My understanding of the six-team medal round is that the two group winners receive byes, and have only to win two games to win the gold. The second and third place teams in each group play a cross-group play-in game for the right to be in the final four. That makes the upcoming Russia-US game crucial. Current standings in the US group are:

US 6

Russia 5

Everyone else 2 or worse

If the US at least ties this game, they will win the group and earn the crucial bye. A Russian win will win the group for them. That would put the US in an ugly position: needing to win a play-in game for the right to play a rested and very good Canadian team.

After cruising through the first couple of games, I think it was good for the US to face a little adversity against Sweden.

ZPar takes back the tourney point lead with 2 assists.

ZPar 4-4-8

Stewart, Canada 4-3-7

jk, you are correct

The Russia game - tomorrow morning at 8AM.

I wonder if that game is on TV tomorrow on NHL Center Ice?

Would seem possible that Canadian TV would pick up that game, but, probably not, since Canada plays the Czechs at the same time. That's probably what you'll get on Center Ice.

NOt in pool play. If it happens it will happen in the medal round, which starts Jan. 2. If the US and Canada finish first in their pools, they wouldn't meet unless they both make it to the gold medal game (or the bronze medal game if both lose in the semi's).

The medal round brackets will be set tomorrow following the US/Russia, Canada/Czech, Finland/Switzerland, Sweden/Slovakia games.

The Rangers web site has a good page on results, standings and game schedule.

The Canadian TV shedule shows the Quarterfinal #1 game televized, which would match A2 against B3 on Jan 2 (if the US loses to Russia, they would be A2).

The US could also meet Canada in a semifinal game if one of them finishes second in their pool.

PP over... a few good chances for Russia. USA now getting their chances. Hereing ZP and DS names being called quite a bit.

Good shift by ZP, Murray, Werner...

Giveaway in the US zone requires a big save by Montoya.

14:20 to go in the first. US giving special attention to Ovechkin for Russia.

Suter goes down to block a shot to prevent a Russian goal on a wide open net.

Russia going on PP at 10:49 in the first... too many men on the ice for USA. Stupid.

Great play by ZP! He was 1 on 2 and drew the penalty!

Annoucner cant say enough about this play by ZP... he was taken down when he was 1 on 2, got back up and stole the puck from behind and got a shot on goal and drew the slashing penalty.

It said in the Pioneer Press this morning that these games for Canada and U.S. today are very important that if we don't win or tie we may not advance to the medal round.  Is this correct or did they just not explain everything to it's fullest?

If the US loses, they play a crossover (quarterfinal) game to make the medal round. THe loser of this game (or Russia if a tie) finishes #2 in the A pool and plays #3 from the B pool in a quarterfinal game.

I believe the US is still in even if they lose... they just wouldn't get the bye.
