  1. Period-specific video games, television shows and movies are not racist; they are just telling our history. Flying the Confederate flag on government property is implying official government sanction of the symbol and what it stands for, so that is why states are removing it from government property.
  2. So if we just got rid of all the Great Society programs, everything would magically fix itself? I think you are listening to too much Ron Paul.
  3. State's Rights.....to keep and own slaves. The entire Confederate economy was built on the often-flogged backs of African slaves who were brought here against their will. The plantation owners wanted to maintain slavery so that they wouldn't have to actually pay hired help to run their businesses. When they lost the Civil War, they came up with "Slavery-Lite", a.k.a. Jim Crow, enforced via the terror of the KKK and the "White Citizen Councils". I suppose Jim Crow was about "State's Rights" and the "Declaration of Independence" too, right? The two worst things to happen to this country were 1) Lincoln's assassination and 2) the backroom deal Republican Rutherford B. Hayes cut with the Democrats which gave him the White House and in turn ended Reconstruction. You can trace a lot of the social problems in 'Murica today to those two events.
  4. The 13 original colonies were not a "nation" per-se (I would argue there wasn't an "American Nation" until the Constitution was ratified). They were British subjects who happened to live in North America instead of Great Britain. They weren't allowed to vote for the politicians that taxed them and otherwise passed laws they had to live with. That was the root cause of the American Revolution. The Confederates could not say the same thing. They had representation in Congress. They voted for President like every other state. They just didn't get what they wanted in 1860 (Lincoln won), so they decided to rebel against the government that they once pledged allegiance to. Apples and Oranges.
  5. Only in 'Murica are traitors and subversives cannonized and honored as if they are heroic figures. In any other country, the "rebs" would have been executed for treason.
  6. Yeah, it's TR's fault that he was born into wealth. What matters is what he did with his life, which is way more than most people (including myself) ever do with their short time on this planet. But go right on blaming him for things he had no control over if it helps promote your case.
  7. Actually, I think TR built himself up using a gym his dad built.
  8. Considering all the failures they have witnessed over the years, they shouldn't talk too much.
  9. It wasn't brought up in 1994, but it was brought up several years prior when some people said we can't use Knights because "Climax-Fisher has asked us not to" and wah, wah, wah. I was a student at Central during that time and I remember getting sick and tired of hearing what everybody else wanted when those people had little or no stake in the future of the school. I didn't care what Climax-Fisher wanted then and I still don't care today. And that is why I am not particularly sympathetic towards people that don't want us to use Roughriders because GFRR uses it. As a result of genuflecting to everybody else, we got stuck with Maroon and Grey for several years, which was a total joke. I do not want UND to make the same mistake.
  10. You did not understand the point I was trying to make. If we don't select a new name and logo now, this issue will come back over and over again until we do. That is a needless distraction that will suck the energy out of the institution as a whole and make us look incompetent and indecisive. That is not good for the overall image of UND and in today's media-obsessed culture, perception = reality. The sooner a new name is chosen and implemented, the better.
  11. I was only criticizing Kelley's handling of the nickname selection process. A committee to come up with a process for another committee to use to find an acceptable name while having to sift through a bunch of asinine ideas from our long-time enemies (FU and UMTC) to find something half-way decent? I really think a more streamlined process could have been employed that still gave people some ownership of the issue. You are right about Kelley being thrown to the wolves on this whole nickname issue; he inherited the mess and has spent way too much time on it. This is another reason why picking a new name and logo is important, so that Kelley's successor can govern the school without this millstone around his or her neck.
  12. Thank you for totally missing the point. And we are a long, long ways away from accomplishing what you described. I wish that wasn't so, but it is.
  13. Really? You don't think that this whole nickname soap opera doesn't distract from the overall mission of UND (and not just athletics either)? Instead of focusing on making our programs more competitive, we are fighting this battle and have been for almost 10 years now. The bad press we get from this story cannot be helpful with recruiting and our overall image in the region. Thanks to Kelley's mismanagement of this whole nickname selection process, we look like a bunch of bumbling fools. The sooner we resolve this issue, the better. And going with "North Dakota" will not do that.
  14. This is why a new name must be chosen. Otherwise, we will continue lagging behind NDSU, SDSU and our Big Sky brethren. And I for one am sick and tired of being the red-headed stepchild of the Dakota Four. And no, having REA and UND Men's Hockey does not more than make up for it, despite what some people on here like to think.
  15. I believe I said I could live with North Stars; my preferred choice is Roughriders.
  16. I also could live with North Stars as a name. The only ones that can't are the ones obsessed with what Webster's Dictionary says about it.
  17. Too bad Rob Port isn't on the nickname committee. Otherwise, I might have to worry about this.
  18. They don't meet the criteria, let's hope they stick with it.
  19. As long as we aren't considering Spoilers (GPR) or Bruins (Fargo South), I can live with it!
  20. Remember, variations on names could come into play here. :"Stars" without the "North" in front of it might be what is being considered here. But that is just pure speculation; I have no contacts on the Committee (maybe gfhockey does though! ).
  21. So you are saying that ticking off Gopher fans is a bad idea? Anything that gets under their skin is a positive, IMHO. Besides, we could use just "Stars" without the directional abjective in front of it and it probably would STILL tick them off! For the record, I voted Roughriders in the poll and I think that is what it will end up being.
  22. To be honest, I have drastically cut back on my fast food consumption; it's amazing how bad it is for you.
  23. You obviously don't understand the difference between a public message board and a scientific survey. The former is not an accurate measure of public opinion, while the latter usually is.
  24. Actually, someone on here said that the whole "process" is pure window dressing and that UND was negotiating for the legal rights to the North Stars name and logo. I guess we'll find out soon enough.
