  1. Actually, I think the comment was made during coverage of the Haiti earthquake.
  2. If you keep talking like that, Sid Hartman will make you one of his "close personal friends"!
  3. Ed Schultz should not have said what he said. This isn't Iran or Saddam's Iraq, where elections are rigged for one person or one party. His "warmonger" comment about John McCain in 2008 was also out of line; McCain has always been cautious about using military force in foreign places. And during the 2004 election cycle, MoveOn.org put together an ad comparing George W. Bush to Hitler; again outrageous and uncalled for. But this shouldn't surprise anyone who has followed the media during the information age. Last week, Rush Limbaugh suggested that the relief response by the Obama Administration was motivated by a thirst for political power and influence. Never mind that the United States has been involved in humanitarian relief for years under both Republican and Democratic governments (the Somali relief effort started under Bush 41 and continued under Clinton). Or what Pat Robertson said about Haiti making a deal with the Devil to get rid of the French, which is why the earthquake happened. Robertson's influence has waned considerably from what it was in the mid 1990's, so his only option is to be more outrageous and controversial. It's all about ratings, ad rates and (most important of all to the hosts of these talk shows) attention. People tend to tune into media outlets that echo and reinforce their own personal political biases and preferences (Fox News on the Right, MSNBC on the Left). CNN tries to be all things to all people and it isn't working like it did when they started back in 1980. Most media outlets are owned by big corporate conglomerates, which means whatever brings in the big ratings and subsequent ad revenues will remain on the air and in the best time slots for listeners/viewers. Outrageous and controversial content sells; "real" news does not. When they held Walter Cronkite's funeral, they should have had a funeral for journalistic objectivity at the same time. Schultz will get a lot of ratings and attention for what he said, which is why he said it in the first place. The former makes the network happy the latter makes Schultz happy. It's the same reason Fox News brought Sarah Palin on board as a commentator. Palin is very polarizing; either you love her or hate her. Those that love her will tune in every chance they get to listen to her. Those that hate her will also tune in just to hear what she has to say, even if it's like fingernails on a chalkboard to them. It's a win-win, no-brainer to the network and to Palin (especially if she is seeking the 2012 GOP Nomination). In retrospect, Bobby Knight (whom I am not a big fan of) was ahead of his time. All those chair-throwing antics were cold and calculated actions to either get his team motivated or to get the media attention that his ego demands or both. This was very effective in a time before the Internet, YouTube and Cable/Satellite TV became a prominent force in our lives. Now these tactics are even more effective and influential, which is why tactics like those used by Schultz, Robertson and Limbaugh will continue being used. It's sad commentary on our media and society, but it's also the truth.
  4. I agree 100%. The problem right now is that all the teams are crammed into just five conferences (not counting the soon-to-be dead CHA). I have always opposed 10 to 12 team conferences because they get too big and watered down. Another strong league to replace the CHA (which was always weak except for Bemidji State) that would provide an alternative home for some of these programs and help existing conferences streamline themselves (think WCHA and CCHA) would alleviate the problem. The question is how would it happen? And which programs would benefit from leaving their current conference home? Tough problem, even tougher solutions. As for the scheduling arrangement discussed in the article, it's probably as fair of a system that you can hope for in a 12 team league.
  5. Link to Story on GF Herald Web Site I really hope this kid learns from this and gets his life back on the right path.
  6. Canada leads Slovakia 3-0 late in the 1st period. Sweden defeats Russia 4-1
  7. FINAL SCORE USA 12 Latvia 1 Games Tonight: Sweden vs. Russia (Sweden leads Russia 2-0 in the 1st period) Canada vs. Slovakia
  8. Morin PP goal with less than a minute left. 12-1 USA
  9. Kreider with the penalty shot........ He SCORES for the hat trick!!! 11-1 USA
  10. USA Penalty Shot coming up.
  11. Two big saves by Lee. Lee shouldn't even have to make big saves in this game! Still 10-1 USA.
  12. Stephan 10-1 USA. Nice job finishing.
  13. Zucker, 9-1 USA. Delayed Penalty was coming up on Latvia.
  14. Penalty on Latvia, 4x4 coming up.
  15. Another stupid penalty by the Americans.
  16. 7-1 USA after 2 Periods. Very bad period for the Americans. Sloppy at times, undisciplined penalties and too much fancy passing and stickhandling around the net when just shooting the puck is called for. These things are a mere annoyance vs. Latvia, but they'll absolutely kill us vs. Canada on Thursday if we repeat them.
  17. Kreider 7-1 USA. About time we restored some order around here.
  18. 6-1 USA. Latvia scores after about 2 minutes of 5x3 PP time.
  19. My, aren't we being greedy during the holiday season!
  20. 6-0 USA after 1 Period.
  21. redwing77, I agree with you on the arrogance factor, but I kind of like being the underdog; that makes it even better when we beat them! And all that arrogance does is motivate other countries to improve their programs. Didn't Don Cherry make the comment before the 2006 winter games that Canada could field three teams and win Gold, Silver and Bronze? And what did the "Maple Leaf Boys" win? As I recall, it was Jack Squat nothing. I am willing to bet comments like that only serve to motivate the other teams vying for Gold. So let Canada be the team to beat every year; I'll gladly accept the underdog role.
  22. redwing77, Agree with you 100%; it's too early to judge these teams. The Swiss have a good goaltender and that's about it. Latvia looks to have nothing. The Czechs have fallen from where they were five years ago in Grand Forks. The games against the bottom feeders are only good to figure out your defensive pairings and forward line combos. The U.S. will probably smoke Latvia too, but that won't prove anything. Personally, I like the U.S. team better this year than I have since we won the gold in 2004. The roster is built on speed and athleticism, the goaltending looks to be solid and we have the best developer of young hockey talent (Dean Blais) as the head coach. This team should win a metal this year.
  23. I have been measuring it at home since Wednesday night and my total is close to the NWS Office at 25 inches. The last storm in Grand Forks with this much snow that I can recall was January 6th-8th, 1989 when we got about two feet of snow from Friday Noon thru Sunday Morning. I was in Junior High and it was awesome to have that much snow to work with when building snow forts! Sometimes I wish I was a kid again and this is one of those times.
  24. My localized snow total since 11pm Christmas Eve is 16 inches as of 7pm today. Add that to the 3.5 inches we got Wednesday night-Thursday morning and that's a storm total of 19.5 inches. Amounts will vary from place to place depending on where the heavy snow bands set up. Grand Forks has been in the firing line pretty much all day long. No travel is advised in Grand Forks right now. Unless you have a four-weel drive vehicle, I wouldn't even try to drive until tomorrow afternoon when things are supposed to calm down and we can get some of these streets cleared off.
  25. I measured about a foot of snow outside my place around 1pm this afternoon. That is since 11pm last night. The snow is expected to continue tonight into Saturday morning before winding down. The one positive with this storm is that the winds are in the 25 to 35 mph range instead of into the 40-45 mph range like some previous storms we've had.
