  1. Aren't a lot of collegiate sports programs privately funded, at least a good chunk of them?
  2. Yes he was. He did UND football back in the early 1990's, when Roger Thomas was just starting to get us into playoff contention. I believe he called our first two ever playoff victories in 1993. Then he was unceremoniously dumped by KNOX right before the 1994 season, which prompted an on-air op-ed from Pat Sweeney criticizing the move. RIP, Scott, you don't have to struggle anymore.
  3. The Grand Forks Heraldo weighed in on this topic this morning: http://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/local-sports/3955721-state-hockey-future-state-hockey-gf-looking-bleak So let me get this straight. The only sport that Grand Forks is a "preferred site" for now is tennis?!?! Are you *bleeping* kidding me?!?! Is this someone's idea of a bad joke?!?! Grand Forks isn't Fargo or Bismarck, but it isn't Mapes either. The idea that Grand Forks will be stuck with tennis, while everybody else gets something is outrageous and is not acceptable. If any tournament belongs in Grand Forks, it is hockey. Football probably belongs in Fargo. Class B boys and girls basketball probably belongs in Bismarck or Minot. You could make the argument that everything else can be rotated around the four major cities every few years. But apparently that isn't going to happen. And Bismarck better be careful, or else the "State B" will be headed east to Imperial Cass County too. And the worst part is, nobody in Grand Forks seems to care. Or at least I haven't heard it.
  4. Well, based on that logic, every single tournament should be in Fargo. And that is simply unacceptable.
  5. This is more about the future of the tournament, not this year.
  6. And that's a big problem? Do you really believe that? Please come up with a better rationale than that.
  7. And were the ticket sales all that great in Fargo last year? Hockey is still a second-rate sport in Imperial Cass County, I don't care how many parents have kids playing youth hockey.
  8. Agree with you on the start time complaints. How about Fargo and Grand Forks rotate the boys and girls hockey tournaments each year? That way, we don't have two hockey tournaments to accommodate in one city. That might make the whole thing work.
  9. We don't have to give up high school hockey tournaments in Grand Forks to allow our women's hockey team to have practice and game time on their home ice. That is the trap we must avoid falling into.
  10. This is a false choice to begin with. There is no reason why this can't be coordinated ahead of time by all the relevant stakeholders. And that has to take place several years in advance.
  11. I agree with this. The idea that Fargo should have all the state tournaments like the Twin Cities has all the Minnesota state tournaments is insane. If any issue could cause the western two-thirds of the state to secede from the Red River Valley, this might be it. And enough of the "scheduling conflicts" argument. Does anyone really believe that the Fargodome would ever give up the Dakota Bowl title games because of "scheduling conflicts"? Scheels Arena isn't exactly open all the time, either. So how can they ever host a tournament? It's called long-term scheduling and I think we have enough ice sheets in Grand Forks to make it happen. What we need is cross organizational cooperation to make it happen.
  12. That guy was a piece of work.
  13. Oh, I agree with you. But in sports, crazy things can happen.
  14. I'd rather walk barefoot on hot, broken glass than cheer for NDSU.
  15. Or if his team shocks everyone and wins the NCAA title next year. But I wouldn't bet the farm (or the house) on that.
  16. The moments.....don't get me started on that butt-ugly trophy. What was wrong with the old Broadmoor Trophy; I loved that one.
  17. I agree with you, but I also have fond memories of those Final Five titles we won in 2006, 2010-12.
  18. Hockey used to have 8 teams and had best two out of three playoff series at the higher seed. The Hrkac Circus swept St. Lawrence at home in 1987. Mar. 20/Mar. 21 St. Lawrence NCAA Quarterfinal W 3-1/W 6-3
  19. You and I feel this way. But there were people on this forum that wanted to keep the name and logo at all costs.
  20. But he isn't the one skating out there and not making plays. So he should get as much time as he wants. Right? (extreme sarcasm) We took this approach with Mussman, let us not make that same mistake with Idalski.
  21. It's never been said, but it has been implied many times. In any event, both those extremes are insane and take all the fun out of following this team.
  22. #nattysonly.......no, that is silly. #nattysdontmatter.......equally as misguided.
  23. Cripes, we don't need this right now!
  24. Step away from the ledge. The weekend was ugly to watch, but a sweep is a sweep and I like our team this year.
  25. Roche was one of the best skaters we have ever had on the blue line. His skating looked almost effortless, like he was gliding on the ice almost at will. I miss that guy.
