  1. Alumni are already pissed. Started before today.
  2. Where do you get the stupid idea I don’t have a problem with our performance this season? If so, you aren’t very perceptive. If you feel better saying the same thing over and over again have at it. I don’t like or dislike it. I don’t care that much I don’t see the point.
  3. That’s not what I’m saying indirectly either. I’m not comparing his future play to anything. Geez buddy, you’ve made your same point regarding the program, coaches, admin, expectations, culture, over and over again. It isn’t whether or not people disagree with you, but what’s the point in stating the same rhetoric multiple times in the same thread? Some of us try to follow from out of town to get a perspective that guys at the game, or those who stream it, or can watch on TV get. Even the casual fan can see the issues the program has been having the past few seasons so you really don’t add anything posting the same comments multiple times in multiple threads. None of what any of us, including you and I, post on a fan site makes a bit of difference to the decision makers, nor should it. Make an appointment with decision makers, send a text, email, send a letter whatever, if we want changes made. If enough fans do that it has an impact. Anonymous communication is ignored. Just my nickel’s worth.
  4. ISU believes if they win out, they finish 7-5 and a shot at the playoffs. UND needs to come in with the idea they need to get much better especially the front 7 on defense and the oline offensively. I watched the Youngstown-USD game and it was obvious they were very capable, especially offensively. I would have assigned the quickest/fastest LB that can tackle, as a “spy” for their QB the entire game and moved him all over the field pre-snap in a 3-3-5 lineup with that LB as the “wolf “. I would consider the same tactic if the ISU QB is causing our run defense problems. Might be too late to incorporate that if they haven’t worked on it. The 3-4 or 3-3-5 are both utilized by smaller, quicker teams but if you can’t tackle or put pressure on the qb, it doesn’t matter what alignment you use. This game and the remaining games on our schedule are winnable but we need to be at the top of our game. Go Hawks!
  5. If Trey excels at St. John’s then I’m not so sure. If he doesn’t, then yes. I would bet if he has an oline to protect him, he will do very well.
  6. Could be although, I’d be surprised if a HS coach of Kevin’s intelligence and experience would say a player is promised a starting position. Most players are smart enough to see that as a big red flag and Kevin would have seen that as a red flag. What coaches tend to tell kids is that they believe they have the ability to take over the starting job in whatever time frame as long as they continue to improve, do what is required in practice, weight room, classroom etc. That’s the same general speech athletes hear when they want more playing time etc. Having said that, I hope non of our coaches say anything stupid like that. I remember Danny commenting about how well Romfo performed in practice and how they “need to figure out a way to get him on the field”. I strongly felt that if the competition between Feeney, Romfo and Kaminski was that close, it should have been Feeney’s job to lose. He was the only one with much playing time and had done well when given the chance. I also think (no evidence) that there was a lack of communication in how this was handled. One of the biggest mistakes teams can make is for players who put in all of the work year after year feel they are no longer an integral part of the program. That ship unfortunately, has sailed. I understand that an athlete with Trey’s history of success isn’t going to finish his career as a backup. He loves the game and wants to play.
  7. Length of grass should be at the direction of the head coach depending on whether he or she wants to slow pace of play. If the demand is artificial turf, that isn’t a legitimate complaint as long as the field is properly tended to. Having a physician on the sideline isn’t necessary as long as you have an experienced quality athletic trainer. With soccer, the most important, potentially serious injury would be a head or neck injury. A serious neck injury is extremely rare. A concussion is not uncommon. There is no reason to allow any player with a questionable concussion to return to play. Concussions without other neurological deterioration, don’t need emergency evaluation. An athletic trainer should have the appropriate training and experience to evaluate concussions. A mid-level provider, Physician’s Asst (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP), with sports med and/or Sports Med experience would be a good idea for Men’s or Women’s soccer. They could provide supervision for the trainer and suture lacerations on the sidelines if necessary. Restrooms on the sidelines would be rare. Restrooms close by are reasonable. The rentable trailers with sinks, mirrors, private stalls that many outdoor weddings/events have for all home soccer games dedicated to the team should take care of that complaint.
  8. My insight is simply that if the coach and team have fun with it who cares? That we have fans who don’t like it is irrelevant. We aren’t part of the team and I’m pretty sure players and coaches don’t care what we think about it. Yeah, I really believe it’s a portal issue though.
  9. You have a good point. Make sure the team is fired up AFTER the game. Maybe that’s why we lose guys to the portal. They transfer to a school where the coach does a pole dance.
  10. Frankly, I doubt any of the “geezers” give a rats behind.
  11. Agree. All that does is get some of the backups fired up to stand for the national anthem. At this level, players should be prepared, intense and mentally focused on their assignments and how they are going to dominate their opponents. Each player does that a bit differently and I believe the captains/seniors/team leaders should lead the team onto the field. Those are the guys who have to keep the energy level up every time they run onto the field throughout the game. No coach has ever won a game before the national anthem.
  12. See Burd’s response.
  13. Harkness had given Miller a “conditional “ yes to the offer. He wanted to review offer and he was not happy when he learned UND had hired Gino. Harkness was Miller’s choice after Armstrong. The story was that UND faculty and ultimately Clifford had an issue with so many of Harness’s players enrolled in school but not attending classes nor passing courses or earning credits. Back then, the NCAA rules required that athletes only needed to be enrolled to be eligible.
  14. That was Murray Armstrong. He was our first choice, supposedly his wife vetoed the move.
  15. I shudder to think where the program would have gone had Clifford caved to fan pressure back then. The “hockey experts” in our fan base nearly rioted when Tom Clifford overruled Carl Miller’s choice of Ned Harkness as head coach and gave the job to Gino. One guy set up a table in Gamble Hall trying to get people to sign a petition to force Clifford to reconsider his decision.
  16. Augustana hockey is no cream puff and an amazing story. Their AD is Josh Morton who is a former UND football player. In a short period of time, he established key corporate relationships and obtained funding for a new hockey arena for a team that didn’t yet exist. He then convinced an assistant coach who had been the top recruiter for Motzko’s teams at St. Cloud and Minnesota to become their head coach. He came from Detroit Lakes where he was an outstanding RB and along with Reed Manke led an overachieving, undersized team, to a state championship in FB. He was an outstanding, albeit undersized defenseman in hockey. His Dad who played at Providence was his HS coach. Garret was as tough of a HS defenseman as I have watched. Because of his lack of size, he didn’t receive D-1 offers until after he played an extra yr of juniors when St. Cloud State signed him. By his Soph yr he was a team Captain and by the end of his career he was All-WCHA and an academic All-American. Post college he played professional hockey in Europe before joining Motzko’s staff at St. Cloud. He successfully recruited a number of “lunch pail” guys to come to Augie to start their program. They practiced together at rinks in town and lifted and conditioned at existing facilities on campus. Within just a couple of years he has put together a team that can hold their own against the top teams in college hockey. Raboin is arguably the hottest young new coach in college hockey. He is married to his HS girlfriend who is a UND grad. I would definitely have him on my list of who to consider as our next head coach the next time the position opens up (if another major program doesn’t get him first). I would also try to hire Josh Morton the next time the AD job opens up. It will be interesting to watch how Augie does this year.
  17. Typically the staff will be assigned recruiting areas. The position coaches are involved with recruits that play their position. The staff communicate with HS coaches to get their input regarding potential recruits. They view film and when able will watch games in person. They develop their “board” listing recruits at potential positions and as they evaluate kids they tend to rank them in order. The staff has input and often they may fight for kids they are convinced are guys who will play. Recruiting is a team effort by the entire staff. Usually OC,DC, and HC make the final decision on the recruits regardless of what position the kid plays or is projected to play. It’s a team effort.
  18. Lots of 5’ 11” guys at all levels are able to do that effectively but I get your point. We have had big athletic QB’s and if they have struggled early, especially when our oline can’t give them time, they get crucified on this board. Some of these guys need 2-3 years. It obviously helps to play behind a veteran, skilled QB, but I don’t think we have done a good job of developing our QB’s. Just my opinion.
  19. I don’t care if they are 5’11” or 6’2”. I care about whether they can read a defense, audible when necessary, get through their reads, have a quick release, get the ball to the receiver on their break or as they get into the seam against the zone, can escape the rush, and run the ball to effectively. If those guys are 6’ 2” or taller great, but 5’ 11” or 6’ is tall enough. It’s hard to see over linemen even when you are 6’ 3”. QB’s need to move and find the “throwing lanes”. I was surprised over the years when I stood next to NFL players including QB’s how many were 2-3 inches less than their listed height. Before the “squad” downvotes and points out the obvious, I agree the 6’3” 220lb QB who can do all of the things listed would be better, but most of them are at FBS schools. When we get them, we need to be able to develop them. I’m not so sure we have done a good job of developing them, and we as fans haven’t shown the patience that is required to get guys to the level where they can care a team and win games for us.
  20. That’s on the WR. Happens a lot in the NFL and often ignored. They also ignore the rule about being set instead of running in place but I digress.
  21. Agree defense is the major issue. Whether you run a 3-4 or a 4-3, the front 7 need to stop the run and pressure the QB. Our DB’s are improved especially at safety. It seems like we recruit 4-5 TE’s every year. A number of them are very good athletes. We just don’t use them. I’ve spent time with coaches at every level from HS on up. Virtually every one of them stated you need to get your TE’s into your passing game or else you are easier to defend. The UNI game turned into a must win. The team needs to regain momentum and confidence.
  22. I understand, but my point is that this is our staff and these are the players that played and coached Saturday. Chaves must accept responsibility for program success or lack there of. Saturday isn’t totally responsible for UND getting beat. That is primarily on the players and coaches.
  23. I see no point in kicking that dead horse now. That is why I said it should be addressed at the end of the season. Yes the AD has ultimate responsibility but my response was to the comment that it was entirely on Chaves. No one is going to fire any coach nor administrator in the middle of this FB season. I wouldn’t have approved a contract extension either, but winners find a way to win despite the obstacles. Successful teams/organizations don’t tolerate players/ employees who complain and always blame someone else. Chaves is accountable for coaching hires but it’s on those coaches and players to execute and be successful.
  24. We had Feeney, Kaminski and the freshman Sulik. We did, we don’t anymore. Fruechte needs to be reminded that TE’s are eligible receivers.
  25. Good question for our coaching staff. We had 3 here when we started fall camp. I thought they would start Feeney cuz he played well when given the chance. I thought he had earned an opportunity to start unless one of the other 2 were clearly ahead of him. I also don’t like them not getting our backups more playing time. Kaminski needs experience to develop. Feeney should have had more reps last year.
