Many a MN fan would agree with this statement - present company included.

Schmitt - Sioux coverage in GF, especially by Virg, is hardly a bastion of neutrality. I will concede the Gopher games on TV allow for coverage other WCHA schools do not enjoy - but it is a MN product they are broadcasting and selling thus (like any other "home" broadcast) a certain level of homerism should be expected.

I will admit I did not stand up and cheer but I was pulling for the Sioux. I definately was not cheering for the FSU hacks and I can't believe anyone would. I do draw the line at cheering for UW though. Like I said in another post somewhere. You may hate MN or UW or UND or whomever in the WCHA, but it's sure nice to throw (UND's 7, DU's 5, UW's 5, MN's 4, MTU's 3, CC's 2, plus the U-MI titles and NMU's title from their WCHA days) in the face of some schmuck from the east coast.

Medo Martenelli (sp?) I love the nostalgia. UND, MN, UW ruled college hockey for several years in the early '80's - especially UW & UND. It was a wonderful time to be a WCHA fan. One of the greatest quotes ever came from Dave Christian when asked about winning the Gold medal. I'm sure this is more paraphrased but when asked of the significance of winning the Gold, he looked over at Herbie and said, "In the past year, that guy [Herb Brooks] has coached in the two biggest upsets in the history of hockey." Classic and I apologize if I messed it up badly.

Just curios, where were you?

I was at that flippin' game. It ruined a chance for what could have been one of the greatest frozen four matchups in history - A MN-UND re-match. Mention Mike Legg to some Gopher fans and it gets their blood boiling, but at least that was a legitimate (and incredible) play. That NMU game just pi$$es me off. Rant over.

PCM - Some of us bash individual Sioux fans unintentially. It always surprises me when fans take it personally if a MN fans don't cheer for UND or UND fans don't cheer for MN. Big flippin' deeal. I don't like it when rain spoils a tee time, but there's not much I can do about it so why worry? And speaking of tee-times.......
-
Not all Gopher fans did - I know one very well who didn't cheer for FSU. And as the game went on, fewer and fewer Gopher fans were cheering for the lumberjacks from FSU.

An outsiders perspective. As Parise adds strength he will be just fine. It's unbeleivable what he was asked to do this year and how well he did it. He has an amazing ability to get open for a shot, even when he's being keyed on. In that aspect, he reminds me a lot of Brett Hull. He somehow slips into a small openig and bang - pulls the trigger. It's even more amazing when you consider everyone on the ice is looking for him.

Good call WPoS. Post here how you'd want UND fans to post on POI.

I wasn't clear. I don't think either goalie is capable of stealing a game, It's MN's team defense that allows them to be respectable, but neither will never be spectacular.
-
Get in line. MN has been steller defensively in its zone and the goalies have benefited from this.
-
There was ample evidence of this in the concourse Friday night after the MN-MSU game. It was amatuer night in St. Paul.
-
sprig - looks like you have to cheer for Mich.

Wow, imagined if the Sioux and Gophers had actually played a game? I'm not a UND fan, but I certainly respect the program and it success. UND, UW and MN fans need to look at it this way: When you get into a discussion (read - arguement) with some rube from the east it's always nice to throw UND's 7 titles and UW's 5 titles, & MN's 4 titles at them. I look forward to some epic MN-UND battles next year and it would not surprise me if both MN & UND grabbed a top regional seed next year.
-
sprig - that is what the UND fans behind me said and why I mentioned when I arrived. It also looked like the FSU goalie slept with his horseshoe before the game - he had some serious mojo going. One additional observation. Since Blais has been the coach the Sioux have lived off hitting the late charging forward cutting down the heart of the slot with nice pass while the rest of gang green crashes the night and causes confusion in front. FSU did an excellent job backchecing and containing the trailer (Woog refers to them as the 'second wave' on TV) and preventing this. UND still got a lot of shots, but many seemed to be from way outside and UND ended up using more drop passes and therefor lost their speed advantage.
-
What happened to UND's defensemen? I realize Hale has been out for 8 weeks, but the rest of them almost seemed indifferent to me. Several times the puck would be near one of them and it was almost like the didn't even notice it. I couldn't get there until midway through the 2nd, but I counted at least 5 breakaways and almost all due to poor positioning or both d-men going for the puck or same guy. I remember being impressed with their play in Januaury - good outlet passes, covered well in front, played the body, etc - and none of that was present yesterday.

I don't recall hearing he double digits chant, must have been localized. In fact, MN fans gave the MC several nice ovations after making spectacular saves. By the third most of the (remaining) MN fans were indiffernt as it was over barring a late MC touchdown.

Figures - the link works for me and I coudn't care less.

Road are great around town - there will be no problem. However, watch out for cheesehead hoops fans - They're dangerous on the roads and 1/2 of them are sulking.
-
I heard it about two years ago - it was a vikes - packer jocke then.

Dave & Goon - Great posts gentlemen. Very thoughtful and intersting. To me, it always comes down to the game being bigger than the rivalries. I feel as long as I remember this, I can keep the rest in perspective. I don't care who does or doesn't cheer for MN or UND or any other team, just don't forget they game is the key. Goon - You'd rather see U-MI win a NCAA game than JBSU. Way to go waaaaaay out on that limb!

Holy crap!! I'm on the second page.

Thanks, you're right. I had MTU in my head, and that sure didn't make sense.
