and 1005. source Sep 30 2009 On 10/04/09, in the freakin' FUTURE, UND will beat Manitoba 7-1 in the exhibition men's hockey opener. source Oct 1 2009 10/03/1914 UND football team's first points scored vs. Minnesota (6-28 loss in 7th meeting) Oct 2 2009 If you're going to UND and want to get in some Unitarian worship, stop by the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 1002 Park Drive Oct 3 2009 Coming into today's homecoming game, South Dakota had 1001 yards passing (250/game). The Sioux held USD to 173. Oct 4 2009 In 2006, Ryan Chappell became the first freshman in Sioux football history to run for 1000 yards in a season. Oct 5 2009 Mar 17, 09: The University of North Dakota golf team completed its third round of the Hiddenbrooke Intercollegiate with a final of 999 (331-336-332).

Which according to the box score is the largest home opener attendance ever at the Alerus.

A place to talk about sports that aren't related to UND (pro sports, etc...) is a no-brainer; we started down that path a little when making the non-collegiate sports a subforum of community (though it was really a de facto high school sports forum). Making it a top-level forum and trying to bring pro/other college discussions into there should work. Combining the high school sports with other non-UND sports shouldn't be a problem now that most of the high school kids have moved on to the new ND high school web site, though we can always break them out again if it becomes too overwhelming. However, I do remain somewhat resistant to forcing threads about other schools out of the primary sports forums. In contrast, the nickname/tickets forums were made so we could force talk on those topics out of the general sports forums; if a ticket thread pops up in the hockey forum we actually move it. For this, I would imagine encouraging people to visit the "other sports" forum by linking to the existing discussions there, rather than moving discussions that pop up elsewhere. Of course, seeing as bin is in the same group I am I can't actually stop him from moving things Consider women's hockey forum on the way.
-
Definitely agree -- I wasn't thinking of 18 sports forums, I was wondering about 1 or 2 more. Women's hockey and volleyball do seem the two most likely candidates, in that order. Huh. There is already plenty of that (GWFC, NDSU threads in the FB forum, Vikings threads in the community forum, etc...). Are you imagining requiring all of that to leave the UND sports forums for the "general sports" forum, or just adding the "general sports" forum as another option? I'd personally be a lot more comfortable with the latter -- letting people know they're welcome to discuss other sports topics, but not trying to move all the Gophers threads out of the hockey forum.
-
The forum is a community -- it exists and thrives thank to all of you, your contributions, and the tone you help set. However, since the topic of message board quality has come up, I do need to take this opportunity to thank those who have taken on the particularly thankless job of moderating. When their (volunteer) job is going well, the forum improves without you particularly noticing why or who is to thank. The one I'm going to call out by name is GDM, who carried the load from the beginning when I knew I couldn't do it alone. A year or so ago it became obvious the two of us couldn't do what it took to keep the forum of the quality we desired, and half a dozen or so people who agreed answered the call for help. Thanks to them all!

You could argue that the new t.v. contract doesn't need another thread, but... Currently watching last weekend's football highlights on the Sioux Sports Extra show, on D.C. cable. Wow.
-
Yeah, I should have included that in my original question. Not just "is it time for more forums", but also "which sports get them"? Attendance might be a pretty good rule of thumb.
-
Question for the people who hang out in this forum -- is it time to break out more sports into their own forums? Pro -- For example, if volleyball had its own forum, there could be threads on individual games/players/etc... instead of the current default of everything crammed into the volleyball thread. Con -- If it's generally the same group of people interested in all non-revenue sports, more forums to check means having to spend more time to discover new discussions and a possibility of fewer people discovering any given thread. I've previously thought the popularity hadn't yet reached the point where the pro outweighed the con, but thought it might be time to revisit that (plus wonder if individual forum might spur additional discussion, which has proven somewhat true in the basketball forums).

I unintentionally chopped a little bit from the paraphrase, that's pretty much exactly what Mussman said.
-
Some paraphrasing of Mussman from FB Notes: Mussman, Sioux look to improve at Homecoming. Not direct quotes: We gave away some points we don't typically give away. Punt return that got them deep and led to a score, an interception that led to a score, blown coverage. They were just trying to run the clock out and we were missing coverage and giving them scores. Missed tackling and our offense didn't do much. We're struggling with the running game more than anything. If you sit back there and pass it all day, they'll get to you, and we're not built for that. Our guys should be a little embarrassed. As coaching staff, we sure are. Get back to work, don't forget what happened, but get better and show people that we're a good defense.

Thanks, added them to the photos page.

It's been a while. By my count, you have to go back to the record-setting Sep. 13, 1986 game: Texas A&M-Kingsville 67, UND 44

Isn't that the truth? Ever since dataflix, Sioux webcasts have always seemed to be one generation behind (not to mention most expensive). However, as I said earlier, it's starting to matter less:
-
Now we just need the special teams to come up big again and go into the half down by 4
-
O-line is starting to hold up better -- I was really surprised how much they were getting pushed around earlier. With some success comes some confidence.
-
Not many positives. Credit to special teams for some big plays, but no real success on either side of the ball.
-
As the announcer just noted, UND's only offensive yardage after the turnover was the pass interference call. Not what we needed at that point, but at least it's some points on the board. The audio on the videocast stayed up when the video went black.
