sioux fan in phoenix
Well, it's hard to believe that Sioux hockey starts tomorrow. I thought both Sioux & Bulldog fans could discuss the upcoming game here & also use it to post updates once it starts. Kinda makes me nervous to start Ziegelmann in goal, maybe it's just pre-game jitters. I respect Blais' rationale for this: to set an example... CoteauRinkRat
All eyes will be on the goaltending and the line of Parise, Murray, and Bochenski.
The Sicatoka
I didn't hear Ziegelmann. I just heard Hakstol on with Tim and Swyg say "one of the young guys" and "not Jake" in reference to the starting goalie against Duluth. He didn't specifically say Ziggy. Are you sure he's the guy? UMDDogz
Well this is it! Time to get down to business! The Dogs signed some good looking recriuts this off-season out of the BCHL and USHL. It will be interesting to see how they respond. T.J. Caig came from the same BCHL team as this years new recruit Bryon McGregor. Dogs are returning 21 or 25 letterman from last year, so they have experience on their side. Hopefully the D can weather the storm in the first period because I'm sure the Sioux will come out flying!! Good luck to both teams! Let's get this season rolling!! beersong
Should be a good game. I expect an offensive shootout, and obviously the Sioux have the upper hand on goal scorers. It's always interesting going into the first game - it's like that damn box of chocolates. If tUMD can survive the first period I think they'll be ok. Luckily for the UND crowd, tUMD Penalty Box will not be attending this game. They decided the 5 hour trek from Duluth was too much for one game, and decided to wait for the regular season series. I will be there to represent, so if you see a guy in a Penalty Box shirt, say "Hi" or "Bulldogs Suck."
redwing77
My prediction: UND -3 UMD- 2 UND SOG- 52 UMD SOG- 22 I haven't heard Ziegelman, but since everyone is saying his name, I'll assume that he's starting. Ziegelman 40:00 15 sog 13 saves Parise 20:00 8 sog 8 saves Reichmuth 60:00 52 sog 49 saves Goals: Parise (Murray, Bochenski) Murray (Bochenski, Schneider) Caig 2 (what the hell, give him a good game ) Lundbohm (Stafford, Massen) Heh. I wonder if I'll even be close.
FIRE HELMET GUY #26
I'm just glad that college hockey is starting up again, even if the Gophers aren't playing tonight at least this will be a good game to watch, or listen too for me I guess. This won't make a lot of Sioux fans happy but this is what I think: UMD- 5 UND- 2 (I think Reichsmuth(sp) is gonna stand on his head even if it is the first game of the year). Good luck to both teams and here's to another great year of college hockey!
airmail
Redwing77: The only thing you left out were penalties and time of goals...
Superman0099
Should be a good game. I'm excited to watch the young goalies, and to see Porter, Stafford, Murray. I think Porter and Stafford are highly underrated and should be a great suprise to everyone. Offensive depth will not be a problem this year, and I think we have some solid netminders. I think UND's team will prove to be too talented for Duluth. UND - 5 goals by Stafford, Porter, Schneider, Murray, and Parise 44 shots on goal UMD - 2 goals by Stapelton, Caig 24 shots on goal
redwing77
airmail, Lundbohm's goal will come with less than 3 minutes in the third period. Caig's second goal will happen within the first 3 minutes of the third period. Parise's goal will be the first and only goal of the first period. All the rest of the goals will be in the second. Penalties for UND: Greene (2 minutes tripping/hooking/holding whatever, surely it will be a bs call), Smaby (2 minutes cross checking), Prpich (2 minutes high sticking) Penalties for UMD: I don't know UMD's roster well enough to predict, but there will be quite a few... but don't worry, the refs won't catch you guys holding Parise behind the play. They didn't last year. They won't this year either. Shots on the Powerplay: UND- 5 UMD- 5 Short handed Shots: UND-1 UMD- 1 I'm going to say that Caig's first goal will come on a Greene penalty. MinnesotaNorthStar
Since we are predicting box scores... 1st: Shots UND 17-8 Bockenski (Parise, Jones) 3:47 Parise (Murray, Schneider) 6:19 Caig (Stapleton, Petruic) 15:34 Lundbohm (Massen) 17:18 2nd: Shots UND 29-17 Stapleton (Caig) 6:40 3rd: Shots UND 41-26 Prpich (Lundbohm, Greene) 10:19 Penalties: 1st: Caig (slashing) 5:28 Greene (roughing) 13:58 2nd: Jones (hooking) 9:36 Petruic (tripping) 13:56 Caig (high-sticking) 17:52 3rd: UMD (too many men) 9:57 Parise (hooking) 19:13 If I even get one right...... UMDDogz
Here's my prediction: UND will come out flying, but Reichmuth will stifle them during the first 10minutes of the first period. The Sioux will have at least 13 shots in the 1st but fail to score. 0-0 after 1 period. Second period Sioux will start to feel the pressure from fans at the Ralph and start pressing. Dogs will score on a quick counterattack early in the period. 1-0 Dogs. Sioux will REALLY start pressing causing the Dogs to take a penalty. Sioux will score on the PP to tie the game 1-1. Period 2 ends. After that it will come down to will power and defensive end play. Whoever takes care of the puck in their own end will come out ahead. I don't expect it to be an offensive game, as both teams will spend some time getting a feel for eachother. If the Sioux do happen to score early in the game, I don't like the chances for UMD. It will be difficult tocome back from that. But if we can weather the initial flurry, we should have a great chance to come out on top. If I had to give a score, I'd say UMD 3, UND 2. PCM
Here are my predictions for the game:Near the end of the national anthem, nearly every UND fan in the building will yell "home of the SIOUX!!!"Except for one spotlight, it will be very dark during Sioux player introductions.Between the first and second periods, the blimps will fly around just to annoy the students. Diggler will be overcome with joy when he wins a gift certificate good for one small carmel-pecan cappacino at Valley Dairy.Between the second and third periods, there will be a laser light show.At some point during the third period, the Sicatoka will wake up everyone around him.Approximately 75 percent of those in attendance will say or think: "A polar bear...?"Sioux fans will go nuts every time Scott Hennen says: "Here's your University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux SCOOOOORRRRRRING!!!"My predictions will prove to be the most accurate of any made in this thread. redwing77
Bah, PCM. Predicting the Obvious isn't any fun. And who says a student will win the gift certificates anyways? They want the public to come more than the students, so it would be more expected to have some of the public win all the prizes. As for the other predictions: You forgot to predict how many times the beer song will be played and what the students will do every time we score a goal. Slacker. Anyone know if we have Katie O'Keefe back this year? If not, do we have to endure another one of those little "ditties"?

flatspin7
Some of these predictions are the funniest things I have ever heard!. My prediction for the game is that there will be ice in the arena and the hot dogs will be slightly over priced. That being said---UND 39 UMD -1--- That being said every sioux player scores at least twice and the scoring got so bad they just starting going negative from Duluth. NorthDakotaHockey
Can't wait. Here is a stupid question. This game count in the overall record, or is it simply an exhibition game? Obviously, it is not a League standings game, but will it factor overall? We are on the road in the am and will be in our seats in time to yell at some new putz WCHA referee to "DROP THE PUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!" You gotta admit, the WCHA refs make the best game in the world even all the more entertaining.

Will be interesting to see if they enforce obstruction-holding penalties this year or if they'll swallow their whistles & allow us to watch rugby on ice again. PCM
It was interesting to hear Blais talk about the issue of obstruction at media day. He commented that the officials talk about where they're going to call obstruction. In other words, it's not a matter of calling it whenever it happens, but only calling it in certain situations. That means the obstruction rules are being enforced inconsistently, which I'm sure comes as no surprise to most Sioux fans.

If it's a penalty, blow the whistle & send the guy to the freakin' sinbin. How difficult is that? This, imo, is a black & white issue & there should be no, "Well, he did mug the guy, but his team is down by 5 goals so I won't call a penalty" type of thinking. Naysayers say this would slow the game down drastically, but I think players would eventually get the message if enforced consistently.
