They absolutely equate. If Berry misses for a 3rd year he needs to be done. Wisconsin showed what happens when you ride a coach too long and you hit bottom. I don't think Eaves was a bad coach and I don't think Berry is a bad coach, but there comes a point where your record doesn't lie.

Funny you bring that up, because watching this year's hockey team was about as exciting as watching a robotics competition......or watching someone else play a video game.
-
That may be true......but UND can still offer a facility and a near NHL like fan following that should still make a difference. Parity has also affected college basketball in the sense that most teams can be competitive on any given night....but at the end of the season you still see the Duke, Florida's, and Kentucky's of the world.

Don't really blame Hennesy and even the Hons Twitter rant. They make a living/partial living by schmoozing the UND hockey team. Not much different than Paul Allen and the Vikings.

University of North Dakota Hockey 2019-20 Season
TheFlop replied to Frozen4sioux's topic in Men's Hockey
Agree that JBD is the biggie this off-season. If he leaves it's a trainwreck. Adams would be best served transferring to another college and sitting out a year to get bigger/stronger. On a positive note, I think the Hain Senden Smith line has the potential to be one of those prolific lines people talk about years down the road. -
There's no choice but to be all in on next year's freshman class. 2-3 of them need to hit and come in Senden like for this team to have any chance.
-
Thank God this season is over.
-
Stay the course....trust the system.....pucks will start going in.
-
We also would have accepted "they are now worth about as much as your UND football tickets"
-
Yawn.

DU 3-1 with an empty netter. Poolman scores the lone goal for UND. No reason to think UND suddenly finds offense this week as they have to step up significantly from the last two weeks of competition.
-
Mismash has shown flashes, Weatherby still has a chance as bigger guys can take longer to develop, and Guch has turned into what I consider to be a solid 2nd line type of scorer........but Adams has been a bust and shown nothing his two years at UND. He's the underclassman version of Hoff or even Januitenean. He's small, not particularly quick/fast, he's not strong, and he doesn't have a knack for being in the right place at the right time. Not a good combination.
-
NCHC league covers travel costs for 1st round playoffs......but there's a pile of missed revenue for UND not hosting a series.
-
Significant for sure. Usually playoffs for any sport is considered a nice financial bonus......UND is gonna feel this like when Clark Griswold put the down payment on a new pool counting on a bonus that ended up just being the jelly of the month club.
-
Hockey was the first one in Grand Forks but was followed closely by others. The better soccer kids have to go to Fargo (or further) for indoor winter games. Basketball players have their AAU teams.....etc. The "traveling" portion of most sports used to last a month or two after the regular season if you were good enough/well connected.....or both. Now almost every sport is year round if you want it to be.

I think the situation will take care of itself once the local AAA midget team(s) start popping up to skim the top talent off leveling the playing field. IMO it's just a matter of time.
-
I hope Mayville can make a team work long term but they are a long ways off from competing even in ND right now. That play in game was there super bowl and they lost 8-0.

Peluso and entire Bismarck staff quit basically citing the climate of overbearing hockey parents, soft kids, and administrators that don't have the backbone to stand up for coaches. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.kxnet.com/amp/sports/bismarck-dickinson-sports/demons-head-coach-steps-down-following-fargo-davies-and-grand-forks-red-river-coaches-quitting/1804715266 Very sad. As a player and as a coach he single handedly put Bismarck hockey on the map.
-
Possible, but Davies making the title game wasn't really any upset. Davies only losing by 2 was.
-
Congrats to the Davies parents......despite your actions......you still lost......you lost a good coach.....and you set a horrible example for your kids.

Central has an amazing wrestling coach right now Coach Welsh. The guy is upbeat, puts a ton of time into the program, and gets that winning isn't the only thing that matters. Central also has a ton of volunteer/minimally paid assistants that are always willing to open up the gym early before school or even on weekends to give the kids a chance to workout if they want. Frankly, I'm not sure there's an overabundance of talent at Central but Welsh gets the wrestlers to perform up to their ability. RR just finished it's first season with new coach Andrew Kennedy, who was previously an assistant at Central. Kennedy is another class act. Once again, I don't expect to see RR knocking off Bismarck at State anytime soon but Kennedy will do a good job building the program there. Grand Forks is very fortunate to have the wrestling coaches that they have.

Somewhere DaveK is blasting Whitesnake Here I Go Again on a Kenwood cassette deck.

You nailed it especially the part about privatization pricing people out of sports. Traditionally when the school boundaries were more equal (socio-economically) Central and RR would battle back and forth in most sports. Personally I think that is healthy for a town. The alternative is you can have a situation like in Fargo where Fargo North is basically dead. It's not like South end kids are genetically superior to everyone that lives north of Demers......well actually these days could almost say north of 17th Ave S. However, they do tend to have the parents that prioritize sports AND have the means to provide them with the best opportunities to improve their skills (camps, elite teams, etc). It's not the parents or kids fault that they have the resources to do this, it's just the way the town is growing. I think you are also spot on with your idea that Grand Forks needs to switch to more of an East/West mentality rather than the traditional North/South mentality unless people want to see Central wither away.

Never said I hate it, just not interested in it. Judging by the talk in this thread (or lack of it about girls hockey) I'm not alone in that sentiment. Don't be mad at me that you are stuck watching girls hockey.
-
Ignorant much? The Grand Forks girls team has never won a state championship yet you are somehow trying to argue they've enjoyed the benefit of home ice? If home ice matters that much shouldn't they at least have won one title based on it being such an advantage? The best teams tend to win regardless of the location.
