Fighting Sioux name and logo

Sioux Guy in St. Paul

Recommended Posts

I went to a D-III hockey game here in St. Paul last night as my nephew plays for U of W Stout.

Before attending, I stopped in a local tavern to have a beer. I was of course wearing my Sioux home Jersey that I purchased last year.

To make a long story short, an American Indian - I still refer to them that way as they wish to be instead of the P.C. Native American - came up to me and excitedly complimented my jersey and asked where he could buy one. He was truely impressed by the logo as he stated that it reflected upon his race as a proud and noble one.

This is just a note of a personal experience from real people in the real world that we live in.

Thanks for your comments. A majority of Native Americans (specifically Sioux) actually enjoy the logo and feel it honors them, however there are a few (mainly caucasian) who feel that it is disrespectful. I only know one Native American who doesn't believe the Sioux logo/name is appropriate and I know 5 who think it is.

I have a couple of very good friends who grew up on the White Earth Reservation here in Minnesota. I asked them how they felt about this issue, and if they're offended by Indian logos on sports teams, particularly about the Sioux logo. They both said not at all, that the only people they knew who are offended are those who use the matter for political purposes.

Hey, I'm part Irish on my mother's side, and part Danish on my father's. Should I be offended by the Fighting Irish and the Vikings?

I'd be offended by the Vikings front office all the way down to Mike Tice

What fool would give Culpepper a contract like that?  And then there's Draft day...

I wish I could defend them...but I wouldn't have given Culpepper that much either. Don't hate on Tice...he's actually not that bad of a coach.

Who do you cheer for...The Fudge Packers?

I was wearing a black Sioux hockey sweatshirt, no logo, through the Mpls skyways yesterday. I passed by a variety of people of different races, etc., about the only people who gave me a "dirty look" of any sort were white Wellstone-lovers who I would probably offend by eating meat, farting, drinking beer, screwing their daughters and scratching my ass. Oh well.

I even walked by a number of people with Minnesota garb and the only reaction was a joking, "We're going to kick your butts in January." Yeah right, pal. We have a lease on Mariucci. :silly::ohmy:

A little off topic, but I think it would be great if some of you "have sign, will travel" folks show up in Minneapolis in January with a sign that says, "Welcome to East Grand Forks!"

Being I'm also an alum at East Side, I love the idea.  I believe that EGF is undefeated @ merrypukey.

BUZZZZ! Wrong answer, tell 'em why Wink!

UND has split the last two seasons at Mecca...Saturday loss two years ago...2-1 and another Saturday loss last year 6-3...as for years befor that in the last ten, I know UND has not swept the Gophers there every year, I'd even say that you have a losing record there.....

As for bringing signs into Mecca...big NO-NO...security WILL take them AND you run the risk of being escorted out of the building.

Watch what you say. Wellstone was a college hockey fan, and there's more than a few of us on here who ARE "Wellstone-lovers." I wear Sioux stuff all of the time and I've NEVER gotten a dirty look, comment, etc., except from protesters outside Mariucci, the NHC, and the DECC. Probably the same 10 people at each place.

I'd bet any dirty looks you received were based more on your "farting" and "scratching your ass" in the Mpls. skyway than a college hockey sweatshirt. :silly: Don't flatter yourself if you think your UND sweatshirt makes any kind of an anti-PC statement or bothers certain people. The vast majority couldn't care less about the hockey team you support.

You actually claim to be a "Wellstone lover"

This comment, however, is hilarious. When the Sioux and the Gophers face off in January, mark my words: The Gophers will be in eighth place in the WCHA, ahead only of Tech and AA, and unranked; UND will be sitting comfortably in first with a top-three poll ranking; and UM WILL lose BOTH games.

I can't wait to go to the final five tournament here in Saint Paul and pass by the scores of Gopher fans trying to sell their tickets up and down W. 7th St. because Duluth eliminated them in the first round at the DECC.

There are guys in my office who still talk about the possibility of a three-peat.... as though it's of foremost concern: "yeah, if we're going to three-peat, Donnie will have to right the ship pretty soon."

No, bozos. Donnie will have to right the ship pretty soon if you're going to avoid an 8th place finish and a fast exit in round one.

He didn't say UND was undefeated at Mariucci, he said EGF was.

there's a WEST Grand Forks?!?!? :silly: Opps misread that as UND...my bad...

to agree w/ ScottM on Wellstone...he lied badly when I was in college...he lied to the college students of the state and families of said students.

I know it's hard for everyone to resist, but I do love that this Board is mostly politics-free. We are united (not you, you WPOS) in our following of Sioux hockey; let's leave it at that.

yah, you guys be smart, don't let politics take over like it did for a while on POI. I will restrict my political thoughts even more here than I do on POI, which means that was my only political comment on your board.
