  1. We were never REALLY in the conversation for Nigel Bethel. Johnny Walker (Black or Red, take your pick ) out of Colorado State looks to have taken that DB spot.
  2. There will not be a mascot. End. of. story.

  4. Haha... yup. interesting prospect, tho, FWIW.
  5. I see. I've got nothing either other than a few coaches are following him, he has something about "UND '17" on his Twitter handle and he just got released from Texas State. A former 3 star recruit out of Houston, rated #42 best College Football Player in Texas. Hmmmm?
  6. Might it be Demun Mercer, formerly of Texas State?
  7. Yes and no. I was invited to be part of one of several focus groups in which versions or "directions" for potential new logos were discussed. So I do not know which one Ed ultimately will choose but I have an idea of the direction that designers were aiming for.
  8. Well said. I love the football team's approach to the new name ( as well as other athletic programs on campus). They have decided to own it and embrace it. I see that continuing with the new logo, too.
  9. I would say "really cool" is overstating it a bit. It's certainly not terrible. I would go so far as to say it's a decent job. But then again, I was not particularly enamored with the Bennett Brien Indian head logo as a pure marketing logo, either. At first, I thought the Brien logo was too busy, or maybe too intricate, and would be hard to replicate on caps and shirts and uniforms. But, over time, it grew on me a lot, until I fell deeply in love with it (probably due to its association with our school's tradition and legacy). Obviously, many other folks felt the same way, but whether they felt that way right away or warmed up to it like I did is another matter. Maybe the same will happen this time, although, it's different in that we are carting out a whole new thing that replaces a deeply adored and iconic image. So it won't be apples to apples by any stretch. As I say, all the time now, expect this not to be readily embraced because of the deep seeded anxiety and hurt surrounding this whole transition process -- and the fact that this stuff is so damned subjective anyway.
  10. Later than usual, but just renewed my season tix (2) and purchased two additional for this season! Leave no doubt. "Can't wait." (In my best NY Jets' Bart Scott voice.)
  11. Does it really matter, guys? You're arguing a very inane point in the grand scheme of things.
  12. Just North Dakota carried with it problems that have been hashed over ad nauseam on here. I had hoped it would be dropped the first time, was miffed when it was back on the table (regardless of how genuine or disingenuous that gesture was) and was glad it was eliminated a second time. A real nickname, in the truest sense of how we all know them to be, will be better for UND in the long run, IMHO. We are already "North Dakota" and that's not changing anytime soon.
  13. Darrell is more right than he even realizes. The new logo designers, at least when I sat in on the focus group, were suggesting a Fighting Hawks secondary logo (for upper sleeve/ shoulder area, etc. presentations) that incorporated elements of a Sundog (the meteorological phenomenon, not a made up animal illustration) because they sensed there was interest in that during the voting processes and because it had a link to American Indian culture.

I told them that that if it ever got around that was being incorporated into the new logo there would be immediate backlash by a lot of the stakeholders out there because of the Sundogs connection to the student/faculty group that pushed for the name change.

  14. Yeah, I almost got turned away at the door after I failed the retinal scan and forgot the secret password!
  15. I was lucky enough to sit in on one of the aforementioned (in the article) focus groups, and I told the reps from SME that I came into the setting with a fair amount of skepticism (mind you, more of an open mind but not cynicism) as to what they'd come up with for the "Three Directions" that they were headed. After seeing the directions, I told them I was surprised that "I did not hate" the basic concepts they revealed as far as primary logo, secondary logo and Word Mark logo. The SME boss told me that, in his business, my sort of reaction could be called a victory for them, especially given the conviction, angst and controversy surrounding the old logo and the transition.
  16. Because we are awesome!
  17. I'm hoping that in Bailey's case (assuming he's from Cali) that the incentive of playing a hair closer to home in a conference that plays most of its games west of the Rockies, and many near the West Coast, will play in UND's favor.

    2016 Season

Here's a couple of flashback hot takes for you guys from my practice reports during last August fall camp, when we were all just learning about young Santiago. These quotes were what I wrote about the time Arrington, Oliviera and Iwarri were nursing injuries, and they were forced to move Santiago from WR to RB: "Santiago is very noticeable immediately with his burst and speed. New people come to practice everyday and each day someone wants to know -- "who is #22?"" "Santiago was especially effective on pass and catches out of the backfield. He's got a second and third gear that is deceiving if you're not ready for it." -- It's kind of fun now to look back to a time before John's coming-out party at Wyoming.
  19. Sorry that was cheap shot, not worthy of a 3,000th milestone comment.
  20. Maybe take it up with Obummer.
  21. I knew I'd get a bite! but I thought it might be from our pals to the south. He he. Oh well. All's good!
  22. They might lump our UND champions in with other NCAA champions from other schools and do multi-sport honor kind of thing. I think I've seen that done in the past. FWIWI, don't think I've ever seen FCS champions invited, though, come to think of it.
  23. Both Nelson and Miller attend(ed)/covered UND baseball games over the years. The other full time non hockey reporter, DeVillers, did as well, but his kid was one of the UND coaches. As for financially supporting the programs, that is not a reporter's role nor should it be. I highly doubt Wayne has ever donated a nickel to the football or basketball programs apart from the price of a hot dog or two, and Schloss hasn't given money to the hockey program either.. To your point about it being one man's opinion, this is true and, yes everyone should be able to voice theirs.
  24. This is correct. UND went with the higher tuition cap that was authorized by the State Board of Higher Education but later the State Legislature imposed the lower cap, which caused the shortfall. There wasn't enough time to reverse the process for UND so it was stuck with the original $5M shorfall.
  25. Trouble brewing in Greeley. http://www.bigskyconf.com/news/2016/4/21/MBB_0421161048.aspx
