Sioux-cia
On the 10 o'clock news last night, while waiting to see Trupp's fantastic goall, I heard that Spirit Lake was going to have the people on the rez voice their opinion about the FS name and logo. It there was a strong opinion to keep it, it would go to a vote. I think they said that it was the chair woman who said this but I wasn't paying attention when they first started talking. The news report also said that Standing Rock was standing firm on their opposition to the name and logo. So in reality, if the name and logo are ok with Spirit Lalke and Standing Rock isn't, we still don't get to keep the name and logo. Which brings up the question that a Dakota Sioux asked me. Why isn't UND talking to the folks on the Sisseton-Wahpeton-Oyate Reservation? Part of it is in North Dakota. They have come out against the name and logo but talking to them won't hurt anything. A nurse and lab tech at their health care facility are planning to bring their respective families to the Ralph. They're hockey fans. Did FSU and Cent. Mich get all their tribes support??

The deal made with the NCAA was that we need the support of TWO tribes to keep the name and logo. Beats me why the State agreed to two!?! Beats me why the State agreed to two!?! I'm guessing; but I'd say that if you only got one of the two, then the other tribe would come back and say "isn't OUR opinion just as important?" putting you right back in the same situation that you have right now. That, and of course the NCAA bent over backward to make this as favorable to the disadvantaged minority as possible. I'll re-raise a point I made a while back: how about if you change your name to "University of North Dakota Spirit Lake Sioux" and keep the logo?? That I don't know: I'm sure someone else who lives closer can help out with that one. But here's one thought off the top of my head-does this third tribe have a reservation that is entirely within North Dakota, or does their tribal land straddle a state border? The Sisseton-Wahpeton reservation straddles the ND-SD line in far SE ND, but the vast majority is in SD, as well as its headquarters. The Standing Rock reservation has more land in SD, but is headquartered in ND.

I just spoke with a friend who is close to the situation in Spirit Lake and he said if the vote goes through like he hears Spirit Lake will give it's appoval. Imagine the possiblities with advertising Spirit Lakes Casino. With this situation I can see a casino in Grand Forks possibly by the Ralph. I would be all for it all as long as we get to keep the name.

There are a few that don't want the name and logo. Myra Pearson is probably the most known, since she is the tribal chairperson. However, there are many more that favor it. Sioux-cia
The sad part of this situation is unless the Standing Rock Tribal Council does the same thing, nothing will come of it. The settlement agreement with NCAA clearly states that TWO tribes have to give their approval for the continued use of the Fighting Sioux name and logo by the University of North Dakota. I think we may be pleasantly surprised by the outcome. According to the news report that I saw, Standing Rock tribal council would not be taking the issue to the people. They stand firm in their opposition to the name and logo. Once the tribal council is voted into office, there is no opposing the tribal council on the rez! petey23
I have heard from people with ties to the standing rock reservation that the vote would not be that close with only about 20-25% against the name. I think if the people on the spirit lake reservation vote in favor of retaining the name that pressure could be put on the standing rock reservation to do the same and let the people that they alledgedly represent decide. Remember we have 3 years so not a big rush. If Spirit lake votes against it, then it is time to pull the plug.
Sioux-cia
I worked with a lot of Dakotah Sioux on the Sisseton Wahpeton Reservation who favor the name and logo. Their tribal council opposes the use of the name and logo. I'm no expert but I think the only way that Standing Rock or, for that matter, Sisseton gives the people the say so via a vote is if there is a new, democratic tribal council voted into office. Sioux-cia
I think we can be take our time with this. Ron His Horse is Thunder was elected in 2005 for either three or four years. The language of their constitution is confusing. It states elections are held on odd numbered years. First it states that council men hold office for four years; right after that states that in the 1984 election it was decided that councilmen would only hold office for three years. Since Ron was elected in 2005, I'm not sure when his term is up; this year or next.
Chewey
It looks as if DYB is at it again. The number of natives attending UND is down by about 2 or 3 students and she claims that the nickname is responsible for it. She refers to the usual suspects -- Dana Williams and Leigh Janotte -- and their conclusions, and her own conclusions, as "proof." Any study by sociologist Dana Williams is going to be totally objective and forthright, I can tell you that. By the way, why haven't I seen PCM and ScottM posting here during the last couple of weeks? Did they die? Were they kidnapped and wisked away by the PC activists? GeauxSioux
Spirit Lake may vote on UND NicknamePearson could not say when a vote might be held on the Spirit Lake reservation. She said that if Tribal Council members gain enough feedback during upcoming district meetings, the wishes of the majority might be clear enough for the council itself to decide. ''Maybe it won't even have to go to a vote,'' she said.

The Tribal Council does not have to listen to any member or members if it does not want to. And just remember that there is no Democracy when it comes to Tribal Politics.
