  1. Kansas. It could be a competitive game, Lawrence is awesome and it's close to Kansas City, so you could do a Royals or Chiefs game on Sunday. It's also not a terrible drive from GF. Other choices would be Tennessee (just love to see a game there - size similar to Michigan Stadium, but 10x the passion), Boston College (could do on a weekend with a hockey game, that would be a blast), Washington (Seattle is another cool town with a fair number of alums), and Rutgers (for the benefit of JFR and NYC exposure).
  2. http://www.in-forum.com/articles/index.cfm?id=176745 Grafton has really stepped up. Hopefully Grand Forks and Fargo will at least match this contribution. While volunteer help is immensely helpful, unfortunately disaster recovery is also a very expensive proposition.
  3. Kids realized they couldn't get into UND, so they applied to NDSU. That also explains UND's acceptance percentage edged back up a little, as those long shots simply didn't apply, as they had earlier.
  4. I fear that may be telling you something. I don't think people really understand how devastating these things are. I sure wouldn't want to be on an island with a CAT 5 coming my way. The CNNing of news has created this expectation that reporters should throw all caution to the wind and put their lives on the line to cover stories. As someone who works with the media and more specifically works disasters, that is crazy. All too often, they get in the way of response efforts and sometimes require saving themselves. It's another case of trying to make the story rather than reporting it. That said, this storm also appears likely to hit the beleaguered Yucatan Peninsula. And the remnants of Tropical Storm Erin are still pounding Oklahoma. As we are moving into the peak of Tropical Storm season, it appears this could be a bad one.
  5. There will likely be a call for blood donation, so if you are looking for a way to help that will almost certainly be a need.
  6. I like the idea, but think the Minnesota series is a bad idea. People are already plenty jacked up for those games. I would pick another tough series to add a little extra oomph to the crowd, possibly Denver or St. Cloud. St. Cloud would make sense as we play them at home every year so it would be a truly annual event.
  7. I would bet that CSTV will carry the BC game. I can't really see any other road games being picked up by CSTV or ESPNU, with the possible exception of Minnesota.
  8. It's red white and blue for GHS. Inexplicably the school song is Anchors Aweigh.
  9. I would certainly be interested, but would definitely buy one if it came with the Denny Gunderson action figure I have the White Rose (slightly larger than Hot Wheels) one so this would be a nice complement.
  10. I'd say Grand Forks has a credible shot at both the U18 and the Women's Championship. I'd think the Juniors will go to a larger media market, in fact I could it going to the Twin Cities with the Xcel and Ridder (or Mariucci if they didn't care about different arena dimensions) Arena or possibly Denver with the Pepsi Center and Magness. I think if Grand Forks does bid again for the Juniors, it would make more sense to have the new Fargo rink as the secondary arena. Attendance in Thief River was very poor and logistics are better for the trip from Fargo to Grand Forks. It's also obviously a much bigger market and many of the people travelling will fly into Fargo anyway.
  11. The story notes that the tourney will be in the U.S. in 2011, so I'm sure they were hoping for a European bidder. I'd love to see a combined Winnipeg-Grand Forks bid for the World Championships, but not sure Winnipeg would do it with the Moose being in the playoffs at that time of the year.
  12. Not a huge shock with five early departures. It will be interesting to see how the APR affects recruiting. It seems it will put a premium on four year players.
  13. Just show them a tape of the Super Bowl. Sticking around didn't seem to hurt Peyton Manning any.
  14. Gotta just start putting some pucks on net. Schneider isn't even having to make plays. Doesn't have to be the perfect shot, at least get A shot.
  15. The Sioux D can't be so loosey-goosey when clearing the puck. They are treating it like a grenade.
  16. George Washington is the Colonials. However, there was the Kentucky Colonels of the ABA. But I'm pretty sure there have been some minor league teams called the Cavalry as well. Not many unique names that aren't of the rediculous variety, a la Heat and Wild.
  17. In all honesty, a four team playoff doesn't hold much appeal. That still wouldn't let it the Utahs and Boise States. There's no reason it can't be at least 16 just like every other level of NCAA football.
  18. He was as synonymous with the Twins as anyone save Kirby Puckett and Harmon Killebrew. While he didn't have the national exposure of a Vin Scully or Ernie Harwell, he had a smooth style that was a joy to listen to for countless summers. That quality is unfortunately becoming all to rare today. A sad day indeed.
  19. Basketball in the economic engine of the NCAA. To essentially give up in that sport would be a suicidal move. Being strong in that sport is what makes you attractive to conferences. I'm very skeptical of lacrosse being any kind of money maker at UND, as travel costs would be considerable, there are virtually no natural rivals, and the timing of the season. The beginning of the season conflicts with hockey and basketball, and then end of the season conflicts with the beginning of spring, when people want to get outside. More importantly, coaches salaries are rising across all sports. Look at the meteoric rise of hockey coaching salaries in the past 10 years. The same is happening in women's basketball, as BCS schools are now dumping money into the sport. The affect is noticeable, as former small-school powerhouses like Old Dominion and Louisiana Tech are now becoming also-rans. If it absolutely came to the point of de-emphasizing something, football would be a far more logical choice. FCS is a financial black hole, and garners only minimally more exposure than Division II. Going to the Pioneer League would still keep the sport, but open up a ton of cash from scholarships, and be a boon toward Title IX compliance.
  20. That is correct. All Frozen Four coaches along with conference coach of the year winners are finalists.
  21. I've gotten to see BC in person three times this year. They are certainly a solid club, but by no means unbeatable. If I was the Sioux coaching staff, I would try to get tape of their Beanpot game against Harvard. The Crimson did a great job bottling the Eagles up and still generating scoring chances. Gerbe is a small speedy threat in the Duncan mold, containing him will be a key. At the Hockey East finals, BC was the only team playing with much passion or intensity, so I wasn't at all surprised by the early exits of BU and UNH. I think despite getting five teams in the tourney, Hockey East was very top heavy this year. UMass really only got in because they were able to win 4 in a row over a Bishop-less Maine team. The bottom of the league couldn't hold a candle to the lower half of the WCHA. This was borne out in the respective conference tourneys. WCHA 6 and 7 both won, while 9 and 10 were able to take 1 and 2 to three games. In Hockey East, 1 and 2 blew out 7 and 8. That is ultimately what knocked Denver and CC out of the tourney.
  22. While ECAC teams may have difficultly making the Frozen Four, I don't think that applies to their officials.
  23. After doing a little research on hockeydb.com, I'd say the NCAA record belongs to Don McSween of Michigan State, at 180 games from 1983-84 to 1986-87. Coincidentally, his streak ended in the NCAA Championship game when the Spartans fell to the Hrkac Circus. With the decrease in games, it will require four trips to the frozen four and playing for a western team to match or break the record.
  24. Nope, I'm in Boston and I can't see it. They must be able to show it as it would violate there rights agreement.
  25. I saw UMass last week against New Hampshire at the Hockey East Finals. It was a horrible game to watch. There was more hitting in the mini-mites games between periods of the Bruins game the previous night. The only team that impressed me in the least was BC, and I'm not sure how much that was just the quality of the competition. BU will go down, they just aren't very good. I was really hoping UND would end up with them. Just not a lot of heart.
