    After Denver

My favorite comment from this morning (Monday) interview: the give and go was give and gone UND is a good team when they cycle the puck, however, cycling was almost impossible as the players were tied up most of the time. Also some good talk on Coach M. Eaves situation in Wisconsin -- regarding players on the roster and him bringing in talent -- this evolved because they were talking about UND getting it done with the current players on the roster. (they were) complimentary of Dubbie from UDenver. Tough weekend in respect that the 20 players who went to Denver all worked hard, it's just the production didn't result (credit Berkhol and Dubbie). How do you coach 'em now? They are working hard -- but they really need some of the upperclassmen to produce. Gave credit to the effort/results put out this season by all 3 seniors (JN, KS, CL). It'll be good to have DH back in the line up but his time will be limited as he lost a lot of strength. There was a lot of good talk, but I imagine most will be gone over again on Wed night -- so I'll leave it to the professionals (PCM and forecheck) to give a good recap.
  3. One of my favorite 6 yr olds calls him the same thing, however, he really believes that Speedwhack is his last name -- we can't get him to say Kevin "Spiewak" -- he thinks that because he is so fast they gave him the name "speed". And you all know, kids say it like it is......

    Sioux vs. Tech

Matt Greene only had one penalty last night -- the offsetting roughing minor at 19:17 of the 1st period. (my note: that was one of the "tamest" roughing calls I've seen) He had a nice game (a couple of icings on missed break out passes). Whatever the captains and/or coaches said to him regarding penalties must have really sunk in. Good Job!! It was really interesting listening to the color provided by Craig Perry last night -- he didn't comment too much on Josh's form -- but he really broke down what Cam E. (goalie for Tech) was doing wrong (pointed out his footing and the use of glove and areas he was particularily vulnerable to). Not to say that previous color guys haven't done that, it's just that knowing he's been working with Josh I probably listened better to him when he was talking about the goalie. (Is this the 3rd series he's done this year?)
  7. Depending on what happens as it is still really early -- Troy J. from MSU-Mankato would have my vote -- if they make it to the WCHA final 5 -- look at what they lost from last year Pateman (goalie) decided not to come back, also the choice of Tim Jackman, and there was another one (a senior declared ineligible -- someone help me with his name please) -- who would have thought they'd be where they are!

    Coach's Show

Tim and Swyg had Associate Coach David Hakstol (ACH) on this morning. There were a few glitches .... ACH didn't call at the exact appointed time (7:30am) so Tim and Swyg were filling time by commenting on various things like that ACH is deserving to be listed on the top 10 dressed coaches, they commented on the possible rift between clear channel and the hockey program (alluding to Ed vs. CB and now the possible Tim/Swyg vs. ACH) a caller on cell phone asked if they were going to start playing the Michigan Tech fight song ..... anyway after a few mintues ACH did call in and told Tim and Swyg they "need to get some hobbies". Swyg asked when the hockey team was going to play a game at the Hyslop so that the hockey crowd/fans could see what the Hyslop looks like (since the basketball fans saw a couple games at the Ralph they thought the favor should be returned). David Hale is in GF. He has lost a lot of weight (didn't have too much body fat prior to falling ill, so being only on liquids for days has taken its toll). It'll take time to get his legs back. 4 good practices this week to solidify the d lines: Chris L. & Lee M., Nick F. & Andy S., and the Matts. Greene, as a freshman, is doing everything and more now -- that extra year after high school spent at Green Bay really has helped him develop (good coaching at Green Bay) -- at CC Greene had a good 2 way game, he didn't "yap" - right now the "meat and potatoes" type game is what he's doing, but he has good hands for a big guy, and that'll develop more too. Back to the practices of this week M and T practice: almost totally quiet, the guys weren't too happy....W and tR practices were really good. TIM: talking to the older guys, they felt they got away from what they normally do -- ACH: the few know they didn't play wall - but there is character there Regarding Michigan Tech: can't take anything for granted, they have a different attitude thanks to Coach Mike S. - couple good players and have received very good goaltending from Cam E. -- like most teams that come to the Ralph they'll be pumped and ready to try to knock the Sioux down. Regarding UMN at CC: figures probably a split - CC is a really, really good hockey team, deserved to win and deserving of the #1 ranking -- we/UND want another shot at them (CC) TIM: cc defensive corp took over the game(s). ACH: I like their d-corp (of course, wouldn't trade ours) but their corp is good. Talk about CC's crowd: it's getting to be better there, louder more hostile, in past years could've be called sort of apathetic. Sounds like it's a sell out for the Tech game (student tickets are gone).
  9. Tim and Swyg had CR (Coach Roebuck) on Wednesday morning (in addition to Wed night's coaches show). Swyg was mentioning how strong the jack-bunnies are; CR agreed and added that UND's post players are strong too (Jenny B., Kara D., and Kristi B.), the difference is the perimeter players. The jack-bunny perimeter players might not be "stronger" but they are very agressive, not afraid to put the ball on the floor and go hard to the basket. Talked also on how much Marissa L. has matured as a player -- she's always had the ability, it was just whether she was going to decide that she is a star player. It looks like Becky M. was in just a little scoring/shooting slump -- when she was struggling it wasn't because her shooting form changed/was adjusted, the ball just wasn't dropping. Some joking about being ready for the "cowbell", as it sounds like there is a regular jack-rabbit fan who comes with his very loud, and persistent cowbell. During tonight's coaches show CR mentioned that during the game at SDS the jack-bunnies were really enjoying the dominating win over the Sioux, they (UND) needs to make sure they don't give the jack-bunnies that oppurtunity again.

    For the record...

Some comments made by Tim and Swyg this morning -- CB will probably/should take Mike Sertich by the Lakeview Inns & Suites (in GF) as that is the type of thing that makes Mike rant ..... they recounted a John Marks story -- on a trip out west the plane left at 12 and landed (2 hours later) at 12:02 -- one of the new young players (who had probably never been too far from home) was so impressed and amazed that they traveled on a rocket and they arrived at only 2 minutes (or so) after they left (12:00) caught the tail end of this tale: JP Parise playing days ..... they had a practice without pucks - up and down, back and forth - and while in the locker room after the practice Mr. JP commented that that was no way to practice as he was no longer a spring rooster ...... --- just tossing these out as today is going really slow ----- waiting for PCM and Forecheck's recap of the coaches' show (I think CB is the final guest tonight -- Roebuck is up first)
  12. PCM -- please feel free -- just be careful for the loopholes!
  13. Looking through my notes from the coaches show there was one comment made by the caller which was pretty darn funny - *almost hate to post it as it'll 99% likely become a new thread title regarding UND fans preoccupation with savior/God/all things holy -- so please don't disappoint me As the caller was getting ready to hang up he said - I'll be saying my prayers each and every night - (in regards to SC). You had to hear the whole conversation, but the caller had really good "timing", just typing it makes it sound a little lame .... for those of you unable to hear the coaches show live, it's too bad, 'cause they really are pretty funny (plus the callers are good -- good questions and the like).
  14. I didn't see this mentioned, and it probably doesn't qualify as "pure sioux hockey content" however, it's darn funny and has a "X-Files" kind of spin....... It seems that TH and spouse have a "strange" link to Sioux titles under Dean Blais --- in 1997 when the Sioux won it TH and Tamara had Casey, then in 2000 when the Sioux won it TH and Tamara had Colin...... well I believe they said that the Hennessey family was expanding yet again this year! What does that mean?!?!?! Good work! and congratulations too.

    The Hales

Great article on uscho -- http://www.uscho.com/news/2003/01/27_006011.php PCM -- nice piece (but then you had good material to work with too).
  16. CB was on with Tim and Swyg this morning .... only caught bits and pieces ..... There was a discussion on the Myron Allen (UND basketball) situation. It would have been good for the program and Myron had the NCAA ruled differently, however, they didn't so now the hope is that Myron stays in school. This led into the topic of the value of the education/degree that all the student-players receive at UND. Sooner or later the majority of players have to "give up the dream" and use their education to earn a living. CB talked about a couple of his guys who, after college, tried the professional ranks (sort of got it all out of their system) and now are in white collar jobs, making a living, and having no regrets. CB stated that that's why the students are here ... get a degree and have success on the playing field(s). General talk on the CC series. Swyg stated that this past weekend while in SD there were a lot of tv promos for UND hockey. This led to talk about SD kids and the youth hockey movement in SD. They have expanded quite a bit, and their traveling teams are coming along. Talk about the growth of "western" hockey (Bismarck players: Mike Peluso, Mitch Vig and James Masson to name a few). Talk about Brian Canady. These first two years for Brian have really been tough (injury bug)... but he is a worker. He's a character and he has character, they really need him at 100% 'cause he gives his all. He'll come around, it's just how long until he is healthy.

    Top 5 Rivals?

Wisconsin Minnesota St Cloud Duluth I concurr with lawkota regarding Wisconsin -- even though I was young(er) in the early 80's "they" were the first team I "hated"; and when I was old enough that was the first road trip I made. I've been known to give up the Minnesota tickets, but even when the Badgers haven't been too good I refuse to give up those tickets. Another aspect: when we went to Madison I thought we were going to be "killed" (we were sitting in the parents' section), it was BAD, then after the game one of the badger fans (who'd been very vocal at/to us) gave us coupons for free food. For me, that trip formed my opinion on how to be a WCHA fan: hostility during game time, after the buzzer sharing a beer, a sub and a laugh. I would imagine Boston College would have to be in there somewhere too. Next year we'll be meeting them during the regular season play.
  18. Andy talked with Tim and Swyg this morning. The captains run this weeks practice. Monday was an off day. Most of the guys slept the day thru (Monday was a holiday, so no classes at UND). The time change from the Alaska trip took its toll. Tim: You played well, particularily on Saturday. Andy: We did a lot of things better Saturday night; Friday night was a little bit of a fluke. For being short players UAA played hard. The goaltending was much better Saturday. You kinda gotta feel bad for them (UAA), one thing after another (talk about the sign falling) they've got to get some luck soon, win a couple games. Tim: You've won 21 games and they've not won in 21 games. He (Andy) saw Chris F. on Wed & Thurs -- he's known Chris since his junior year in high school. He, Chris, is one of the more talented players he's played with - wish him the best - he's had (he'll have) his chances, he just needs to make the most of 'em. The trip to Alaska was tough because last week was the first week of school, so, because of traveling on Wednesday, some of them missed the first day of a class, which is tough, cause usually you can see where the class will be heading (is it a keeper or should you look to drop and add something else). For the most part, the teachers/instructors are understanding. Tim: The d-men looked a lot more comfortable on the big ice at UAA than they did at UMN (talk about the quality of UMN vs. UAA having some bearing on what the d were able to do on the big ice). Andy: 5 on 5 isn't really the problem, it's the penalty kill. Against a highly skilled team/power play unit (UMN and CC like teams) they can really expose you on the big ice on a powerplay -- you have to stay positionally sound on the big ice. Tim: You and David (Hale) had some really, really BIG hits at UAA. Andy: You can't go out of your way to look for a big hit. Our d-corp can wear down the other teams forwards, because by and large the d- does hit big time -- but a lot of the credit goes to the forwards because they really wore down the d corp of UAA -- coming in waves. Regarding CC: biggest series of the year to date -- looking for a couple points. The teams goal is to be a top 3 seed, sure winning the league would be "great", however realistically the team is focused on being a top 3 -- the league (WCHA) has too many dangerous teams - a top three puts you at home with the 8, 9, or 10 seed, which while tough is a lot better than being a 4 or 5 because the 6 and 7 teams are just as tough probably as the 4 and 5 team. (talk about how tough it is for the 4th and 5th teams at the WCHA final 5 tourney - all teams want to avoid that play in game)
  19. (Since the Sioux are off this weekend) ..... Does anyone know if either of the Maverick games will be broadcast (on the dish network) this coming weekend?
  20. U2Bad1 --- I'd say don't worry about it .... the comment CAN be read two ways -- it is Sal's board and his to run (for the pleasure of Gopher fans) --- you know how you meant the comment and it sounds like most of "us" understand, and "we" still like you. Congrats to Roberg, as it is a feel good story, and it is too bad that the game was just an exhibition game. PCM and/or Sica here's a question for you as you've been on the USCHO board for awhlie .... isn't there a gopher fan who "hates" CC fan Randy May because he banned that gopher fan from his CC site because that fan (fan base) posted "anti" tiger stuff?
  21. CB and the team had left for Alaska prior to the coaches show. The coaches show was Swyg with Coaches Glas and Roebuck.
  22. Wasn't so much an "outting", more of a "I'm not worthy" to our local soothsayer.
  23. Just a tangent note to the whole series -- but I believe "congrats" go out to a board member who had the best guess regarding saves for the two game series --- the guess was 116 -- the correct answer was 115.
