The Gophers will be a good team. Even though they lost three top blueliners and their goalie, remember they also return all of their fowards along with two very good incoming freshmen. I would give the Gophers the advantage at scoring depth, but us with the advantage in goal and at defense.

Don't let anyone kid you losing Briggs was a gift to the Goofers. The kid never won what I would consider a big game when it mattered most.

They might be better without him. That being said their defense is going to be their weakness followed by goaltending.

I'm not going to ramble off about the Gophers to much but their defense isn't going to be weak, just young. Remember that we made it to a frozen four with four freshmen d-men. They have the talent on defense, it's just a matter of youth and inexperience. Although Briggs wasn't a great goalie, Frazee has been inconsistent and Kangas is a freshmen. I'd still take an experienced senior goaltender, especially with a young group of d-men.

Holy mother of pearl I actually agree with what Goon says. Do you believe in miracles YYYEEEESSSSS

Anyway, Briggs solid during the regular season but brutal in post-season. He folds faster than a tuesday newspaper. Frazee seemed like he matured a little last year and turned the corner. I actually had more confidence in Long Island Frazee than Briggs.

Defensemen will be an issue. Awfully young back there. tDon is bringing in some beef with Bickel and Shack but I don't think they are mobile enough. Shack struggled mightily at times last season.

Either way, they still will be a solid team. Might have some growing pains Oct - Dec. but they will be in the hunt.

Two years ago the Sioux won the Broadmoor and made it to the Frozen Four with four freshmen defensemen playing each night. The gophers this year will only have two frehmen d-men playing regularly, Fairchild and Wehrs. Bickel is also a freshmen but out of the eight d-men on the roster he is clearly the eighth right now and won't see much ice time, especially in the second half. There are still question marks of course but players like Fischer and Peltier need to step it up like Vannelli did last year. If that happens the D should be solid. Not great but solid.

As far as goaltending goes I expect Frazee to have the best season a gopher goalie has had in a long time. He was rather cocky and immature as a frosh but he's matured a lot on and off the ice and it sounds like he's in the best shape of his career. He was great in the playoffs last year and he's ready to be the go to guy.

The Sioux and Gophers will both be great next year and we better enjoy it because both teams will lose a LOT of talent when it's over.

Why do some fans get so upset about other teams being talked about? Especially in a thread like this that is about all teams and their loses. Sioux fans brought up the discussion of how the Gophers will do next year and what their weaknesses will be. Why get your shorts in a knot when a Gopher fan expands upon this? You can't talk about Goligoski and the effect his departure will have on the Gophers and then get all huffy puffy when a Gopher fan talks about the Gophers.

It's the "fan", not the material. BS is a well known troll around here.

Which is all the more reason why a respectable post shouldn't be ragged on. If he doesn't feel the need to be so defensive, maybe he could contribute more in a constructive manner like his last post.

BS didn't first arrive here in defensive mode, but rather trolled. If he wants to continue to make constructive posts, eventually he won't be ragged on. Until then, he'll be thought of as the same old BS. I only read him when he's quoted, since he's otherwise ignored.

my fault - I guess I did not have to read what Buckywhatever wrote let alone respond as that made me look like I give a damn what he thinks

If he's not going to be given the chance to be constructive, just blindly ridiculed regardless of what he posts, then what is going to motivate him to actually be constructive?

Right now, there's nothing motivating bucky to do anything more than troll. Think about it.

Back on topic:

I agree with Goon. Losing Briggs will not be a big loss. Losing Goligoski will be a bigger loss, but even that I'd argue won't be all that bad for the Gophers. Why? Because they have a TON of defensemen just like Goli, like Peltier and Fairchild, and so on.

What will hurt them isn't even the inexperience, as it was noted, there's potentially going to only be two freshmen on D next year.

What will hurt them is that they don't really have a shut down physical defensive specialist on the blue line that can be consistent AND effective. Fischer could develop into it, but he was spotty. Schack was scary bad at times but has the size for it.

What it is going to amount to is controlling the Gopher passing game and keeping them out of our zone as much as possible. If we do that, we should be able to beat the Gophers. They are going to be explosive offensively, but we will be nearly as explosive offensively and much more physical and and a sold defensive structure in front of our net.

The Gophers are going to be scary fast. Their big forwards in Stoa, Fisher, and perhaps WHeeler will make things interesting in front of our net.

However, the Gophers like to do a lot of long passing and finesse moves to try to produce pretty goals. If we can contain that, they wll lose.

One last thing: Keep the Gophers off the powerplay. But then again, playing smarter has never hurt any team against any opponent.

Agreed that Briggs wasn't the greatest. He was lucky to have good teams in front of him that allowed few shots. If you ever look at some of the games they had last year the gophers controlled the play and almost doubled in the shots total

Frazee will have a good season, but his numbers won't reflect how good he plays. He's bound to give up goals with the defense that will be in front of him. How he plays will determine if the Gophers win or lose on many nights, as there is the potential for some shootouts. :silly:

Agreed on your last statement there.

Peltier doesn't have near the offensive ability of Goligoski (and probably not the defensive ability either).

And expecting a freshman in Fairchild to "replace" Goligoski is a stretch as well.

The blueline for the Gophers will be young, but they are talented as well, so I expect them to be fine after Xmas.
