There will be no requirement for candidates to have present or prior UND coaching/playing experience. There won’t be set minimum/maximum age limits but younger guys will need to have built an impressive resume in a shorter period. Although there won’t be a set maximum age we don’t want guys who don’t have the energy, don’t have the passion and can’t relate to players and their families. No reason to limit our chances due to preconceived prejudices.

HC chooses his own staff. Present staff knows it. HC may keep some of present staff. Depends on who and how many he brings with him. Keeping guys who can recruit and who are liked and respected by players can help with transition and recruiting.
-
Not sure why they would pick 8 years, but experience would be a key factor.

With speed and quickness.

If we hire a coach who doesn’t think we can “out recruit” the other top FCS programs then we probably won’t. We recently have started to win some of those battles. The coach who we hire better be able to coach FB. He needs to b flexible enough to adjust schemes that will put his personnel in a position to succeed. 3-4, 4-3, even 3-3-5 when needed and whatever combo of offensive schemes that fit his personnel.

You are correct. I have stated more than once that we aren’t looking for someone with UND ties, we are looking for the best candidate to turn this program around. UND ties not required but not a disqualifying factor either. I have previously stated what I think we should be looking for in a head coach and we have listed similar qualities. Where we seem to differ is that I don’t care whether or not they have “UND ties”.
-
Then we could miss the next “DeBoer”. The next head coach needs to be the best person for the job regardless of what schools he has played or coached at. Fortunately, no one with that philosophy will be making the decision.
-
I’m not sure how you know that none of those coaches “didn’t do one thing or call out one thing”. Those are discussions, that can get pretty heated sometimes, occur in staff meetings. Players get those messages in the film room all of the time. They also get those messages in group meetings with position coaches or private meetings with one of the coaches. I don’t know who on the staff should or shouldn’t receive consideration moving forward, if any. Fortunately, those decisions are up to the new HC.
-
Another viable candidate if he’s interested.

The only pressing issue right now in addition to getting head coach and new staff hired is signing the recruits, end of year meetings, and maintaining communication with recruits and players. You and Gundy make good points. Bubba needs to communicate with the recruits but someone on the staff needs to also organize Wed signing day and help present staff and team hold things together, find new jobs etc. Bubba could help especially with staff transition.
-
Normally, when coaches are let go, you cut the cord. I don’t know how all of this will play out so I don’t know why announcement was made yesterday.
-
Actually you do. Someone needs to make sure end of season meetings take place and all recruits are contacted to try to get commits signed Wednesday . It’s important someone is in charge of all of that.
-
Earlier today Schmidt had not been contacted by UND. That’s why I said if Chaves had made his decision, it wouldn’t be Schmidt and I thought probably Baldwin. I don’t know if Chaves has someone lined up or not. If not I think Schmidt deserves consideration along with others. However we don’t know who would apply.
-
I don’t believe that is accurate. Nor do I think he sees this as his final destination if he were to be selected. I do believe he would want to stay long enough to get UND back into the National Championship picture before moving up.
-
If Chaves has his man, then I don’t think it’s Schmidt. If he is going to review applicants and interview finalists, I think Schmidt would be one of them DeBoer’s high opinion of him carries more weight than us rubes on this forum. It is more important than his UND connections or the fact that the new staff at SDSU hasn’t turned the program around in 1 year.
-
I believe you might be correct although the let’s have a talk negotiations reportedly had been concluded before Thanksgiving. If Chaves has already made his decision, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Baldwin. They’ve worked together when Baldwin’s team won a national title at East Wash. Hopefully, they can make an announcement tomorrow so new coach can contact recruits.
-
I thought Woodley was the HC but I could be wrong.
-
I don’t believe Johansen has HC experience either, but I would still look at him. I would also look at Schmidt and Schleusner regardless of no HC experience either. All 3 of these guys are Coordinators with an upward trajectory. Candidates who have had success as a head coach and D1 coaching experience as a coordinator would have an advantage over guys who have never been a HC. A couple of thoughts: I don’t care if they have a UND connection or not. I want the best available of the applicants to become the next HC. The guy (Gene Murphy) who turned our struggling program around in 2 years (albeit a long time ago) was a former player and long time asst with no HC experience. Roger Thomas had UND connections and turned the program around, but it took longer. Having UND connections can’t be a requirement nor should it disqualify anyone.
-
He was also put in a position to succeed. Had Feeney or Kaminski been the QB, they would have been in a position to fail which includes the opportunity to succeed. No different for Romfo.
-
I have no idea if Chaves have potential candidates in mind. It’s a good idea to be aware who is out there and may be available. There may be opportunities to establish relationships ahead of time and they can network with friends at all levels. Coaches do the same in keeping guys in mind for assistant positions in case someone leaves the staff.
-
Frequently does but not always. New coaches bring in their guys and one maybe 2 of the remaining positions may be given to present staff member. Up to new HC.
-
Points well taken. He hasn’t really had enough time as SDSU to judge his DC results yet. He isn’t similar to Bubba as far as personality nor (do I believe) ability). Please understand, I’m not saying he would be the best choice, I’m saying he is worth consideration.
-
Won 5 or 6 Big Sky Championships and a National Championship at Eastern Washington. Prior to that led Central Washington to a 10-3 record and quarter finals of D2 playoffs. Turning Cal Poly around would be a tall task for many. Certainly has necessary experience as HC at FCS and OC ( didn’t have success) at FBS level and pro experience in CFL. I don’t know if he would apply but I wouldn’t be surprised if Chaves would reach out. He is another guy I believe would warrant consideration. (Might have recruiting contacts in Canada).
-
Not sure what that means, but in doesn’t diminish his contributions to DeBoer’s successes. There is a reason DeBoer brought him along to Washington. He obviously valued his contributions. I believe he wanted to accelerate his career opportunities so took the DC opportunity at SDSU. I’m not sure he will take an FCS HC rebuilding opportunity for less money. He might. Others here that know him better think he might.
