    World

Yesterday afternoon there was a (radio) discussion regarding this topic. It was either the guy proposing it or else it was someone from the "Gateway" Commission -- (the commission which works on improving hwy 2/Gateway Drive: they're the ones who spurred the movement about putting up the walls along hwy 2 between the airport and the city limits) It was a fun discussion -- this guy was pretty enthusiastic about this big hockey player/goalie -- especially the green glowing eyes at night. The radio host was a little (a lot) more reserved. (Talk then turned back how more improvement is needed on the drive from the airport to the city on hwy 2.)
  4. Ah, you can tell I'm old. Not only were my reading skills bad (blaming a UND student, when it's actually a magician) but when my significant other wants to show off for me it's: "you can pick the channel tonight" -- even drunk I doubt he'd try to do something as "spectacular" as a banister slide to impress me! Thank goodness the kid is okay.
  5. I wonder too if the (perceived or not) treatment of the students would have been better had not a student** fell at the hall of fame game. Although that was just one student's actions it probably gave the REA officials the idea that the students could/would get out of control; and they (REA) would prefer to err on the side of being too strict. ** now, maybe it wasn't a student, but from my recollection it was a student, right? or maybe it was an urban myth, spread by the REA officials as justification for their treatment of the students?

Actually from my super-secret inside pipeline source to the powers that be at siouxsports.com, Hammy was NOT the top choice for the most offensive (gopher) poster on the siouxsports.com board. Not that the siouxsports.com powers-that-be didn't put in a call to Hammy, but only AFTER they'd already signed up better talented party line-spewing flackees (is that a word?), I digress... Not saying that Hammy doesn't have TALENT at spinning and stirring the pot, but he just isn't in the same league as our very own Pucker the master of equal opportunity offensiveness. And had Pucker been unavailable, and they needed to go outside normal recruiting grounds for a posser er... poster next on the siouxsports.com hit list respectively were: Drop The Puck (who was noticeably absent this past season) and "the flavor of the month name" aka newman/eaglebunny/ Cathy's something or other/I'm forgetting 12 other names .... Again I'm not taking anything away from Hammy's abilities, it's just that, well, they're not what siouxsports.com deemed recruitable. Actually, what I was trying to say is "Leave Hammy ALONE. He's doing the best he can."
  7. standard mail -- with delivery guarantee 48 hours prior to event -- I figure it is delivery roughly 2,808 hours prior to event -- so we should be o.k. I was shocked with how fast they arrived. (There was no charge for standard mail --- just an order processing charge of $3.10, a total convenience charge of $20.00, total building facility charge of $4.00 and then the price of the tickets.)
  8. FWIW: if you did the pre-sale your tickets should arrive soon -- just received mine in today's mail. Diggler -- we are right behind you! We'll try to maintain the proper hockey decorum....

    Early prediction

I'd think that UMN will maintain their excellent run of success, but there will be some really strong teams in the WCHA. I think both UND and UMD will continue to build on last year's success and take some more steps forward. Looking at last year's finish I'd hazard a guess that MSU-M doesn't finish second (tied for) in the league -- their players gained valuable experience participating in the regionals and Jutting seems to always have his team ready to play -- but Stevenson's loss will be felt. Stevenson alone was not the reason for their success, but he was a significant link in the chain -- plus, MSU-M had the advantage of surprise -- who but the Mav fans thought they'd accomplish what they did -- this year everyone will be ready (or at least should be) for them. For me the biggest dissappointment was CC. Nothing against the gophers, because if the Sioux don't take it all I'd like it to be a WCHA team -- but I was really hoping that CC would be the "other" WCHA school to win the title last year. They really seemed to be the cream of the crop last year, so the fizzle at the end of the season makes me wonder what their morale will be like this year. Without Senja they still are really solid, maybe the ending to last year will be a big motivator for them. DU seems to be a pattern team -- one year they "peak", the next year they "valley" -- I expect them to have a better finish than last year -- top 5 -- for no other reason than it'd be a "peak" year in the cycle. No clue about St Cloud. It'll be interesting to see how to Wisconsin responds to 1) the second year under the Eaves' regime and 2) life without Alex Levitt -- he isn't coming back is he? where will he be next year? Michigan Tech -- new coach -- new system? same results as Wisconsin last year? UAA -- is the curse over? There is no way that last year is repeated, but can they make up any ground on any of the other 9 teams? In no particular order: Home ice for playoffs: UMN, UMD, Denver, UND Away for playoffs: UAA, MT, StC, UW Toss up: CC and MSU-M teams 3-8 probably pretty tight in the standings ..... but what do I know ... Last year (pre-season) I had Denver and CC as 1 & 2 and Mankato #10 -- I sucked, so maybe I should pick UND #10 and the gophers #1 to use reverse logic/wishful thinking!?!?!?!

    Early prediction

If we are making predictions -- I'll admit that my prediction today was 1 post and 2.5 hours off -- Petey, you won this bet!! You can collect at the first home game!
  11. When I went on line for tickets the ends seemed to be pretty open (row A and up) -- we took lower bowl corner seats and best available gave us row D -- that was mid-afternoon today. ** And thanks Fedorov for the reminder -- I totally forgot they went on pre-sale.
  12. 1st -- to the administration -- sorry about putting this question into this forum, but I didn't want to put it in a specific section as then the "birds" may begin to "chirp" wondering "who it is" (meaning if I put it in the football/basketball forum Bison chatter or in the hockey forum Gopher chatter as to who is taking summer classes). Question: When a scholarship student/athlete takes a summer course is that student responsible for the cost of the summer course(s)? That/those classes are not covered under their scholarship, right? This was a topic of a conversation and it was assumed this was the case, however, we wanted verification or a correction by a resident expert.... Sica, Jim Dahl, someone, Bueller?
  13. CB was on the radio with Mike @ KNOX this morning. Re: Hockey Camps -- if your child(ren) doesn't have an application in by now probably unable to get in -- you can try by calling Cheryl Gilbertson at the hockey office 777-3103 -- hockey camp is a great time, but it is a big responsibility -- 24 hour supervision -- days run 8am to 9/10 pm -- every Sunday the staff has a big meeting to run through the upcoming week. Joking back and forth about CB being the son of a Marine ... CB said his brother is the scary one in the family, very intimidating (was a Marine in VietNam 69/70..) -- for those unfamiliar, Mike is a Marine so he brings up the Marine connection quite a bit. Caller: What is the goalie situation? Still in the air - Nate Z. is here now -- Phil L. is back at Central finishing up school and will be back in the USHL next year. Caller: What about Brady Murray? Going to world junior camp for Canada (he has dual citizenship US/Canada) -- won't go into expectations -- puts too much pressure on kids in addition to NCAA regulations dictate what information can be released regarding recruits. Mike: I'm not a fan of NCAA -- conversation turned to the Myron Allen situation for a little bit. E-mail question: Any "Travis Roche's" next year? 6'4" Smaby will be a physical presence and Robbie Bina is in the hallway. Mike: Bina is pound for pound the toughest football player he'd ever seen -- hits like a ton of bricks -- played d-back ..... CB: we have skilled d-men that'll have another year under the belt. In our league a Keith Ballard is the model of that type of player. Playoffs: obviously, tonight is a must win for the wild -- the ducks goalie has been too good for the wild to come back from a 0-3 series (barring a total melt-down from Gig...) The wild would be helped if they could pick up one more superstar to compliment Marion G., either an offensive or a defensive star -- a Pronger type on d would help a lot. Hoping that MN surges back tonight -- the inability to score on the ducks goalie gets to be an emothional/mental burden -- the goalie is seeing everything right now -- they'll have to try to get a constant presence in front of him -- they need to get nasty -- regarding tonight's game -- could see MN outshooting ducks 12-6 in the first, they'll come out hard, but remember ducks have played 5 fewer games, plus MN has used a lot of emotion to dig themselves out of 2 series -- emotion can take you a long, long way, however, it is very wearing, and as mentioned the goalie is in the zone and 5 less games in the playoffs is a big advantage for the ducks. NJ and Ott. -- what a battle. Right now, would probably go with NJ taking the cup -- but they play the game for a reason, so we'll see. E-mail: what about Curtis Murphy? One of the best but the size is a constant battle -- he's like a 5'8" d-man -- Roche is a 6'1" -- look at Vancouver, very physical d-men, large -- Travis should get a good look at the NHL next year ***** this is not a verbatim transcript -- I took license with is typed above -- no direct quotes -- I don't mean to put words in anyone's mouth -- take it for what it's worth.....
  14. and sometimes the best team doesn't win either.... just ask Michigan..... regardless, congrats to Jeff Panzer!!!
  15. Because that's where MY seats are! Card-carrying member of the "nimby" crowd, that'd be me. Also you (meaning the students) would be too close to Katie's "office" and you probably wouldn't be able to control yourselves around her.

    Frozen Four

I'm with Greyeagle on this one -- the western team should win. Truthfully, with the shelling UNH took last year in the final 4, I really expected them to come out stronger today (basically the same team and same coach) -- but Cornell had them on their heels ..... that disallowed goal, I think, was huge -- it woke up UNH. But even then UNH took stupid penalty after stupid penalty. There is no way Minn/Mich comes out that flat in a final 4 game. (please don't prove me wrong at 5 pm today) I'll give UNH that they played without Lanny Gare, which is significant loss. But if they give up that number of pp chances to Mich/Minn they will lose. Plus look at the number of faceoffs they lost in the 3rd period today .... if they go into a defensive shell against Minn/Mich they'll be in trouble.

    Frozen Four

Won't get into the dirty stuff .......... but Cornell did their fair share of "bumping" the goalie -- also didn't the announcers mention a "face wash" too? .... Cornell did have to fight through a lot of crap, however, they were awarded pp chances .... they needed to convert on a few more.

    Frozen Four

20 second mark huge save by Ayers! game done!!! UNH -- congrats!!!! 3-2 More: replay show Baby shot the puck off of Ayers head
  19. kr

    Frozen Four

penalty done -- Cornell goalie out - 49.9 seconds remaining --
  20. kr

    Frozen Four

just over 3 minutes left and Cornell takes a penalty --
  21. kr

    Frozen Four

4:30 left in the 3rd still 3-2 UNH quick E2 stat: faceoffs: UNH 23 Cornell 37 so, that'd be a 10-2 advantage for Cornell in the 3rd period in faceoffs won ......
  22. kr

    Frozen Four

Cornell scores to close it to 2-3 at the 10 minute mark of the 3rd. One of the Abbott twins.
  23. kr

    Frozen Four

3rd period under way -- at 16:36 left in the 3rd Tyler Scott (a junior) takes a penalty for UNH -- retaliation penalty -- shoved the Cornell guy into the bench -- still 3-1 UNH
  24. kr

    Frozen Four

End of 2 3-1 UNH ahead. Stats courtesy of ESPN2: sog: UNH 14 Cornell 18 powerplay: UNH 1/3 Cornell 1/5 faceoffs: UNH 21 Cornell 27 hits: UNH 10 Cornell 14 scoring chances: both with 9
