Official UND Football Regime Change Thread
UND-FB-FAN replied to fightingsioux4life's topic in Football
I hope so. 2015 and most recently 2017 suggests otherwise. UND needs better players and schematics. Players win the games, but coaches can lose them. Not just culture and good luck (injuries) in my opinion, although those things are needed too. Example: if you take all the average (non top contributors) players off of the undefeated 2017 high school teams of North Dakota (good culture/winning tradition) and form a college team with them (and none get injured), they still won't win more than a game or two vs Big Sky competition. Example could be better, but my point is you simply need "good" players before everything else can "sprinkled on".- 428 replies

That's a bit much @MafiaMan UND is not in a different division/classification or level of Conference (P5 vs others), despite what the NDSU propaganda may suggest. Don't fall for that trap. UND and NDSU will in fact be in the *same* conference soon. I like the Auburn vs. Alabama comparisons. NDSU will be getting the "better" recruits for the foreseeable future, so it's up to UND to use all available pipelines (local and distant high school, FBS dropdowns, JuCo players) to get capable players and then use them with innovative schemes to ultimately outscore the opposition. Its quite obvious the current UND level of recruit WITH the UND scheme of 2017 is not a winning combination.- 428 replies

Make it about 3 or so student-athletes at that position would be huge ... 1 would be, let's say, only a start ...

If the culture has changed as much as some imply, that may actually justify change more so than the pathetic on-the-field results.- 428 replies

Alabama has several injuries and now has *a single loss* ... well, this scenario certainly now justifies UND's implosion of 2017. I completely get it now.- 428 replies

Saying things stale homers don't agree with is not trolling if it is in fact my opinion. DICTIONARY trolling× troll2 trōl/ verb gerund or present participle: trolling 1. informal make a deliberately offensive or provocative online post with the aim of upsetting someone or eliciting an angry response from them. "if people are obviously trolling then I'll delete your posts and do my best to ban you" The exceptionally passionate of UND's fan base which make up this forum have a difficult time acknowledging necessary change. Maintaining the status quo is not supporting UND; in fact, its betrayal when you've just gone 3 - 8.

Yes, a requirement to get into a superior football conference. Great move for UND football.
-
Your dislike for the superior MVFC relative to the BSC makes you quite irritable. I wouldn't expect different from someone who "hates everyone in UND's new conference". It's okay to be biased and favor UND as I certainly fit into that category as well; however, every once and awhile you have to call a spade a spade.

The "Bizon's" play big boy football. USD has a good squad this year. 45-7 dismantling suggests that. Meamwhile, Bubba and UND are trying to "ease" on in their freshmen who just "aren't quite ready yet". I don't enjoy playing devil's advocate, but it's needed some around here some. UND football is currently not deserving of excessive praise.

NAU beat Sacramento State, UC Davis, and Montana State. All three teams UND looked like !@#$ against. So maybe you're right ... UND lost to both Montana and EWU, does that count for something in your world?
-
Congrats on the win. Western Illinois had a good team this season. I think Weber State and SUU are by far the two best teams in the Big Sky Conference this season (as evidenced here in the postseason).
-
They're in the Big Sky ... that's how. They played a lot of poor teams. Same teams UND looked like !@#$ against.

Recruiting needs to improve. Maybe the 2017 UND team performed appropriately based on the attrition and injuries, but the program has underperformed based on the depth and recruiting situation. Too many freshmen playing and not enough sophomores and juniors. Who wins the games? The players. Who recruits the players? The coaches. The coaches need to get their sh*t together and get this roster right. It was not put together the way it should've been for 2017 and I'm sticking to that. I expect UND to be over .500 every season; anyone justifying less is a problem within the fan base. The injuries were horrible, but it never ever should've dropped UND to a pathetic 3 wins. If this staff doesn't figure out how to recruit and next season goes poorly also, people need to be shown the door.- 428 replies

Yes, I expected it. It's well established that good college football coaches can change the culture and wins in two to three seasons. Poor coaches take far longer and/or never accomplish it. The fact you expected it to take longer is worrisome - it exhibits the lack of expectations for UND football. People are satisfied with .500 seasons (as long as excuses or specifiers are attached) which is bull$%!# in my opinion.- 428 replies

Okay ... youre missing the point. The 2011 squad was nothing special. It only got people excited for the 2012 season (UND's first Big Sky Conference season), which was one of several disappointing seasons under Mussman's watch.- 428 replies

Bubba and his staff are far superior than Mussman. Good God people, Mussman was awful as a head coach. Don't exaggerate too much folks. There's always a line and some have crossed it with the above comments.- 428 replies

Exactly. If UND doesn't have the players to play a pro style ball control offense, for example, then whether we like it or not, UND may have to adopt a different offensive scheme. Same goes for cover 0 defense if our defensive backs just can't cover 1-on-1 downfield. Scheme needs to be adjusted per personnel.- 428 replies

This is a very level headed post. I agree with it. I think the philosophy/style that Bubba is implementing is perfect for this region and for championship football. However, with that said, you still need to recruit to this style; it remains to be seen if Bubba can recruit and secure the linemen and defenders necessary to play this brand of physical football (especially with the MVFC looming).- 428 replies

Let's not get desperate here. Moving forward, when UND makes hires in the future, UND needs to consider those who may not have previous ties to UND. The guys who helped UND have Division II success will only be able to contribute so much in the modern Division I era. The whole "good ol' boys" idea is dangerous and can (has) get UND into trouble. I'm for hiring young coaches with bright futures but limited experience (former position coaches or quality control) and/or experienced coaches with DI FBS experience. Places outside of UND most certainly have ideas that UND could desperately use right now and into the future.- 428 replies

Perhaps, UND (and apparently many of their "supporters") just doesn't have the current mindset (and perhaps funds) necessary to be overly competitive in men's sports other than hockey. There is hope though. Not with next season magically bringing better luck (as the injury theorists say), but rather President Kennedy and the eventual new athletic director.- 428 replies

Going 3-8 during a championship expectation season does rightfully raise questions and concerns, though. Don't you agree? Endorsing the "it will all be better with less injuries" mindset doesn't do much for the program's current state. That type of complacency is troublesome in my opinion; it relies too much on good fortune and not proactive change.

UND can still dictate the uniform design. I doubt the UND traditionalists that head the programs will ever sign off on anything so modern and weird looking.
