That being said, wouldn't mind seeing the Warroad, EGF, Hermantown, Cathedral Orono and some of those types move up to AA.  Have some balls like Roseau...unless rumors are true they're considering a move down.

In the early 1990s they went from one class to a tiered system.  The regular season played out and then they ranked teams into a Tier 1 and Tier 2.  Lake of the Woods made the Tier 2 state championship (1993 I think).  That lasted for a couple years before it was split into Class A and AA.  So 30ish years.

I grew up in a Section 8 town that has zero chance to even make the section semifinals in section 8.  I've never in my life heard one person from that community or any hockey people from the area talk about the need for a 3rd class of hockey.

I think two classes is about right for Minnesota.

so who started "talking" 30 years ago about the need for 2 classes?

If you have to water down ND HS hockey to 2 classes just so RR and GFC can still play each other 4 times as usual with the last meeting for the AA championship what are you accomplishing??

Kind of a chicken before the egg scenario. Do Langdon, WC, NW, and Crosby need to create hockey as high school sports to make the 2 classes a feasible option, or do the 2 classes need to happen first and the teams would switch over then? It seems to make sense, and would definitely grow the sport in the state, but I'm worried doing it with only 20 teams might be a stretch, and also wondering how hard it is for those smaller schools to start hockey as school sports? 

Or do we just need Minot North and Horace to start 2 classes? And how many teams can ND junior gold lose before the league folds and GF, Minot and Fargo lose overflow teams for hockey kids.

I mean it benefits the ND kids for sure. Look at EGF's schedule. They played Detroit Lakes, TRF and Warroad from section 8 during the regular season and thats it. It would help out Moorhead/Bemidji/St. Cloud from having to go to the cities for better competition during the regular season. Would've been fun to see what a kid like Mattern could do against Moorhead.

I think it benefits everyone. Mayville/GPR can schedule Kittson County/Crookston. GFC/GFRR can schedule Moorhead/Bemidji.

You give the 2nd tier teams a chance to play other teams at their level.  It will probably help grow their programs as kids are more likely to go out for hockey if they are not getting their a$$ kicked all the time.

I want to say it was the 96 RR team that beat Warroad, who went on to win state over Red Wing (Johnny Pohl), they made hats that said "ND and MN State Champs"

Well that's a great question.  It wasn't us kids getting our asses handed to us by Roseau and Warroad I know that from experience.
