UND vs. Notre Dame - Albany Regional - NCAA regional semis
rochsioux replied to stoneySIOUX's topic in Men's Hockey
Sadly, it was not the correct call. The call on the ice was onside. There was no replay that could conclusively say that the left wing was offside. The side views were blocked by fans. The only view you had was from the far end zone which will always be distorted due to the parallax view. There is no way to precisely determine the correct relationship between the players skate and the blue line from that far away. Not only is the foot above the blue line due to the skate blade but the blue line is not painted directly on top of the ice. If the evidence to overturn if not conclusive then you have to go with the call on the ice. Absolutely pathetic job by the linesman. Parallax example -

In 12 years under Hakstol UND won zero NC$$ championships. They made the NC$$ tourney all 12 years and the Frozen Four eight times and only lost the opening regional game twice (went 18-4 in regionals, 1-7 in Frozen Fours). If you had to chose, would you rather have Berry’s tournament record or Haks ? Berry is 3-3 in regionals, 2-0 in frozen fours with one frozen four appearance in six years (Covid year a non counter) and made the tourney in 4 of 6 years. For me I think I would take Hakstol’s. The seasons were more fun when they would get to the frozen four so often. Not making the tourney or losing the first game is a real downer. Granted, losing in the frozen four was no fun either but it was a lot of fun winning the regionals so often…the season lasted a lot longer. Under Berry there was only one fun post season, and some years no post season. Not sure one title makes up enough for all the other quick exits. -

2016: 34-6-4 National Champs 2017: 21-16-3 Lost to BU first round 2018: 17-13-10 Missed the tourney 2019: 18-17-2 Missed the tourney 2020: 26-5-4 Covid 2021: 22-6-1 Lost to UMD in regional title 2022: 24-14-1 Lost to ND first round Since the NC$$ title six years ago UND has won one tournament game beating the mighty AIC last year. Let that sink in a bit, ONE win in six years. Don’t know about anyone else but I expect a little more. Conference titles are nice but lose a little significance for me when we can’t even get out of a regional. -

Fitting way to lose the game. Our penalty kill has been below average all year. We lacked offensive talent so we need to win low scoring games. The margin of error is very small so we can’t afford to make mistakes and take penalties. We made a mistake, took a penalty and our season is over. My question is, what are the coaches doing with recruiting that left the offensive skill so thin this year? What happened with Rizzo and Morrow? If the portal didn’t exist what would our goaltending plan have been? -
I’m going with UND to beat ND 2-1 in ot. Don’t see UND scoring many goals so they will have to hold ND to one goal max. One stat that jumps out is UND’s penalty kill which is only 78.7%. We probably lose this game if keep taking 5 minute majors. We also must score first, our record when trailing after one is not very good (1-8-1) while ND is 14-0 when leading after one.

Probably not enough bandwidth to stream it on a plane but you could try. Otherwise you could listen to the radio broadcast.

Does the selection committee consult with Mel Pearson to ensure the matchups for Michigan meet his approval? Or do they risk that Michigan will cancel a playoff game if they don’t like the matchup?
-
It could also be good for some fans when the regional sites are so close. You could attend all games in two regionals.

The margin for error this year is razor thin. Our best chance at a natty is to get a favorable draw. If we face teams that have a lot of speed we are apt to struggle…doesn’t mean we can’t win but it will be tough. IMO, this years team is just not quite fast or quick enough and lacks some high end offensive players. Couple that with a below average penalty kill and it’s easy to see why our goal differential is not what we have come to expect. We will need to win games 2-1 and to do that in the playoffs we need to limit mistakes and win the special teams battle. The bad news is that we are definitely not the best team in the NC$$ tourney. The good news is the best team doesn’t win too often.

2021-22 University of North Dakota Hockey Season

I believe there was 12 freshman on that team. Similar in numbers to the 2005-2006 which had a lot of very skilled freshman, possibly the best collection of talent I have seen on any Sioux team. -

On a side note, has UND ever had a goalie that loses his stick as often as Driscoll ? Seems to happen at least once in every game. -

The 5 min major in the third is a complete joke. They reviewed that and made it a 5 ? WTF were they watching ??? -

If Denver wins both in regulation and UND loses tomorrow then Denver wins the tie breaker and is the #1 seed. I don’t want to share anything with them. -
If Taylor Ward wants a 5th year and wants to transfer, I would be more than happy if UND were to offer.
-
Only 5 d-men and no extra skater tonight. A loss would hurt our pairwise…might even be the loss that keeps us out of the NC$$ tourney. Can’t really expect a college hockey team to play under these circumstances, especially the second game in two days. WWMD ?
-
Please just get rid of the 3x3 OT and shootouts. They are almost irrelevant and an unnecessary gimmick. Go back to a 5x5 OT and if still tied just leave it as a tie. If we score in OT everyone thinks it’s a win and if the other team scores they think we lost. The only thing that really matters is the pairwise and for that it is basically a tie (.55 win vs .45 loss in OT, .5 win for both teams in a shootout).

Brilliant coaching by Berry to save Calder for the extra round. -

Very sad commentary on this years team (accurate but sad). We are playing at home and we are happy we are able to win a game. This is UND, not some bottom tier program. Pathetic. We should be expecting to win both at home, not hoping to squeeze out one win. -
Leave the regular season OT rules as is, though I would prefer a 15 min OT vs 10. In the playoffs it should be predetermined which team will get the ball first in OT before the game even starts. You can then factor that into the way you play at the end of the 4th quarter. Say you’re trailing by 7 late in the game and you score a TD. If you know the other team gets the OT kickoff you might want to go for two. I would grant the home team the option to kick or receive to start OT since they are the higher seed (they would have to declare before the game started if they want to kick or receive). Then play out the OT under the current rules.

They were big scorers in the WCHA. By moving to the NCHC they play a more difficult schedule so it should not be unexpected if they have a drop off in scoring. Last year Ford and Calder combined for about a goal/game. This year they have combined for around a half a goal/game. Having said that, neither of them are way off on points/game vs last year. Ford has dropped from .903 to .773 and Calder 1.000 to .833. The most glaring drop off is in goals scored by Ford. Last year 16 in 31 games, this year 3 in 22. On the plus side he already has two more assists than last season.

The old slogan “speed kills” is so very true. Lack of speed also kills, unfortunately it is killing UND. -

IMO, the problem is more with our skill level than the design of the PP. The overall skill level of the two PP units is not where it needs to be. -

At this point we are almost 2/3 of the way through the season. There has been no improvement recently, in fact you could argue regression. Their goal differential after 23 games in +5. This does not scream “good team” but just reinforces the fact that this years team is very average. Looks like there is a very good chance this will be the third year out of seven where Berry coached team misses the NC$$ playoffs
