  1. Rutgers, St. Cloud has made a name for itself for trying to be ultra-liberal. Like usual they are just trying to copy the U of M. The U of M ranks up there with Berkley, Minneapolis as a whole is a very liberal city. In fact there city council is 100% Democrat and Green party (at least they were when I lived down there). Apparantly Duluth just employed a paranoid schizophrenic, maybe they felt sorry for him like Princeton did for John Nash.
  2. It appears SCSU isn't alone in their faculity being a taco short of a combo platter. Congrats UMD Glad to see the taxpayers of MN pay this nut-jobs salary. New inquiry into Wellstone death urged October 26, 2004 WASHINGTON, D.C. -- University of Minnesota Duluth Professor James Fetzer, a Kennedy assassination theorist, called on Congress Monday to investigate the death of Sen. Paul Wellstone, who Fetzer believes was the target of a White House plot. Fetzer, a McKnight professor of philosophy, told a group of journalists and supporters at the National Press Club that the official government probe into the Wellstone plane crash on Oct. 25, 2002, whitewashed a broad Republican murder conspiracy, a charge he has made before. "Something very wrong has happened in this case," he said. Fetzer's assassination theory, now the subject of a book he co-wrote with a Northern Arizona University professor, Four Arrows, has been widely dismissed by government officials. The book is called "American Assassination: The Strange Death of Senator Paul Wellstone." Given the Republican Party's control of Congress, Fetzer acknowledged that his request "has more symbolic than practical significance."
  3. Pivetz takes over as Shanley coach By Eric Peterson, The Forum Published Tuesday, October 26, 2004
  4. I saw that on USCHO. Gender discrimination? Next I suppose they will ban "men's" and "women's" sports as they perpetuate gender stereotypes. Stearns County CC can be the first in the country to have co-ed sports at every level.
  5. After seeing how the refs are going to call the games under the 'new guidelines', I question if players like Greene and Jones are more helpful than they are hurtful. Greene is an incredible player, but does he do the team any good when he is not allowed to play his game? Same goes with Smaby and Jones. I think Jones will be able to adjust, but I'm not so sure about Smaby and Greene. The Maine series showed how much of an asset these guys can be, the refs called it tight but for the most part allowed them to play their game. I cannot comment on the Kato series, but on Fri Anderson did not allow the Sioux D to play their game. It nearly cost the Sioux the game. On Sat, the Sioux played very timid trying to pokecheck, not tying up their man. As far as the offense goes, I think it is too early to say much about them. Clearly they are not playing well together. Genoway is having a good year, but he is a set up guy, he is not going to score a ton of goals. Murray and Stafford need to step it up. Porter was one of the better players last weekend, he is never going to score a ton of points, but his forechecking abilities should help create scoring opportunities. I'd give the offense a couple more weeks to see if they start gelling before I'd start to worry. Goaltending has been good. Even on Sat Parise looked OK, it could have been much worse after the 1st period. Remember last year? The beating the Sioux put on the Gophers was great, but later in the season the Gophers caught up. I think the Sioux showed some character on Fri night. They have the talent, they just need to gel together as a team.
  6. Very nice recap, I was just going to make a similar post. Greene looked very timid out there, clearly he was backing off trying to not get called. They will have to work to find a happy medium. Radke did start to look good offensively. The biggest surprise IMO is Stafford. He looked so good against Manitoba, then went MIA. I still expect him and Murray to get it together, sometimes it takes a while for players to gel, remember they've only been practicing for three weeks. Pulling Parise may have been a good idea, but none of those goals were soft, he still played very well in the 1st, it really could have been 5 or 6 - 0 after 1. The Sioux have the talent, they just need to start playing together. Clearly MN played better both games, but I would argue the talent level was pretty equal. On the other hand the Gophers look very good, especially for the # of Freshmen they have. Gogliski and Hagemo look very good. Potulny should compete for the scoring lead in the WCHA.
  7. Boy PCM you are sounding like the grouchy old men in 306A, do you also sit on your porch during the summer yelling at the damn neighborhood kids to get off your lawn The above post that said respect is a two way street summed it up best IMO. At the same time, I don't feel having a loud student section that gets into the game is a bad thing. I expect many of the students to act like college students, I didn't see any students getting out of hand. I did see some of the men in 306A cross the line, if it would have been someone in the student section calling out someone in 306A I can guarantee you they would be tossed out, and possibly charged.
  8. I'll try and rationalize why I was so ticked off. 1. My wife and I would prefer to sit outside of the student section, she likes to sit most of the game and doesn't care for the swearing (elementary teachers ). But the price is right, and I like the atmosphere especially during the Gopher series. 2. We sat right on the edge of 307. The entire student section in 308 and 309 was standing, so everyone in our section stood so we could see. From the second the puck dropped there were about 4 men in 306(a) that were continually yelling (including swearing) at us to sit down. I calmly (yes I was calm) told the guy sitting across from my wife and I to please stop yelling at us, and the students typically stand, there isn't much that can be done. This guy then asked me to step outside and he'd "shut me up and make me sit down". 3. Along with the tough guy there were 2 older men that were yelling at us. They were the ones that went to security. The security guard shrugged him off, saying there is nothing she can do. By the end of the period they had gotten several REA employees and cops listening to their hissy fit. This brought on the start of several guards/cops coming up and down our isle trying to get us to sit down. My wife and I were perfectly fine with sitting down, but we both have an once of common sense and realize we are in the student section and are likely going to have to stand. 4. Throughout the rest of the game 4-5 people from 306a continued to yell at us. The two older men had a cop by them yelling at him to kick us all out. 5. Soon after this an REA employee came up and down the isle and said he is going to escort every student found standing out of the building, and we will not be allowed back inside for the remainder of the year - he said something about cancelling our season tickets. I calmly told this guy that there is little that can be done, after all this is the student section. He then told me another word out of me and I'm out for the season. I don't appreciate being treated like this, nor does my wife. I swear less than 10 seconds after this the board had the Stand Up and Cheer thing. 6. Overall I felt the entire night I was being yelled at by some very childish adults. The REA gave into their fits, and began threatening the students. Like I said before, I would prefer to sit elsewhere but I don't complain about the students because I know what to expect. I have been to several other college hockey rinks and the vast majority of the time the students are standing and are much more vulgar than the UND students. Same goes for high school games.
  9. It wasn't just in the 3rd it was the entire game. You had to have been in 307 to see how bad it was. I don't appreciate being called out by a fellow Sioux Fan. The students were treated like absolute crap, the atmosphere was starting to get good and the REA security put a stop to it in deference to a couple of elderly people. I have been to thousands of hockey games, and never been as pissed as I was last night. I was threatened by a fellow fan, and threatened to get kicked out several times by security. I have no problem sitting down for most of the game, but I expect most students to stand. I guess I can't express how pissed off I was at the experience. The walk out idea, wasn't articulated as well as I hoped. I would actually do it during the CC or some other series and do it for 1/2 a period, not the entire game. Maybe some other form of civil disobediance. This is coming from a conservative law student, I can't imagine what some of the younger students in 307 thought about the game.
  10. The passing was pretty sloppy, but it is hard to get into a game when you are down 5-3 1/4 of the game . The Sioux didn't really have a chance to play 5 on 5. Most of the penalties called appeared to be legit, but there were a few diving Gophers out there. The Sioux D and goaltending were great. Radke even had a few good hits, Smaby blasted a one-timer ...on net! Zajac is a very complete player, he is a great two way forward. He was probably the best PK forward. Genoway is off to a great start, as are Spirko and Zajac. Stafford, Porter and Murray will hopefully hit their stride soon. In the intro they put shirts on the players - Thanks for that! I saw Andy Murray standing next to Darryl Sutter in between periods. It is not that often you see two NHL coaches hanging out in GF. Make that three - DB was at the game. I expect the shots to be much different tonight. Take away all the 5X3's the gophers had the shots were pretty even.
  11. I was also in 307 last night. I can't believe the students were not more pissed off. There were a couple of old guys in 306A that bitched and whined until they got there money back, then they bitched and whined until the REA security threatened to kick out any student found standing. One guy wanted to fight me when I told him to chill out, he was yelling at the students to sit down. This 45-50 year old fat bastard was actually calling me out. I have never seen grown men act like such children. They were freaking out at the REA and GF cops to toss out the entire student section. If I was the REA I would have told them to piss off. I am probably about 5 years older than most students, and would probably feel more comfortable not sitting in the student section. But I expect the students to stand and cheer and get a little wild. I find it very sad the REA caved in to these elderly peoples temper tantrums (the two complaining the most were well over 60). The one idiot from the REA said he was going to kick anyone found standing out for the entire season - if were sitting up top we don't have season tickets genious. I say the students organize a walk out - every student get up and leave during tonights game for half a period or so, see what the atmosphere is like then. Ok end rant, sorry if the above doesn't make sense, I'm still pissed about the way the students were treated. I was serious about organizing a walk-out I think it would be a great way to prove your point in a civilized manner. Show you are more mature than the cranky SOB's in 306A.
  12. Ya I really ripped on the kid I reported what I saw, I don't think I ripped on Oshie. I've re-read my post, I'm not sure what you are talking about "waiting for the puck". I didn't realized Broderson was Noterman's cousin, I would have kept an eye on him if I did. I guess I shouldn't really care what 1 post trolls say anyway.
  13. Ebay replaced the shady van selling electronics in the alley. I don't think they can dictate what is considered "offensive". They have no problem having over 8,000 items listed under "nazi" . Ebay Nazi
  14. Lee is still recovering from knee surgery. He is not 100%. He is just dressing from Lincoln so he has enough games to be eligible for the USHL playoffs. I'm sure he just touched the ice long enough to have technically "played".
  15. What do they care. The Bison are D1 Football powerhouse now. Didn't read the editors note about how they are going to devote all of their resources to covering this great program. The Forum is revving up for the huge match between the Bison and Southwestern Louisiana Community Technical school, the powerhouse program from the swamps of Louisiana. Plus in two weeks they travel to the powerhouse Southcentral Kentucky Miners School, in the Smokey Mountains.
  16. That would be sweet, like winning the lottery My aunt was with Vandeveldie's mom at the REA last weekend (for the elite games). She got to go on a tour of the REA with her - she's hoping my cousin steps it up and gets noticed by Hakstol
  17. $75M complex in works By Mary Jo Almquist, Andrea Domaskin and Gerry Gilmour,The Forum Published Wednesday, October 20, 2004 A local developer will soon turn to Fargo taxpayers and city leaders to help pay for a $75 million multipurpose arena and downtown office complex, city officials said Tuesday. As proposed, the project would encompass the block bound by First Avenue North, NP Avenue, Broadway and Roberts Street. The arena would be used for hockey, but the connected building would include offices, condominiums and retail space, according to CityScapes Development President Mike Bullinger. Although Bullinger confirmed Tuesday that his development company is behind the planning of the multiuse complex, he said costs and elevations are not complete. Details, including square footage and proposed private and public funding sources, will be released in about a month, he said. But preliminary plans already have been presented to top officials at City Hall. City commissioners Thomas Lane, Mike Williams, Linda Coates and Mayor Bruce Furness said they have seen drawings and have met with CityScapes representatives about the plan. The idea has been pitched as a multiuse arena that would seat up to 8,000, they say. Commissioner John Cosgriff was not in his office Tuesday and couldn't be reached for comment. The project would be paid for through a combination of sources, including a possible tax-increment financing district and a city sales tax, Williams said. The sales tax would need to be approved by 60 percent of Fargo voters and would be handled either through a special election or during city elections in June 2006, he said. A tax-increment financing district, commonly called a TIF, needs City Commission approval. With a TIF, the city would either pay for upfront demolition and relocation costs of existing buildings and businesses or would simply grant a tax exemption on the property for a period of time. The increased tax revenue that would come from redevelopment would pay for the investment over time. Williams said the proposal he saw was "impressive," though he has some reservations. While downtown could use a "traffic generator," Williams said he doesn't know if a hockey arena is the answer. No specific tenants have been identified for the space, but Bullinger said it "will be for the kids of Fargo-Moorhead." He said the hockey aspect of this proposed arena was not designed for North Dakota State University, even though the university was a central character the last time a downtown hockey arena was proposed. Still, NDSU Athletic Director Gene Taylor said university officials were informed of the proposed project. "They showed it to us but we're not going to add hockey anytime soon," Taylor said. It appears NDSU would also not play basketball in the new arena. Taylor compared it to the University of North Dakota playing basketball in Ralph Engelstad Arena, which is mainly an ice venue. Taylor said the Bison Sports Arena on campus already seats at least 6,500 and that if the school needs a bigger arena, it would go to the Fargodome. City commissioners said they've also heard talk about Fargo wooing a semi-professional hockey team, but nothing has been settled. A pair of United States Hockey League teams each lasted less than five years in the Fargo-Moorhead area. The F-M Ice Sharks played at the Fargo Coliseum from 1996 to 2000. The Ice Sharks finished last in their division during their final season and averaged 1,214 fans. At the time of the Ice Sharks' departure, former team President Wayne Gadberry said low attendance was partly due to an arena that wasn't fan-friendly. The Fargo-Moorhead Bears played at the Moorhead Sports Center in 1995-96 and disbanded at the end of the regular season. The Bears made the playoffs, but were ousted from the league because of insufficient funds. If USHL hockey is what people want, that could be put in the Fargodome for about $5 million, Williams said. City officials describe the proposed development as being several stories tall and possibly including parking. Coates said the development, on paper, is quite large. "It has an imposing look," she said. Commissioners said the prospect of relocating a new Fargo City Hall into the structure also was suggested as a possibility during meetings with CityScapes. But Furness said he's not sure yet what role the city would play in the development project, if at all. Furness already has suggested he wants to go to voters, possibly in 2006, with a proposed extension of the Fargodome sales tax. The $250 million over 25 years the tax is expected to generate would pay for long-term water and wastewater improvements. The CityScapes project could be vying for that same money, and Furness said that would be one of his concerns. Furness wouldn't comment further on specific details of the project. If approved, a new multipurpose arena would be in addition to the Fargodome and the Civic Center, both of which host a variety of sports and entertainment events. Fargodome General Manager Rob Sobolik said any facility that would be added, regardless of its seating capacity, would be competition for the dome. Sobolik said he's only heard rumblings about the CityScapes proposal and hasn't had a sit-down meeting with the development company. Incidentally, former Fargodome General Manager Paul Johnson is now working with CityScapes on the arena project. Commissioners said they aren't sure what Johnson's role would be other than to help drum up community support for the downtown proposal. Johnson was fired from the Fargodome in May after fallout from a failed Missy Elliott concert. Sobolik, who was the assistant general manager, replaced him. Erv Inniger, a Fargo Dome Authority member and assistant NDSU athletic director, said he would be concerned if the proposed arena planned to host concerts. "You don't want to get into a situation where you're competing for concerts," similar to what the Ralph Engelstad Arena and Alerus Center are doing in Grand Forks, he said. Inniger said CityScapes contacted him about the project two months ago. "just to let us know what was going on." "The plans I saw were pretty early stage, but they were pretty powerful plans," he said. Commissioners said they're concerned a downtown block would need to be razed before construction could begin there. One building standing in the way is the Fargo Fire Department. But Williams said this would probably be less of a concern than some of the other historic buildings on the block. The proposed arena development would be kitty-corner from the recently refurbished former Northern School Supply building, which was saved from the wrecking ball and transformed into NDSU Downtown. Lane said the city would need to consider the historic value of the buildings in question and whether the arena project would justify tearing them down. Business owners on and near that block have mixed opinions about the project. Many say they've heard proposals are in the works for the site, though they haven't been directly contacted by CityScapes. Shannon O'Shaughnessy, who with her brother owns The Sports Bar at 619 NP Ave., said it "would take a lot of money" to convince her to move. "I love our location," O'Shaughnessy said. Paul Dobbins, owner of the restaurant PD's on First, said he had been contacted, though project details and a financial package were not discussed. PD's opened a year ago at 612 1st Ave. N. Dobbins said he has a 15-year lease in the building, one of several in the area owned by Nachhattar Gill. Gill declined to comment Tuesday. Wendy Huschka, manager of Fantasy's lingerie store, wouldn't be surprised to see the start of negotiations to relocate her business from 631 NP Ave. "We've heard rumors, but we don't have anything to comment on so far," Huschka said. Huschka and other downtown business managers and owners are curious. "Downtown needs something," said Jim Deardorff, who owns the Vinyl Connection on First Avenue North across the street from the former Fargo Cinema Grill, which would be razed as part of the project. For the past year, Deardorff has been looking across the street at a CityScapes sign that advertises a new development coming in 2005. Deardorff said he has been waiting for something to happen downtown since his business moved to 639 1st Ave. N. about 10 years ago. "I've been keeping my ear to the ground," he said. "Obviously I've gotten mold on my ear because nothing ever happens." Forum reporters Heath Hotzler, Jeff Kolpack and Mike Nowatzki contributed to this report
  18. From the site Driscol linked: FALLING Devereaux Heshmatpour: His feet are slow enough to make him look like a pylon in juniors, but that's not as disturbing as the rampant rumors that he's closer to being 28 than 18. Chris Lawrence: Huge winger has all the physical tools, but no heart or passion for the game. Riley Merkley: At 6-3 and only 162 pounds, a leaf blower could knock him off his skates. Riley, would you please just eat something? *** OUCH! I thought I was harsh on my perception of certain players.
  19. If you try and sell that ticket for more than $6 I will hunt you down chuckles.
  20. Welcome to the site. I think it would be a good idea to have one night a weekend tickets. It would also be a good idea to have packages for various series. In the end though there are more than enough students seats at the REA, the problem is everyone wants the lower seats, which there are obviously too few. The REA is going to use the "empty upper seats" as an excuse not to change anything. I can see their point, they obviously rake in a lot of cash with season tickets in 107 and 110.
  21. My comments on Oshie were from watching 3 games that mean little to nothing, it was not to be taken as anything more than that. He may have been sick or tired, I don't know. The third game he gave much more effort than the first two IMO. Even then he didn't forecheck very hard nor did he backcheck hard - you can tell he is used to being the guy that gets set up. I agree the talent level has some ups and downs, but I wouldn't put the ND and MN kids all on one side. Stadstad and Willert probably led the team in scoring for the weekend. IMO Willert is a genuine D1 prospect. Also, after Ammerman, the best D on the ice was probably Vigen from RR. Campbell, Selk and Mihulka looked a little out of place at times, but so did Clukey (although he just started playing). JK - you are right about Willert, this program was designed so kids like him could stay in HS and still compete at a higher level.
