Schmidt has been gone for awhile. I imagine he's a much different coach than he was the last time he was in Grand Forks.

If Fruechte keeps everything the same, we might as well put Bubba back in.

One other thought: When Rube Bjorkman stepped down as head hockey coach in 1978, the hockey program had struggled for a decade. Bjorkman was replaced by one of his assistants. We still call him Gino. And he made big changes to the program. Good changes. Whether it would work out in this case is the big question.

That would be before the portal opens on Monday, which is a good thing.

If Chaves does this internal hiring crap again, my expectations will remain rock bottom until I see something that suggests otherwise.

So all this talk about a "national search" was just a farce to begin with? What is Chaves' obsession with internal hiring? It smacks of high school thinking.

If we were a top 5 FCS program, it would make sense to hire internally. But we are not. So it doesn't make sense.

You are right. I am just beyond frustrated with this program and the whole athletic department in general. We must get this right.

Every great coach started somewhere. Brian Kelly went from GVSU to Central Michigan to Cincinnati to Notre Dame to LSU. Don't immediately dismiss a candidate because they coach a lower level of FB.

It is listed as a minimum requirement, not a preferred requirement. I still think they would have announced it already if they wanted to go with Fruechte.

Fruechte has 7 years coaching experience. The minimum number of years required in the job posting is 8. It's almost like they did that to send a message that they are going external.

There supposedly was a lot of interest in this job once it was posted. So that means there may be a lot of quality applicants to sort out.

This would be a El Cheapo bargain basement hire. No, no, no.

If they wanted to go internal, they would have announced it already. No point in spending time and money on a national search if you have no intention of hiring externally.

That's what I've been thinking from the start.
