  1. I will be buying the new apparel and wearing it proudly. That's just me. Everyone else do whatever the hell they want to or don't want to. Go UND! Go Hawks!

    2016 Season

Don't want to get ahead of ourselves, but I'm hoping to make Root Sports want to rethink its decision to go with Davis at Mont. State on Nov. 12 over NAU at UND. I'm sure these things are set in stone but it would be fun to make them contemplate a move.

    2016 Season

I love the progression of this season's schedule. The players will have something to get them amped up almost every week: Stony Brook: First game of the year (come out swinging like we did against WYO last season) Typically, the biggest strides are made by teams between 1st and 2nd weeks (there are exceptions, such as last year against Drake) Bowling Green: FBS opponent -- UND and FCS pride on the line. USD: First home game of the year -- a chance to get the Alerus rocking on Potato Bowl against an old NCC and Great West foe. Montana State -- First league game of the year (on the road). Leave no doubt. Cal Poly -- Back at the Alerus Center, Poly will be looking for revenge but will find it hard to run the triple option against a stout run defense and the crowd noise. Sac State -- Let's keep the ball rolling on the road against a team on the mend. SUU -- Back home to take on another team in a bit of transition after a stellar 2015 ISU -- Pay back for us Weber -- Same as above UNC -- Got to guard against a let down against a young team with lots of talent at skill positions NAU -- For all the marbles, hopefully, at home against QB Case Cooksus.
  4. Ha ha! I totally agree! Not to nitpick but I have been watching a lot of the UND FB archived games on Eversport this summer, and it was actually the second play from scrimmage. The first was a roll out pass to a slot receiver for minimal gain. Reyes totally blew up that first play. The next play was the perfect pass to Labat.
  5. No clue but I would imagine he's leaning toward SU as he's a hometown kid. If a particular academic major that UND offers exclusively is a factor then all bets are off.
  6. Brian Labat from Detroit Lakes, Minn.
  7. It was too busy and intricate to be a logo as far as best practices in the industry goes. A lot of modifications had to go into making it workable as a logo compared to the piece of art that originally inspired it. Don't get me wrong, I loved it, but as a logo it had too much happening as far as colors and minute detail that made it harder to replicate on merchandise. What made it great was that it was an honorable extension of something we were familiar with and the pride and tradition that was inherit within it due to past exploits on the playing field.
  8. Neither was Brien's FS logo .... But it evolved in our minds as a great one -- dare I say a legendary one.
  9. My contention, though, is that what makes a logo matter is what comes in the years and decades after it's released and not so much the "look" of the image. It's the "added value" of championships, shared heart-aches and favorite players who wore the logo and fought for us proudly on the playing field that makes these images something to be proud of.
  10. Much truth here. Time and tradition are amazing antidotes for unpopular change.

  12. I would think Cashman's career is done at UND. Too bad. Hope he gets the help he needs.
  13. Though I'd like to see Will get a shot a LB as much as anyone, I like his chances of making the 90-man roster at back-up FB and maybe some special teams work. http://atlantafalcons.blog.myajc.com/2016/06/27/5-things-to-know-about-the-falcons-this-week-12/
  14. The Alumni Association commissioned him to do it, not the school. The AA gifted the art to the school at a later time.
  15. That's funny.... I missed that one. It is a fun game, though.
  16. Since we're sharing anecdotes. I showed it to my 10 year old daughter, and she glanced at it and said "cool, I guess. Whatever. Can I go downstairs and play Super Mariokart, dad?" Needless to say no tears were shed.
  17. As I recall, the UND Alumni Association, under Earl Strinden, commissioned Ben to do a piece of art for them that was based on the old FS Indian head logo -- but not as a logo -- as a piece of art. Now there are some who argue, and Earl probably could tell us for sure, that Earl always hoped that Ben's work could one day be adopted as a new logo (which it eventually was). Earl gifted the art to the University at the time that Kupchella was president. Kupchella was the one who began the process of converting the artwork to a logo, but, as I am told, it was problematic at first because of all of the detail that was involved in Brien's artwork (which I detailed in my original post). UND worked with a sports logo designer to work out some of those issues until they came up with what we ultimately know today as the Ben Brien Indian head logo. I hope I'm not revising history too much... but that is my recollection from listening to folks in the know.
  18. I have said before that I did not like the Brien logo when it first came out because it was not a true logo. Ben originally made it as a work of art and not as a sports team logo. When UND adopted it as a sports logo, I was less than thrilled for many reasons. It was too intricate with too many colors to easily identify and replicate as a true sports logo on caps, t-shirts and uniforms -- way too busy. Another less important factor, was the symbolism of looking backward. Some would argue that this was a nod to history but it also conveys a sense of entrenchment and backward thinking instead of moving forward. It seams that most of Ben's attempts at logos now have this left-pointing orientation. All that said, the logo grew on me over time as and I learned to love it and be proud of it because of the history and tradition attached to it and because it represented my alma mater. But not everyone was enamored with from the get go.
  19. That's a key reason why I am ok with letting the interlocking ND go to mothballs. We had it first but Notre Dame trademarked it before we did and has made it their brand.
  20. Yeah... faculty are independent contractors who don't like to toe the University line, especially the ones with tenure, they're almost invincible. Now if you're asking me if I liked the way that that vocal minority of UND rabble talked down the old nickname and logo and the University, then I will submit to you an emphatic NO.
  21. I think what's being argued is that they can have their opinions and state them in a way that is less divisive to the community, similar to what we've seen from Bubba, Prior, Brewster and a number of UND athletes yesterday. Kind of like when I was in the Army... I had all kinds of opinions about the President and the U.S. government, and even though I was not censored and knew my 1st Amendment rights, when in the presence of media, my comments were truthful but certainly not divisive to the nation nor the commander in chief.
