I don't recall where I read it, but very few NCAA championships make money. I believe the only ones were basketball, baseball and hockey. Since FBS football championships are not run by the NCAA, it is not included. Note what is missing.... FCS football. Money loser. Sure there are some programs that make money, such as NDSU and Montana, but more lose money than make it.
Look at the schools in the current WCHA. Hockey is a cash cow for most of these schools.
I'm not saying FCS isn't relevant. I'm saying that it isn't as profitable as hockey.
