2022-23 University of North Dakota Hockey Season
stoneySIOUX replied to Frozen4sioux's topic in Men's Hockey
We had five last year? Senden - C, Frisch - A, Sandy - A, Hain - A .... who am I missing? EDIT: Started with Jasper.... and added Ford when Hainer went down. Also, in 2016, we had SIX letters, not five, so I think your premise is spot on, Siouxforce. I don't see it as a problem whatsoever. -

Pretty cool for Sendo. First time in UND history that a player has worn a letter for three seasons. -

I mean, when the most recent example of us doing this many letters was 2016, I am willing to give it a shot. -

Nope. But again, why is it a big deal? -

2016 worked out ok. I don't see why it's a bad thing. Frankly, I think they could have had two more, if they wanted, in Jammer and Kleven. -

Bitch about it on the internet and feel sorry for ourselves because our lives have not turned out the way we expected and UND hockey is the only thing in the world we base our happiness on?????? -

I know they just got their whole team there this week. Well, about 10 days ago, so it's still a lot of juggling. I'll see what I can find out. EDIT: Apparently not a lot of on ice this week as they are doing off-ice testing, Ironman stuff this week. -

Was told today that we'll get captains next week. They haven't voted yet. -
I just just know what to tell you.
-
Yeah, how DARE they like only hockey. What a strange hill to die on.
-
You're right. We can't. Moving on.
-
Did we sell out the national championship? What an odd question. What are you trying to achieve here? Could UND fill an outdoor arena with Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, etc.? I absolutely think so. If you don't, so be it. What a silly argument.
-
Absolutely, yes.
-
They become less niche, but I think they barely get recognized once they stop winning titles.

Not gonna lie, I'm loving this team on paper. Got every element we need. Assuming upperclassmen taking steps (of course, not a guarantee), I'm very happy with this squad. Can't wait for the season to start. -
Realistically, basketball, which also has a bigger appeal than hockey in a national sense. Our fanbase for hockey may be bigger in all considerations, but that doesn't mean UND is noticed more by the larger part of the nation. With their success in FCS football, more people probably know more about NDSU than UND and could very well not know the difference lol. We all need to have a little bit of perspective haha. Like JohnBoy said, it's not really a big deal, though.
-
I agree with all of this, especially the bolded part. UND is good at hockey, a niche sport, and NDSU is good at FCS football, a niche sport, but with broader appeal. Nothing to really get our knickers in a twist about.
-
Really interested in Singleton. When he committed, all I heard was potential first rounder and that feels like it's definitely peaked. Hopefully he surprises everyone. The talent seems to be there.
-
YES. A big reason why I'm very excited for this season.

Not true at all. It is WAY harder to win a title than it used to be. Simple fact, honestly. That doesn't change the fact that teams get hot and win titles. In UMD's first title of their back-to-back, if you remember, they barely made the tournament and got hot. That happens. What DU and UMD have done is stay consistent. They are in the hunt at the end of the year every single season. UND is the same way. Once you get in, it's four games to bring it home and the most talented team, the one with the highest draft picks, doesn't always win (ie: Michigan, BU). Good recruiting keeps you consistently in the hunt. As much as people want us to win a title every year, it's just simply harder now than it used to be.

I'm not sure I've ever actually said that. Shaugs was the only one where I know we didn't offer and thus, would imply, we didn't really have a spot for him. No excuses other than other teams are trying for these kids, too. I'm very happy with our pipeline. Do I wish we've gotten more of our targets? Absolutely. With that said, our pipeline is really, really good and we have a couple big timers still on the hook, but have to keep battling. I agree with you that NIL is a big deal and the program will need to stay competitive there. Getting a Big 10 education is hardly a reason that a guy like Cooley picked the U over UND, however.
