World Junior Tourney

Gotta hand it to the Canadians. Number 3 for the Russians is going to have nightmares forever.

Russia had 3 opportunites to put the game on ice:

1. A Russian forward got the puck in his own zone with about a minute or so to go in the game and had room to skate, but shot the puck down the ice towards the empty Canadian net and it went wide for an icing. If he skates with the puck and gets to the red line the game is over.

2. With about 15 or 20 seconds to go, the Russians were battling on the boards at about the top of the circles and couldn't get the puck out of the zone...get it out and the game's over.

3. With about 7 seconds the Russian in front of the net goes down to his knees to block the puck and it takes a bad bounce off of him right to the Canadian forward for the game tying goal. If he gets in front of that puck and moves it to the corner...game over.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda.

I really wouldn't have minded seeing Canada lose. Their fans are getting to be too much, and they already have 4 golds in a row, they don't need 5. :D

Go Sweden!!

If Canada takes that many stupid penalties against the Swedes you will get your wish. The Russians made them pay on almost every PP and were it not for the heroics of Eberle the outcome of this game would have been different. The Russian D did a great job of keeping Tavares away from their net.

How stupid can Russian hockey players be? Someone already pointed out their three obvious mistakes at the end of the game, so I don't have to.....I mean who taught those guys to protect a lead? But I guess these are the same people who pulled Tretiak in a serious situation so I don't know why they'd play fundamental hockey in their own end to finish the game. :D

The Canadians will win the gold on Monday, but they should consider themselves extremely lucky the Russians were so stupid at the end. Heck, they didn't even use their best player in the shootout...

The Canadian Junior team found a way to win. That is all that matters in a tournament like this. If they bring the same effort that they had against the U.S. and towards the end of the game against Russia, they will dominate the Swedes. The matchup to watch for is between the top two NHL prospects.

The Canadian fans have been unreal too by the way. 21,000 strong with a ton of passion for junior hockey is what this sport is all about.

I love the Canadian fans' passion, it is awesome to see, BUT, the hatred for the USA has really left a sour taste in my mouth. I have to root for the Swedes.

I don't care a lot one way or another in the Canada/Sweden game, but I'll never root for the Russians vs. anyone. Let Canada keep winning them. Maybe someday we will model our program after theirs vs. the Euro model.

I am unimpressed with the Canadians cheering for any team playing the USA. I hope Canada loses the game tomorrow. I would rather see the Swedes win than the Canadians. Sorry but I have become bored with the Canadian fans. George Bush and Dick Cheney aren't playing for Team USA.

Too bad too...maybe Cheney would take a puck to the head. :D

Canadian's feelings towards the US run much deeper than Bush and Cheney. But these two yo yo's couldn't be two better examples of what has created a lot of Canada's resentment towards the US when it comes to hockey. The fact that people think that they are entitled to something without actually having to work or prepare for it is really disgusting to most Canadians.

Canadian society, more so than the US (at least lately), seems to believe in merit and doing all the things necessary to make good things happen. That includes learning to play hockey in both ends of the ice and working together as a unit with different roles and responsibilities. That sometimes means that egos have to be checked at the dressing room door for the good of the team.

You can say all you want about Canadian fans and Canadian hockey in general, but you have to admit the combination has at least been very consistent at producing winners when it matters. The same can't be said of the US. Unless you consider the fact that they have been consistent losers. Just check out the latest from the Under 17's Championships where a US team beat a team 11-0 in an exhibition game just a week ago and then lost in the semi-finals to that same team 6-5. The problem seems to be systemic. Its not just some isolated incidents here and there.

It's time for people in the US to start figuring out why that is.

It sounds like the whole holier-than-thou argument UND fans pull on the Gophers fans. I have to live with sucky US hockey and you have to live with cheering for the Russians.

I'm still pulling for Canada tomorrow night.

It's time for people in the US to start figuring out why that is.

1) Part of the issue to might be the fact that a very, very small percentage of the US actually cares about hockey (I wish it was more). The entire country of Canada cares about hockey. The best athletes in Canada almost automatically play hockey. The same can't be said for the US. Criticizing the US hockey program is the same as the US criticizing Canada for their football or basketball program. Yeah those programs aren't any good in Canada, but it is because by and large the majority of the people don't care about them.

2) Regarding your statement about Americans sense of entitlement being disgusting to many Canadians. Last I checked, the US was not the country that felt "entitled" to a socialistic national health care program. Most Americans have to prove their "merit" and go out and get a job that provides such benefits.

3) If Canada is so great, why are most of the NHL teams in the US?

BringDeanBack is right if anyone thinks they are entitled it is the Canadian fans and their media. I remember a few years back 2004 when the USA had won the WJC you would have thought Canada had suffered and utter disaster because they didn't win the WJC. I don't think USA fans feel entitled to anything. A lot of us are used to be disappointed in the WJC.

Also, it is fashionable these days to say, "Everyone hates the US because of their sense of entitlement". This applies to "friendly" countries like Canada and also not so friendly countries in the middle east. However, these people just love to hate and bash the US because of envy. They can never sight specific examples, they are just followers who pile onto the US just for the sake of piling on. I'll stop there since it is a hockey forum. But the despicable behavior by the Canadian fans during the tourney brought this issue to light.

I agree with you. I find it funny because if the USA is such a bad play. Why are there so many people trying to sneak in or trying to apply for visas and citizenship? Of course the Messiah Obama is going to right the ship. Not a chance there will still be all of these people piling on the USA.

I'm anxious to see the GWG. Whoever it is that does the blog for the U.S. games says it was one of those between the legs plays. Nice way to go out for VanRiemsdyk (wonder if I was close to spelling it right....).

As an egotistical American I thought that we were entitled to at least a bronze medal at this tournament, so I'm upset that they're leaving with consolation honors... :D

The new administration ran on that exact notion that those who work will now have more responsibility to divide their money among those who won't. You could not be any furthur off base here. They may not like the current administration but it would be for exactly the opposite of what you stated.

I agree with your sentiment as far as hockey goes here. Didn't Woug prove that you can't load a team with all prima donnas and win tough games?

Unfortunately I think we are a ways off from that happening.

JVR is a huge WJC disappointment for me. His getting decked and nobody retalliating against Tavares turned the entire tourney around for both teams.

And thanks to USA Hockey to pick Buffalo for the '09 WJC instead of trying to put it in a town that would get some support for the US kids. They are going to be facing hostile crowds in their own country. Ridiculous.

If you fight in the WJC I think you get kicked out of the game and the next one don't you? I don't know if would say that JVR was a disappointment he did score like 5 goals.

He had a nice tourney, I can't deny it. I just couldn't help feeling they were cooked when he was sitting there on the bench with his ice pack. You don't have to fight, you just have to do some really cheap **** to their players. Not the sissy slashes and pushing our guys were doing.
