  1. The coaches teach them when to break down, to wrap up when they tackle, and finish. Just like offensive linemen are taught to keep their feet moving and finish their blocks. It’s basic fundamental FB. I’m not sure why we are still struggling. My earlier point was that although Geaux-Sioux makes valid points, I’m not convinced our size is the problem. I just reviewed the Bison depth chart for tomorrow. We are actually as big or bigger. At some point the players need to go out and do their job. If you can’t block and tackle it doesn’t matter what offense or defense you run or what plays are called, you will struggle. I believe we are capable of winning this game. All 11 guys can beat their opponent on a given play. They need to dig deep and make that happen each play and trust their teammates to do the same.
  2. I just reviewed our depth chart for this game. We rotate the front 7 on defense and use 3 TEs. I did compare with the SDak state depth chart and we are similar to the top FCS team size wise. I couldn’t easily find the USD depth chart but here is ours: TE: 255 250 245. T: 305 305. G: 300 320. C: 315. DE: 260 270 250 245. NG: 315 290. OLB: 220 220 225 225. ILB: 230 230 235 235 I don’t think our size is the issue it had been. We are big enough. Bigger can be better if quickness and speed also improve. Defensively, I believe our biggest problems are we don’t tackle well, we overrun plays that take us out of position and we lose outside contain or have poor angles on the ball carrier or QB in the pocket or scrambling. Too often we don’t wrap up on the ball carrier. Offensively we have been decent except for UNI game but Oline has to have their best game against a good defense. UND 24-20.
  3. Agree, but wasn’t it his choice to decommit? Was it true that UND wanted him to play juniors last year and come this year? Considering his play last year, UND seems to have been correct. It would be great to have him at UND. You probably have the inside info.
  4. That’s also a reason when, all else is equal, many coaches choose the multi sport athlete over the hockey only kid. There is a higher upside to the multi sport kid once he focuses on one sport. Studies show single sport athletes peak earlier than multi sport athletes in addition to being more prone to injuries.
  5. Their start has been impressive for a new program. Garret Raboin is an outstanding coach, well liked and highly respected by his players. Josh Morton (former UND FB) is the AD and will give the program the support they need to develop a competitive program.
  6. I don’t have anything to do with either the good old boys, nor the hiring or firing of coaches. I had nothing to do with firing the last coach nor the hiring of any of this staff. They don’t ask for my opinion, they ask for my money. I happen to agree with the rest of your post. If we can’t win out we have no reason to complain if we don’t make the playoffs.
  7. You his said there are “some idiots” on this forum. It seems you agree with Kelly. If you aren’t going to provide your résumé/CV then say so and we move on. Don’t get your grundies in a bunch when some of us want clarification of your posts. I don’t care if you and your pals feel better debating my comments, making derogatory/critical comments toward me, especially if I say stuff that sounds stupid. It’s a social media forum. It might be interesting to debate the future of the program over a couple of beers but you lose me with the name calling and comments about mediocrity, laziness, cowards etc. We have derailed this thread so I’m done. PM me if you wish to debate, trade barbs etc. Same for the rest of your posse. I apologize to the rest for my part in derailing the thread.
  8. Sorry, but I don’t qualify as a “cotton top”. I didn’t respond to a post about me. A guy says he is going to show us his résumé/CV I took him for his word. I would like to read it. I’m not defending the 360 guys I haven’t heard their podcast. I normally don’t listen to podcasts. Has nothing to do with egos.
  9. Nothing tricky. Guy says he will provide his résumé/CV “any day”. Time to man up. Kelly isn’t the guy bragging about his CV.
  10. What did they do? Who was it that called others fairies cuz they don’t agree with an opinion? You said you would put your résumé/CV up against Kelly’s “any day”. Well, todays is the day. Let’s hear what makes you and for that matter your little group of self proclaimed experts so much more knowledgeable than everyone else. I’ve seen no evidence that you nor your pals, collectively or individually, know more about FB than others here. Those who proclaim themselves as experts it usually means they are only experts in their own minds You and your pals make valid points at times but your recurrent nonsense about how those who don’t agree with you at times means they are satisfied with mediocrity, admin and coaches are afraid, are cowards, can’t lead, are too old, etc. detract from your valid points. It lends one to wonder about your sparkling CV. Kelly can fill in the blanks if he wishes, but I remember part of his. Kelly was a 3 time all-Conf player and a 2 time All-American for UND. He was an outstanding FB, Basketball and baseball player for Bismarck Century. He worked for an Engineering firm in DL and has returned to Fargo with an insurance firm that just made a huge donation for HPC phase 2. You said you would put your résumé/CV(credentials) up. Are you a man of your word or not? If not, your credentials mean nothing.
  11. Check your post on p 41 of the Boise State thread from Sept 16: “we’re realistic and probably know football more than you and the other clueless clowns on here”.
  12. I have watched them. I know you have claimed you know more about football than the rest of us, but with all due respect, I will trust my own judgement based on my experience. It also involves watching practice, games, warmups (and additional experiences). Same for you. That means your opinion and my opinion are not more valid than the rest of the so called “clueless clowns” that someone called the rest of us not too long ago. We will see over time.
  13. I have assumed Kaminski is very good based on his HS play which is no better than Feeney or Romfo. Feeney and Romfo have both played well at this level thus far. Kaminski will get his chance. If he is as good as you think he is, then I would wonder why the Badgers wouldn’t have gone after him. They could use help at QB. That doesn’t mean he won’t become our starter but if he is so good he should be named a starter ahead of 2 proven winners who have already played well at this level, then I’m surprised Wisconsin, Minnesota, or Iowa didn’t go after him. They all have mediocre QB’s right now. No one has yet earned the starting job for game one next fall. I have watched all three throw to receivers in practice/warmups and I haven’t seen anything that would make me think it’s a done deal. It’s a discussion for a later date.
  14. Coaches aren’t “afraid “. There is no reason to move a true freshman ahead of other players who, when given the opportunity, have excelled. As a coach, you don’t do that to players who have earned the opportunity and have performed well when given the chance. This isn’t the time to experiment with an unproven freshman. If our staff do something that stupid, they will lose backups at multiple positions who have been working their way into the lineup. The fiasco at UNI was a failure at every level. Coaching, obviously the buck stops there. Take you pick of where we stumbled. Most players, who are any good, take responsibility for their mistakes. They don’t blame the coaches, they don’t blame the travel, the weather, etc. We collectively laid an egg across the board. The win against the Bison doesn’t lead to an emotional let down if you want to be successful. It should have been a huge emotional boost knowing you dominated one of the better teams in the FCS. The responsibility falls on the coaches, team captains, and the players. Defensively we missed tackles, missed assignments, over ran plays and allowed receivers to be wide open. Most of that is on the players. No one coaches them to play like that. In fact, players from HS on up are coached not to make those mistakes. Special teams failed to make a 34 yd FG and punted horribly. I watched the game with a former All-Pro punter and he didn’t expect 32-36 yd punts at this level. Punters at this level and above need to understand the importance of getting your team out of a jam or putting your opponent in a hole. Offensively we missed blocks, dropped passes, turned the ball over twice, missed open receivers and didn’t get through our reads quickly enough. This team has the ability to right the ship. They need to accept the responsibility for their poor play. I would have changed QB’s at start of or early in second half to see if Feeney could have provided the spark the team needed. If not they could have evaluated his ability under adverse conditions with the team not playing well to see if that can provide an ability to stretch the field. We need to win out to assure a playoff spot. This team and staff need to see that as an opportunity to prove we are moving the program forward and can play at a championship level.
  15. Boosters/fans don’t make decisions (nor should they). They certainly can create pressure on the decision makers if they organize and provide enough of the necessary resources that would create a significant hardship if withheld or create important opportunities if given.
  16. We had seats to the left of the Michigan bench. A guy in our row yelled at them “does the Michigan FB team know a bunch of pussies are wearing their helmets”).
  17. Most players and coaches probably have no idea who these media rubes are. I don’t know who they are other than the forum guys. (Not cuz I’m old, it’s cuz I don’t give a rats ass what they think). Team has moved beyond the media static from Bison game.
  18. Should try to get the kids from Rolette, F North, and Rocori to upgrade before signing date. Still time to flip a couple.
  19. Certainly a concern. An area we need to show significant improvement. Hopefully we can be consistent from 40 and in and hit >60% or better on anything longer. That should be the minimum. We should be able to achieve that. Very few extra points would be short from inside 40. So I would say it’s a concern but I wouldn’t hesitate on any FG from 45 on in. Having said that I don’t watch these guys practice so maybe others have better insight.
  20. When I coached with Dick Vinger and Pat Sullivan years ago, Dick had a philosophy which I think still holds true, especially for those who are watching rather than playing or coaching: “When you win say little, when you lose say less”.
  21. We had a guy on ss.com calling people fairies a few weeks ago. Are they the same guy
  22. Offut is a Concordia guy and Tharaldson is a Valley City State guy. Offut played FB at Concordia. They are philanthropic but neither came across as an NDSU guy. I wouldn’t know for sure but having visited with both of them a few times at lunch/dinner or social functions I doubt they would waste money to move NDSU FB to FBS. They have donated to colleges for scholarships/buildings/academic programs.
  23. We weren’t better than SDSU. The goal is to keep getting better each week and maybe we can play them again. In the meantime, we need to be better than UNI Saturday. I may have misunderstood the reference so I was referring to FB not tailgating.
  24. Some do, but often it’s the folks who complain about a lot of things. It doesn’t matter where you are from. What matters is whether or not you can coach, and whether or not you can recruit. One of the impressive things is how many of these players were found, then recruited, and now finally developed into the team we saw Saturday. We do hear complaints about how many offers from other schools these guys may or may not have had. Once the players arrive on campus it doesn’t matter. The coaches like working with each other and they get along. When our guys didn’t play well against Boise or SDSU they weren’t bitching about other guys “who’s going to be here Monday nonsense” we heard from the losing team Saturday. They stuck together, had each others back, owned their own mistakes, and worked to get better and improve as a team. The Bison are a good FB team and they have talent. This win is a credit to our players, coaches, and even our fans (especially the students) who showed up big time on Saturday. This is still a work on progress to bring our program back to a championship caliber team. More to come. Go Hawks!
