2016 IIHF U 18 World Championships Open Thread
NoiseInsideMyHead replied to MDtoGF's topic in Non-collegiate sports
Not sure that's going to be a sentiment shared by many. Take away the scouts, the schoolchildren, and the players' parents, and you have more naked leather than a bovine Pride parade. A real black eye for the region. -

I am calling out GF, Fargo, and beyond: get to the Ralph and support this event. Please. The overall quality of life here depends, in part, on drawing cool stuff, and drawing cool stuff IN THE FUTURE depends on whether people go to stuff NOW. Empty seats are ugly. For all of our fun and mocking at the expense of the B1G joke, the Ralph is now at risk of being the saddest show on TV. Prove to the WORLD that this is a hockey town, and not just a UND men's hockey town. -
Rather than a standard backlit, static sign (like is on the HPC and elsewhere), I think a dynamic, virtual flame logo/LED, similar but smaller in scale to what is on the Target HQ in downtown Minneapolis, would be cool.

If you plotted the distribution of nicknames, say, forty years ago versus today, the gravitation toward birds and specifically "Hawks" simply must defy all logic, science, intuition, and explanation. It's the baddest of bad cliches. So predictable that it is perhaps unprecedented in the history of humankind. Paging Dr. Pavlov...

NDUS Budget Cuts (changed name to be system-wide)
NoiseInsideMyHead replied to Cratter's topic in Community
That's a real solid analysis of a complex problem you've got there. -

Ever driven by Bringewatt Park? If interest tracks participation as youths age, soccer may someday enjoy more players and fans than football. A healthy and competitive D1 program is an asset.

Random thoughts about baseball: 1. Do you think that UND does the classy thing and gives every player on the roster a 'senior day' sendoff at the end of the year, with the framed jersey, etc.? Maybe some special fan/alumni events around the last few games at Kraft? 2. This week's news is especially disappointing because I, for one, was seriously interested to see what the inaugural Fighting Hawks hat/jersey combo looked like.

128 sounds awfully generous. If that's how UND does math, the budget situation makes a lot more sense.

I don't think attendance was a factor in the decision.

2015-2016 College Hockey (non UND Hockey)

I know there are lots of variables, but wouldn't the addition of a basement dweller pretty much assure that NCHC goes from a four-bid league to three? -
Have they awarded this year's Pulitzers yet? God, I hope not.

So crazy it just might work.

Yeah, Trev Alberts would have at least waited until they won the national championship.

The timing of this comment is utterly fascinating…UNDMHockey earlier tweeted a link to an article at CSNPhilly.com in which Ron Hextall trumpeted Hakstol's treatment of players as a primary reason for his hire. http://www.csnphilly.com/hockey-philadelphia-flyers/ron-hextall-dave-hakstol-nhl-transition-quicker-expected-university-north-dakota-stanley-cup-playoffs

Thinking this is a smart move for Athletics, who is going to come out clean on this one. Get the dirty work done first, ahead of the rest of campus, and in a few weeks when all kinds of budgetary heck breaks loose, their role as the axe-wielding villain will have been forgotten.

Sucks, to say the least. Looking back, those sunny May afternoons at Kraft Field spent shivering under a blanket didn't often make the best memories, although I may always be the hero to my son for when I snared the foul ball, saving him from certain death. The persistent "gentle breeze" from the north would often carry lazy balls into the trailer park, while chilling you to the bone. To the couple dozen die-hards who were there for every game, my sympathies. You earned my respect and symbolized the heart of Sioux Baseball. It really was Grand Forks' best ticket that money didn't - or couldn't - buy.

Agree completely re: consumer goods. The big difference is that team uni's come with a built-in excuse -- cost and delay -- that can be used to mask dissent and displeasure in certain quarters.

Notwithstanding all of the inevitable hype when the logo is announced, THIS will be the ultimate barometer of how UND really feels about SME's work. If it's a home run, expect it sooner rather than later. Anything less, you might be right. I wonder…would it be a Title IX violation to put a crappy logo on the women's jerseys before the men's?
-
Saw that...figured it was just removed from its temporary home for IIHF and will be placed on ice until fall when it finds a permanent home (conference rafter is already full, right?). Besides, it needed to make room for two newbies up on the showcase beam.

I am somewhat neutral on banners, but here are some observations: 1. I don't think the Blackhawks would have too much of a problem approving a single, static display hanging on the inside of more public areas of REA. Not like it's going to be sold anywhere, and in context, I can't imagine any legitimate concerns from a legal standpoint. In fact, it may -- for future generations much more familiar with Chicago than the Sioux -- be a conversation starter about the history of the name/logo at UND. 2. I also don't think that the NCAA would put up much of a fight if there was going to be a change -- not merely an addition -- in how the historic logos are represented. In fact, it could be the product of a little informal horse-trading that advances both parties' agendas. The bottom line is that the REA will most likely never be 100% "sterile," and even the NCAA is capable of doing the right thing from time-to-time. 3. I want to believe that UND will not retroactively apply "ND." Exhibit A - the Alerus Center. From an aesthetic point of view, those banners lack more than a little something. The bland interior doesn't help, but can you picture that in the much warmer environment of the REA? 4. Using the Fighting Hawks logo retroactively would be both bold and balls-y…probably depends a lot on how the image is received this summer.
