  1. When I coached with Dick Vinger and Pat Sullivan years ago, Dick had a philosophy which I think still holds true, especially for those who are watching rather than playing or coaching: “When you win say little, when you lose say less”.
  2. We had a guy on ss.com calling people fairies a few weeks ago. Are they the same guy
  3. Offut is a Concordia guy and Tharaldson is a Valley City State guy. Offut played FB at Concordia. They are philanthropic but neither came across as an NDSU guy. I wouldn’t know for sure but having visited with both of them a few times at lunch/dinner or social functions I doubt they would waste money to move NDSU FB to FBS. They have donated to colleges for scholarships/buildings/academic programs.
  4. We weren’t better than SDSU. The goal is to keep getting better each week and maybe we can play them again. In the meantime, we need to be better than UNI Saturday. I may have misunderstood the reference so I was referring to FB not tailgating.
  5. Some do, but often it’s the folks who complain about a lot of things. It doesn’t matter where you are from. What matters is whether or not you can coach, and whether or not you can recruit. One of the impressive things is how many of these players were found, then recruited, and now finally developed into the team we saw Saturday. We do hear complaints about how many offers from other schools these guys may or may not have had. Once the players arrive on campus it doesn’t matter. The coaches like working with each other and they get along. When our guys didn’t play well against Boise or SDSU they weren’t bitching about other guys “who’s going to be here Monday nonsense” we heard from the losing team Saturday. They stuck together, had each others back, owned their own mistakes, and worked to get better and improve as a team. The Bison are a good FB team and they have talent. This win is a credit to our players, coaches, and even our fans (especially the students) who showed up big time on Saturday. This is still a work on progress to bring our program back to a championship caliber team. More to come. Go Hawks!
  6. Correct. This team is capable of running the table on the remaining games. They will do that if they follow the lead of the coaching staff. “Day by day” means you do the things that help you get better each day. You do the things that help your teammates get better each day. Our defense took some big steps last weekend against one of the better teams in FCS. They need to play better this Saturday if we are going to win. We tackled better Saturday and need to get better. We gave up a couple of passes to open receivers and one long TD run. We need to get that corrected. Special teams had a great day but can still improve an d if we can do that we have an excellent chance of knocking off UNI. One of the biggest challenges to our players will be to stay focused and filter out the noise/buzz/ what might be nonsense and prepare for UNI Others have pointed out how special the win was Saturday with regards to the fan experience, recruiting (especially recruits who were there), the importance to the University, the Alumni, and the community and region. It was something to build on game to game. The fan support is important to the team and coaches. The University, the community, and especially the students contributed to a winning environment which helps motivate the team. Go Hawks!
  7. Phil isn’t egotistical. He doesn’t need to feed his ego. Nice guy. Family man. Community minded.
  8. Doubtful. He has a special needs daughter, referees HS sports, owns lots of valuable farm land. He took a run at the state senate and feels strongly about a number of political issues.
  9. Bubba ball, Kostich being Kostich ?
  10. Keep an eye on Augie. Raboin is young, a great recruiter, and relates well to the players. They like and respect him. They will have a new facility, a young very personable AD in Josh Morton, and Sanford’s financial support and interest in putting their thumbprint on college hockey. USHL team in town so those kids are familiar with Sioux Falls. Augie coaches can watch the USHL teams frequently to assess talent. Augie is also a good school. It will be interesting to see how long it takes but they have a lot of the pieces falling into place that are necessary for success. Time will tell.
  11. That’s kinda been Bubba’s philosophy during his tenure. Don’t get too high after a win, too low after a loss and get ready for the next one. I believe he and the staff have tried to instill that into the team culture.
  12. Except maybe by those who mattered.
  13. My brother and nephew both attended. My brother said it could be tough and sometimes a pain, but he’s glad he went. Almost all of the guys in his class ended up in Vietnam. I’ve had the privilege of attending their annual get together at the Army-Navy game. I just sit back and listen. Going again this year. Game is in Boston and is sold out. Tix in upper level going for $500-$1200. If you ever get a chance to go I highly recommend it. Go early to see the entrance of the Cadets and Midshipmen. I would recommend attending one of the academy’s for any self motivated, self disciplined high school kid who wants to attend one of the top Universities in the world.
  14. I’m not sure excited is the right word but they like or dislike uniforms. Once on the field you forget about them.
  15. I just hope they show up and get into the game/get loud.
  16. All students start as first year students (plebes) and go four years even if they transfer in from another school. They can opt out after first 2 years but after that they have the 8yr obligation. Tuition, books, room and board plus just under $1100 per month for all students. They can leave in 3rd or 4th yr but would have to serve as enlisted soldier for 2 yrs and may have to pay back school for costs of education. I wouldn’t think they will get anyone through the transfer portal.
  17. Uncalled for. With a little imagination I’m sure you can think of something more original or even mildly funny.
  18. Maybe, if he is good enough, but what does Kaminski have that makes you think he will play ahead of either Feeney or Romfo?
  19. I’m less concerned about Tommy’s running than getting the run game going for our RB’s. Your point is well taken in that teams don’t tend to worry about Tommy running. Tommy is typically running to avoid trouble. He isn’t a powerful runner nor does he have the speed and quickness of the better running QB’s. I don’t believe any D coordinator is designing a defense with a guy to pay attention to Tommy’s running potential. I still think the most important key to our success offensively is our line play. With an effective run game it allows Danny to open up the play book and gives whoever is QB time to go from wheel routes, bubble screens, and short crossing patterns to the 15-20yd deeper pattern. I share your concerns but for now it seems it’s Tommy so my comments are more on what he can do and what the team and staff need to do to help him be successful.
  20. To state “Tommy doesn’t like to run” is nonsense. Unless he says that we don’t know. Running isn’t his strength. If need Tommy to run for 180yds we are in for a long afternoon. If we get 180yds from one of our RB’s we should be in good shape. If that happens we will get yardage from our other RB’s and that should help our passing game, hopefully by slowing down the pass rush and giving Tommy more time to get through his reads. I don’t think he needs to run for 180yds but if he can avoid turnovers and avoid the rush he can be effective. He can throw 30-40 yds When he has time. It also allows receivers more time to get open. The majority of long pass plays aren’t cuz the QB is throwing the ball 40-50yds to wide open receivers. If one looks at yesterday’s NFL box scores they list longest reception for all receivers. There were only 6 guys who caught a pass that went over 40yds and only 2 that went over 60yds. I would rather get to our reads faster, and see our receivers accelerate off of their breaks into the open seems against zone and away from defenders against man. I think that is one of the things that makes Belquist so effective. We have guys who can run a 4.5 maybe 4.4 40’s. We need to get open in the 10-25 yd areas. The 4.4-4.5 speed puts pressure on the defenders to respect the deep ball. but most long passes are from YAC not a guy who beats everyone on a go pattern. I agree with most who feel the key, as in most games, is the LOS. If we avoid turnovers, protect our QB and get a push off the LOS in the run game we will be tough to stop. Our defense must be able to stop the run and pressure their QB without letting them break free. They do throw to their TE and they will likely try to get guys open in crossing patterns. If we can do that, avoid any mistakes in punt/kick off, I like our chances. Lots of rhetoric to state we need a complete game every play from everyone of our guys.
  21. He is averaging over 10 yds per completion and over 7 yds per attempt. I don’t believe he will put a team on his back and win games. What he does well is protect the ball and he doesn’t lose games for you. I think Feeney has a bigger upside but I’m not at practice everyday. Feeney needs to be patient and hopefully his time will come sooner rather than later. Don’t forget Romfo has also shown promise.
  22. You don’t get to start cuz of your potential. Give the kid a chance to adjust to the speed and complexity of the college game.
  23. No it isn’t impossible. We are trying to consistently beat the good FCS teams and a good FBS team once in awhile. I don’t see anyone claiming Kaminski isn’t very good with a great upside. The reason he isn’t playing now is that he isn’t ready and there are 3 guys in front of him who are ready. He may get some time yet this year as long as he doesn’t lose eligibility. Where do you get the idea that if he doesn’t play as a freshman he will leave?Feeney didn’t play as a freshman and stayed. I would expect the same from Kaminski. Both of them have coaches who should be able to guide them. No one knows if SDSU would have won a title had he stayed healthy. Maybe, maybe not. Grownowski probably would not have moved up if the starter, the back up, and the 3 were all completing over 70% of their passes with no ints.
  24. Didn’t remember either incident.
  25. When was the big fire at Sigma Nu and when did a guy get stabbed?
