Would he have had a 5 minute major somewhere?

Thanks for the link Scott - just looking through last year Andy S - 35 games 27/65 David H - 34 games 26/63 Brian C - 36 games 23/49 Bench - 37 games 3/6 opponents 37 games 253/541 UND 269/598 And since we'll be recognizing the achievements of Jim Archibald (1981-1985) career 247/540 (both UND records) also 84-85 Jim had 81 penalties that year which is the record, in 83-84 he had 78. Maybe Mr. Greene can get some tips from Mr. Archibald...... not that it looks like he needs too much advice
  3. Has anyone watched the Badgers on tv (642) this season? We've tried to watch a few games this season, but haven't caught too many . (And truth to tell, the new announcer they have for Wisc. is so "enthusiastic", I have a hard time watching/listening to the game - I swear the guy downs 2 cans of jolt before they go on air - but in his defense - he loves his badgers and, well, he's got energy...). Were the games against Duluth on this past weekend? How are their goalies playing? Usually, even if everything else is "suffering" their goal tending is solid. Is that the case this year too?
  4. The young man from NDSU senate is on the radio right now with Scott Hennan. They are bringing in the UND Bridges group to talk to the Student Senate (I believe) prior to the vote on the resolutions. As far as bringing in proponents of keeping the name/honoring the name the young man stated that they would welcome speakers with that viewpoint, however, as there is no "official" group in support of the name, it will be the obligation of the senators to educate themselves as to whether the Sioux name as used by UND is an honor prior to the vote. Scott let the young man state his whole case. The NDSU guy said that it doesn't matter if some think it is an honor and some don't - doesn't matter because if some are offended then it has to be changed. He also kept talking like the vote was a done deal, and Scott kept calling him on that so the young man (Paul, I think that was his name) would then restate it "if the vote goes through" ...... it seems pretty likely that the vote will go through...... Paul brought up that GF Central changed its name from Redskins NDSU is taking this step so they have a similar policy to UMD, UM, SCSU, USD, SDSU There were callers: One caller said that NDSU senate should concern themselves with 2 facts regarding sporting teams: the 44% graduation rate of NDSU student/atheletes and that the NDSU football player didn't place members on the all-academic team Another caller: a Central HS grad, stated while he still is not happy with the nickname at Central he understands that Redskin has a negative connotation Scott brought up PCM's Marc Ranfranz interview - Paul dismissed it saying that there isn't a consensus within the Sioux/Native community and it is offensive to some so it is wrong Earlier this morning with Tim and Swyg someone called in and asked if NDSU was ready to take on the "big" boys (ie Florida State, U of Illinois, and Utah, and the team from Calif that are the Aztecs) because going to Div. 1-AA they'll (NDSU) be able to broaden their policy to include those teams on the resolution - otherwise this whole resolution just comes across that it is anti-UND
  5. Tuesday morning (11/19/02) interview with Tim and Swyg and Coach Blais Good teams out there, Craig Dahl had mentioned to Coach Blais that Ferris State is a good team. CB mentioned that Princeton has had some tough losses/close games and that Yale is playing tough. This came up because they were talking about UND being ranked #3 in a poll. Who knows if UND is an elite team, CB doesn't know if the team is in the elite category as of yet; their record is 9-1, so record wise that is "elite" but as far as competition played..... Some talk about Niagara and Canisus (sp? sorry). The UAA goalie is the WCHA defensive player of the week. On Saturday night UND had 5-6 good chances - UND didn't "make" the goal tender look good, plain and simple, he was/is good. The team worked for a sweep (w/o BB and ZP scoring goals (that counted)). Jake Brandt had a good game on Saturday - he didn't try to do too much, just kept it simple. Wisc. will be a good test for the team. As good as this Wisc team may or may not be right now, after Christmas they will be a "better" team, simply because it takes a team some time to get used to a new "system", and Coach Eaves style (practice/play) is not the same system/style as Coach Sauer. Coach Sauer will be in town this weekend. According to Tim, Sauer likes coming to GF (probably because he won a national title here and the UND crowd got behind/supported Wisc. on their run, once the Sioux were eliminated) - also Sauer likes going to the Italian Moon. Jim Archibald - one of the most feared players - he was like an uncaged lion before a game - he was a pure body checker - JA and Dean Dachyshyn were the best at that - the hit on Tyler Pal. at SCSU was on par with the type of hits those two dished out game after game. JA had like 37 goals his senior year, he was not just a one dimensional player - physical and could score.

    Sioux/UAA series

Thanks forecheck --- I just assumed that it was JB and not MR as one of the three...... Did you hear who'd be in goal tonight for UND?
  7. #33 - from the uscho.com website under the score update section there is this site posted is posted by dagies: http://home.nycap.rr.com/mlewin/ Dagies mentions that you need real player, and when he downloaded it took about 20-30 minutes with a 56k modem. Sprig also posted another link (which I can't access so try going to the uscho page and clicking on that) http://www.uscho.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&...&threadid=17780 (look to Sprig's post and hopefully you can get in that way) good luck.
  8. In response to Jim Dahl's post about "ill will" Exactly ..... remember when voting for the Hobey two years ago, many Sioux fans flew off the handle when Coach Lucia didn't vote for Jeff Panzer ..... there was no ill will in Lucia's vote, he simply voted for the most deserving person for the award....... a Hobey vote shouldn't be made based on "league" loyalty. That was Lucia's choice, so he, I'm sure, won't begrudge Mr. Brooks weighing in with his opinion, as it is his opinion to give. Sorry Jim I was trying to quote you, but as I'm terrible with computer stuff I couldn't figure out the quote function.
  9. Here's a link to the Pioneer Press regarding Mr. Brooks' comments: http://www.twincities.com/mld/pioneerpress...ota/4533422.htm The best quote of the whole article: "As expected, the Gophers announced the official signings of four recruits to national letters of intent: forwards Ryan Potulny and Dan Irmen of Grand Forks, MINN..." Get a map - it's Grand Forks ND and East Grand Forks MN

    Sioux/UAA series

To belabor the point about the players sticking up for each other..... ZP and other players can take care of themselves (for example: ZP isn't afraid to get physical) but if an opponent does something cheap/dangerous, one of the "bigger" Sioux players is going to be in their face right away - it's pretty straight forward. I'm not a big one for fighting, but I was d@rn glad to see Greene go at it RIGHT away, and no one else on the Seawolves "went" after ZP after that. And any opponent stupid enough to go after someone when Andy S. is on the ice needs some sense beat into them, and he's just the one to do it. James Massen looked very strong last night - not to put pressure on the guy, but he looks like he's in the mold of a Lee Goren, stong on his skates, physical, nice speed and a good shot. Unlike last year UND players aren't getting "knocked" off the puck. The team looks tough and strong. ZP might not have had his best game on Friday/last night, but with under 5 minutes left in the 3rd period, with a decent lead, who was the UND player who went down and blocked a shot out at the point? It was ZP, he is such a gamer. Notermann - what can be said, can we just call him "Motormann" 'cause he is all over stirring the pot... UND does have good leadership from the seniors.... JN, KS and CL all looked good last night. I agree about the shots on net being questionable - prior to UAA's first goal, UAA had 2 shots on goal, after their 1st goal there were still on "2" shots on goal on the scoreboard..... maybe that was changed later. Regardless, the defense did limit the number of shots UAA and did a good job. 3 of the goalies were out during warm-ups.... I was late, but I think the 3 were Siembida (who played), Brandt and Sofie. For UAA their #82, Curtis Glencross a freshman, impressed me. Strong player, to me he seemed to play bigger than he actually is. The goaltender, Kevin Reiter, was good too, but his clearing attempt which resulted in Rory McMahon's goal was soooo ill-advised. Props to Rory for making a really good play - it's all about hustle. The best thing is that the team is winning the games it should win. It might not be a "pretty" win but after last year, ugly wins are way better then pretty and/or ugly losses.
  11. PCM - thanks for taking care of business - did you use all you had? (both "blue line" and "red line" ice) Maybe some extra could be sprinkled around the goals.......
  12. My .02 cents ...... I like the new intro on the board. The one from last year was awesome (highlighting the championships) however, a change is good (although as mentioned it'd be nice to play it for SCSU in a few weeks as they haven't seen it!) but last year it didn't seem to intimidate UAA or Mankato ....... it'd be nice if they'd edit the new one and put in, for example, BB's goal from this year (Niagara series or maybe it was Manitoba exhibition game, shooting at the zamboni end - what a blistering shot) that should intimidate ...... maybe they're just waiting for some of the home games to get some game footage from this year. During last years Maine/UND game there was a ceremony (for Coach Walsh), does anyone know if there will ceremony of some type performed this year? Was Eric Eno in charge of that? (not for Coach Walsh, but just like a general blessing) RK - I still have the ice in the cooler - next time you're up remind me to give it to you - hopefully you won't have to use it to bless/annoint the new REA
  13. Actually doesn't he use those 3 things when determining who'll be in goal?
  14. Tim and Swyg interviewed Coach Blais this morning.... and will talk to him tonight on the coaches show. Generally pleased with the split from the weekend. St Cloud is a tough arena. The crowd is loud, large and rabid. Good to get the team into WCHA play. With the exception of Yale (4000+ fans and loud) the away games were played in an atmosphere of "neutral" ice (including the game at Princeton), and nothing compares to playing in front of a rowdy/hostile WCHA crowd. (Tim commented that St Cloud does do a good job with their player introductions/pre-game and such.) The conversation was fun, because they'll be interviewing him tonight, so they just touched on a bunch of topics and probably will be more in depth tonight. Swyg said he was looking for a big, "large" goalie - they joked that he should be tall too, to fill up the net. He thought maybe Casey Blue had some eligibility left..... A little talk about line combinations (ie Spiewak on the BP line) Coach Blais gave away the secrets to coming up with line combinations: 1) he puts all the names in a hat and then pulls them out and 2) sometimes he wakes up in the middle of the night with new line combos A bit on UAA - no more Cygan and Zap on the UAA squad.
  15. Wednesday nights at 6:30 on 1440am - generally speaking, Dale Lennon, the FB coach, is on 1st and then Coach Blais next..... football will finish this coming weekend, so I'm assuming that a week from this Wednesday will be Coach Lennon's last appearance for this year..... with basketball starting Coach Roebuck and Coach Glas will be on the "rotation"...... as far as I know, this show is not available on the internet......
  16. The only possible reason I can come up with (on why they don't have an "instruction" video during the period breaks) is that there are a number of advertisments which they have to show during the period break, so to keep the audience involved they interject live/on ice stuff with Katie, otherwise the whole period break would be spent watching the jumbo screen. Back to Sica's comment about Katie's Brian Canady interview: Brian did carry 90% (or more of the interview), but Katie also talked "normally", more of a conversational flow and her voice didn't go to that higher pitch that it hits quite often. During that interview you could focus on Brian (which is the point of an interview) rather than thinking to yourself "simmer dahwn nahw" with the pitch, please... All I know is that I wouldn't want to do it - so kudos to her for having the guts to go out there......some of the stuff they've had her do, yikes, no way would I want to subject myself to it.
  17. Wish I could take credit but...... watching the Badgers on 642 you'll see their new coach Mike Eaves doing some of this stuff -- good p.r. stuff as, even though Coach Eaves is a former Badger, a lot of the new Wis fans may not remember him too well, so it's an easy format to "introduce" the new coach to the fan base while giving the (casual) fan some pointers ....
  18. Thanks forecheck - I hate to miss "hearing" the coaches show, so really appreciate your shorthand/notes. This morning on the radio Tim and Swyg were discussing how players position their hands (right handed folkes vs. left handed folkes)..... they commented that, generally speaking, Canadians position their hands in a manner in which "less informed" spectators would assume they are left handed, when in fact they probably are right handed or vice versa..... something to that effect...... Anyways, that started me thinking..........seeing as there are many "new, casual" fans at the REA, I was wondering why they don't have Katie do something like "Fine Points of the Game" and have some players/or coaches (taped) demonstrate different "things". (I don't mean to imply that this would be better than what she currently does pre-game/during the game - it'd just be something different....... some of those "skits" don't seem to go over too well with the crowd) plus........... fans "know" the players as in regards to how they play, but I have a greater appreciation, say for Brian Canady since his interview that Katie did a couple weeks ago, not only is he a good/tough/tenacious player, but he has pretty good wit..... who knows ,that may be a lot to ask since the team already has school work, practice, travel and games to focus on, and so doing "spots" might be just one thing too much, but you'd think with some of the alums of the program in the area (T. Howard, G. Paranica, C. Perry, J. Panzer, heck maybe Katie's dad T. O'Keefe would do it - that'd be a nice family touch) maybe one or more could be coaxed into volunteering to instruct the fans...... excuse my ramblings.....
  19. In Friday's paper there is a column on Brian Canady and his return to play. http://www.grandforks.com/mld/grandforks/s...rts/4417818.htm BC has been given a clean bill of health. Further down in the article there are blurbs on "Quick Start" "McMahon's Benching" "Jury is Out" "Building its Case" and "Opening Games" (Lot's of hockey tidbits in Friday's paper: under Kevin Fee's column quite a bit of stuff, in addition to Virg Foss's "Shooting down the shot clock?" column.)
  20. In Thursday's GF Herald Sports section there was an article on QF (I can't get in to get a link to it - maybe someone out there can put it in here) Anyway. Assit. Coach DH is quoted saying "Brandon and Zach have put up big numbers, but I think Quinn has been a big part of that. He's been a big piece of the puzzle." ZP on QF: "....but he grinds, and he gets the pucks out of the corner. He gives (us) good chances in front of the net." The article then talks about QF spending last year in the USHL. Coach DH stated "I think it was a really mature move on Quinn's part to go back to the USHL." "He not only got better as a player, but he became a leader, too, and that's showed up in our locker room." (He put on 10#s and has much more confidence.) QF: "I think that extra year helped me out." "It also made me realize how good it is here. I'm here now with a team of guys who really want to win." Coach Blais: "There's a world of difference. He (QF) started doubting himself his freshman year, and he was frustrated. Going back to the USHL gave him a world of confidence." QF trails only BB in the number of shots on goal (QF has 19, BB has 21) Coach Blais: "He's getting 3 or 4 chances a game." "Sooner or later, they'll start to go in. I wouldn't be surprised if he's the next one on our team to get a hat trick."

    Radio Talk Week 2

10/29/02 morning interview on 1440 by TH & SS of Coach Blais: Niagara impressive, particularily after the Friday night loss, they/Niagara came out hard on Saturday and worked just as much as the night before. Niagara picked to finish 4th in their league, if they play like they did this weekend they'll probably challenge for the top in their league. Wayne State is in that league and they just beat someone in the top 15 this past weekend. Some talk about the goalies (I put that in another thread) it is Josh S. starting the first game. Mentioned that a few years ago the team would give up 30-40 shots a game. The lower shot totals faced this year attributed to the size and mobility of the defense and the work the forwards put in on back checking and covering their assignments. Chemistry. There are 15 forwards that can play - it is a battle for playing time. TH/SS asked what's made the difference in Quinn F. of this year as opposed to the Quinn F. of two years ago: Confidence. CB and QF talked and decided he needed more games. When he came back this year he was physically and, more importantly, mentally prepared. Talk about how QF does the little things - watch him work in the corners and in neutral ice, he's contributing. Figure it won't be too long before QF has a hat trick to match his linemates. Comments on practice being fun and just a good overall feeling around this team.

    ND out east

From CB's comments this morning JS gets the start because he played decent in relief of JB on Saturday. Jake B received the Saturday night start against Niagara because CB wanted to give Jake a chance to redeem himself. When the score was 4-2 (UND lead) there was no reason to question Jake being in goal, however, when Niagara scored the 3rd goal, UND had been pressuring in the Niagara zone and it was a little disturbing to give up the 3rd goal. CB said at that point there were really only 2 options: a timeout or a change in goal. He said that the goaltending change made the most sense as the team/UND was working hard at the point, but a goal to tie it up by Niagara wouldn't be good. He went with the gut feeling of changing goalies. There probably will be a rotation with the goalies, but, who knows, if one can step it up that's who'll probably get the majority of the playing time. Someone has to step forward and take the job....

Oh my ---- bad, bad typing it is Josh S. starting on Friday....

    ND out east

This morning Coach Blais stated that JB will be starting in net (for the 1st game) and that Brian Canady should be back in the line-up. **** I misstated above - typing this morning before having a soda, not good, it is Josh starting.....
