If UND becomes the Roughriders. Maybe there will be a movement to change Red Rivers name...to Cavalry. They could even keep the same logos.

Will someone start a nickname vs no nickname thread? This is getting tiresome to those of us that actually want to discuss UNDs NEW NICKNAME!

Au contraire. Native Americans were the original Roughriders. In fact, there's a Roughrider statue right outside the front of the Ralph. A Roughrider is a skilled rider of little-trained horses, especially one who breaks horses for riding. That's where TR and his men got the name from.

Fighting Green Fighting Hawks Green Hawks Thunder Hawks Too generic. Absolutely no sense of pride. Doesnt unify the fans. Doesn't evok a fierce competitor (which was one of the Fighting Sioux's great selling point).

Sundogs - the group at UND that wanted to get rid of the Fighting Sioux logo proposed this name.

Force - name of local hockey team in Fargo Pride - a certain group of individuals already claims this name. Spirit(s) - type of alcohol.

They're "lifting it" from the state nickname. Good luck finding any decent name that hasn't been taken, especially if you are going to include high schools.

Staying just "North Dakota" would actually give us the nickname "Green." "Go Green" would start to be the cheers.

I'm guessing mainly a star is bright and iirc made up of gases similar to the sun (I just remembered the sun is a star). Sure you can have green stars and sun's. Red Hawks Green Hawks Black Hawks Blue stars Black stars Purple stars Any things possible.

Same thing I said before. If you dont like Roughriders as a state nickname. I suggest you write your congressman and have it removed from the list of nicknames (among the states website). If you don't care fine. We know its not the official. You only get one of those. Every state has an official name. And about five other nicknames.

They ran out of eagle names so they switched to hawks.
