I am glad UND didn't wait. What went on behind closed doors in South Dakota may have left UND out in the cold. The MVFC was not even talking to either UND or USD until UND accepted the Big Sky invitation. There was likely some arm twisting to get the MVFC to accept one more Dakota school. I don't think they would have gone for two. UND has taken the path that I had hoped, the Big Sky. An added bonus is not having to listen to the bison fans about UND tagging along, riding coat tails, etc.

I stirred that pot a little and you're right there is no way that Sioux will be in the name. When young Mr. Davidson from Spirit Lake passed away last week and his grandmother is a huge Fighting Sioux supporter, I was thinking that Spirit Lake Sioux would be a nice tribute to those who supported the Fighting Sioux name. I'm not so sure that Spirit may not be part of the new nickname.

No worries. I didn't take it personally. Just pointing out that Al is in it for Al.

I don't believe he did this for UND to begin with. He did it as a power grab from the SBoHE. He was told by the GF representatives not to do it and most of them voted against it. I didn't herald him as a hero then and think less of him now that he is running away from a problem he created.

The soccer season begins tomorrow against USD..... UND to kick off 2011 season tomorrow hosting USD Hopefully the ladies will take it up where they were towards the end of last season before falling the championship game on penalty kicks. Go Sioux!!

It's a source of revenue to fund the athletic department. it doesn't operate on unicorn farts.

NDSU has had a very good track program for years, unlike UND which has not made track and field a priority. I think that is changing. UND hired a new coach, that turned the Northern Colorado program around. That hire was one of the indicators to me that UND was moving forward with the indoor practice facility.

I have it on good authority that UND will have a nickname, but it won't be for a year or two. The revenue to be gained by having a nickname to market is to big to ignore.

Spirit Lake youth who dreamed of playing Fighting Sioux hockey dies in vehicle accident Interesting that a young man named Spirit Play from Spirit Lake wanted to play for the Fighting Sioux. I know this has been posted before, but I wonder if it would be possible to use Spirit Lake Sioux as the nickname. I am sure that it would have to be approved all the way around the NCAA and conference circles. Pretty tough week for his Grandma, her grandson dying and the name she fought for losing the final battle.

I read on the KFGO where Kelley said that there will be new name in the near term. Apparently UND will go with "North Dakota". I would love to see "DAKOTA" on the front of the jerseys.

Over the years Iramurphy has always had some inside information on what is going on. I've learned to trust what he posts as being informed and thoughtful. Teeder11 fits that same mold. You may not always like or agree with what they are saying, but it is usually well thought out and dead on.

It likely won't outsell Fighting Sioux, but does no nickname sell, as well as the roll out of a new nickname? Sica has said it before, control what is yours to control. Get on board with choosing a new nickname or someone will choose it for you.
