He mentioned that in the league the standard seems to be 3 goalies on the squad. Having 4 goalies isn't "bad", it just is better for the goalies to rotate 3 during practice, more of a chance to face some action/pucks. Ranfranz graduates after this year (03-04), Brandt next year. Next year (04-05) would likely have 4 scholarship goalies for UND; however, the following year (05-06) would be the "optimal" 3 goalie set -- 2 juniors and a sophomore, and barring any changes (06-07) would be those same 3.

Matt Greene was on this afternoon (prior to practice) with Mike Mac. & Greg L. (the McLyte show Mondays on 1310). Only caught a little bit of the conversation. Bunch of joking back and forth for example: if MG wasn't to play hockey he'd maybe like to be a lumberjack or a rodeo star -- he was on a horse for the first time this summer. Question as to what type of season it'll be. Lots of players put in time on conditioning (weight lifting, track) -- players come to UND for one reason -- to win. After MG left there was talk about ironman -- they thought Matt Jones won, with Tyler Palmoscino a close second? MG had made a comment early in the interview, to which a couple callers called in about -- I missed the comment, so I won't try to relay what MG stated --- maybe someone out there was listening too and can give their thoughts on it. The discussion with one caller focused on sportsmanship -- fighting. Greg L. (prior to coming to UND to play football, did play hockey in his younger years in Canada) and he talked about that MG's rough treatment of players in front of the net is needed -- that's a d-man's job, stay this side of a penalty, but don't allow someone to set up camp. Then a debate about the place for fighting in hockey. All in all, pretty entertaining stuff. They mentioned that they might try to get MG on again on a Monday show.

There are solid arguments to be made for many coaches. I figure the reason Coach Sauer is at 16, was because there are many that could be named, he won the tie-breaker .......... the tie-breaker being that he has a regular column on insidecollegehockey.com ....... it wouldn't have been nice of InCH to leave him off the list .... If we were going to give out popularity points -- well, here's one for Mike Sertich ---- he was/is always a fun interview to listen to ....

An interesting debate could be on the best assembly of coach, associate coach(es) and assistant coaches -- 'cause as important as the head coach is, the assistant's are very important (for example: UND's 2001 runner-up finish -- CB was away for part of the season while his daughter was being treated, great job of stepping up by DH & BB). During title years there were 1987 head coach - Gino assistants and/or associate - CB, Cary Eades & John Marks 1982 hc - Gino a - CB, Don Boyd 2000 hc - CB a - Scott Sandelin, Lee Davidson, Jeff Bowen

RPI has: Krach has: CC #20 CC #8 MN #3 MN #2 UND #25 UND #16 MSU-M #17 MSU-M #10 St Cloud #2 St Cloud #5 DU #12 DU #13 UMD #29 UMD #19 WI #14 WI #15 UAA #19 UAA #20 MT #10 MT #17 Regardless of which system is used the WCHA as a whole had a good showing. I'm surprised at the 12 spot differential for CC (20 vs. 8). The other noteable SoS were 2 final four participants: Cornell #30/#26 and Michigan #27/#18.

We can only hope that's the case -- the 3 year contract with Crookston expires this year -- I haven't heard who the replacement(s) will be ....

I should have mentioned that Kiss was just in Fargo -- (as a point of reference: the Fleetwood Mac concert in GF had a crowd of 8100 in August this year -- most of my friends who saw them in Fargo (concert was in 1997) did not go to the GF because they had "already" seen them and Christie McVie wasn't touring with the band .....

David Hale's goal this past season at home vs. CC to tie the game .... Providence .... April 2000 ..... being there ..... empty net goal ..... oh my goodness ..... At home ..... April 2001 ..... Dean Blais was on with Mike Mc. this morning talking solely in regards to Coach Herb Brooks. (One thing I noticed was that a couple times Herb was referred to in the present tense -- it really is hard to grasp that this larger than life character has indeed passed away.) Interview started with a playing of the song "The Good Ole Hockey Game" and 3 audio clips of HB. DB: The game has changed over the 20+ years removed from the 1980 Olympics. In 1980 DeanB was coaching in Minot -- when the final score was announced there was a pause of roughly 5 minutes while the crowd went wild -- standing "O" and the like. After the Olympics HerbB came to Minot and talked to the hockey community and then gave a substantial check to the Minot hockey recreation club. DB: HerbB was a peer (ages 66 and 52 respectively). HerbB gave his friendship -- he had a great concern over the welfare of hockey ... DB took a whole lot from HerbB. He hated to lose -- if "we" lost it is "my/HerbB" fault, if "we" win credit goes to "you/players". More talk about HerbB's Miracle on Ice: DB: The miracle of hockey -- get everyone on the same page (which HerbB accomplished). Russia was playing for a job, USA was playing for the/a moment. In 1980 there were roughly 30,000 kids playing hockey ..... 2 to 3 years later there were 300,000 ...... (currently around 3 million). He enjoyed hockey and was willing to go any where at any time to help develop -- expose -- the game. (Talk about a trip to Topeka with Gino to pump up the area with the addition of the Topeka USHL team -- anything he could do to promote this game.) Final comment by Mike M: This is a huge loss to the WCHA family.

I'd be a lot happier if he'd be coming with his Wisconsin team to GF to play -- from the looks of the schedule the only way we'll see him in GF will be IF the teams meet in (with UND being the higher seed) the 1st round of the WCHA playoffs.
