  1. Since the School District is a part owner along with the Park Board and the Youth Hockey Association they will need to keep that main arena full. I don't think it will be used for any regular season games, but will be used for regional type tournaments. Let's make another bid for the WJC with the REA and the UP Center. No one could complain about the hotels situation with both Fargo and GF hosting and only 60 minutes of interstate traffic between the two venues. I'll be very interested to see if they can get the facility built in 18 months.
  2. I thought that this was an appropriate place to reference the link. Sorry I bored you.
  3. Nice article on Wurden in today's Forum. Looks like some NHL teams are looking into drafting him. Here is the link: http://www.in-forum.com/Sports/articles/157350
  4. Press confrence is scheduled for 7:30 tonite at Colliseum. It coincides with the 23rd annual Flyer International Squirt Tournament's "Squirt Olympics". If everything went as planned this week, Blais was in town Tuesday to hammer out a contract, the group will unveil the formal plans for the UP Center, have Gino on hand to announce an USHL expansion team, and introduce their new coach. Should be a very energetic confrence with close to 1500 squirts running around. I don't know what is going to happen besides that the UP Center is a go. I have no inside info on the USHL team or on Blais, other than he was in town Tuesday to negotiate. Tune in to your 10:00 news!! Exciting times for Fargo hockey!!!
  5. South didn't play in state in 1992. We lost to Botineau in one of the play-in games. I know I was skiing in Big Sky instead of playing at state. South did make it back to state in 1993 and beat Minot in the first round. Of course during my freshman year in college they won it all for the first time in 1994, in a great game against VERY good Central team led by both Panzers.
  6. I don't know how the Ivy's do things for athletes, but I know for a fact that Harvard does not offer academic scholarships. They offer them on need based only. If your parents have the money to pay, pay up, or your spot goes to one of the thousands of smart rich kids waiting in the wings. Of course the endowments at Yale and Harvard are large enough to cover tuition for every student and still not dip into principle, but they still charge close to $50,000 per year for tution. Gotta love the law of supply and demand. Hey I don't have to worry, I'm sure my to boys (4 & 1) will be getting full rides to UND on hockey scholarships!!!
  7. Yes, we need BSU to get hot and hope that St. Lawrence keeps playing well and gets into the tourney. It's not a road win, but a neutral ice quality win. I don't like being at 12, but with 2 or 3 wins in the last couple of game and we should be fine.
  8. Plans Uncovered- FYI, very rough idea of the building: [url="http://www.in-forum.com/articles/index.cfm?id=156673
  9. More info in today's forum: Info on arena: http://www.in-forum.com/articles/index.cfm...mp;section=news Info on Blais: Dean Blais Reportedly on Board: http://www.in-forum.com/articles/index.cfm?id=156674 Much more information will come next week. Presser is scheduled for Febrary 22nd.
  10. At this point I think Dean could care less. He just want to get behind the bench and be able to develop players.
  11. From what i've heard the suites at the proposed arena are being sold for $18,000 per season. I don't know what suites at the REA are going for now, but I thought a remember $25,000 being kicked around back when it opened. I'm sure that price has increased. Off course the suites at the REA at top notch and you get access to some great concerts and other events. I don't think this facility is going to compete with the Fargdome and proposed BB arena for smaller shows due to the fact that for 7 months a year this building will be full with all the HS, youth and now USHL games in the area. As a hockey parent in fargo I hope this all comes to fruitition. We've needed a facility like this for 20+ years.
  12. Oh what a difference a year or two makes. In the spring of 05 many sioux fans were hoping a praying that Kupchella was going to take the job at Marshall. Now there is a staunch defence for him?? What happened? Was the 180 on the name the difference to most? Here's the link to the May 2005 discussion. http://siouxsports.com/forums/index.php?sh...nalist&st=0
  13. You should be able to wear it on March 17th for the 2:07 faceoff.
  14. In my opinion you need to have your picture framed and hung around The Ralph to be considered "one of the best ever". Here is a list of All-American defensemen. *signifies 2nd team Dan Mckinnon- 1949-50*(Sioux Hall of Fame) McKinnon is one of UND's hockey pioneers. He was a standout member of the small band of UND (All American) Sioux who propelled UND into the big-time college hockey ranks with a 6-5 victory over national champion University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He lettered three years as a hockey player, 1947-50, and was a very good defensemen on teams coached by Don Norman and Hall of Famer Cliff (Fido) Purpur. McKinnon was named to the All America second team in 1950. He also played with three U.S. national teams: 1955 in Germany, and 1956 U.S. Olympic team in Cortina, Italy where he served as Assistant Captain, and in 1958 with the U.S. Nationals in Oslo, Norway. John Noah- 1950-1951 (Sioux Hall of Fame) A native of nearby Crookston, Minn., Noah was a super hockey defenseman and became the first UND hockey All American in 1951. He lettered four years in hockey. He was a member of the United States National hockey team in the world tournament in 1950 and performed very well. Noah long has been a promoter of amateur hockey and devoted countless hours to not only coaching, managing but also bankrolling amateur hockey in North Dakota. Bill Steenson- 1956-57, 1957-58, 1959-60 (Sioux Hall of Fame) Steenson, a native Moose Jaw, Sask., also was a super hockey defenseman. He is the only Sioux skater ever to win All America honors all three seasons, 1956-59, an honor duplicated by only a handful of collegiate stars. Steenson was rate, by veteran observers, for his size, the most able defenseman UND has ever had Don Ross- 1962-63 and 1964-65 Jeffy Lafond- 1966-67 Terry Abram- 1967-68 (Sioux Hall of Fame) A native of South St. Paul, Minn., Abram lettered in each of his three seasons with the UND hockey team en route to earning numerous honors. Abram was a key defenseman on the Fighting Sioux team that finished second in the nation in 1968. He earned first-team All-America honors and made the NCAA All-Tournament team that year, the one that he considered the highlight of his stay at UND. Abram went on to earn All-WCHA honors in his final two seasons and graduated in 1969 with a B.S. in Education. After graduation Abram was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks, but declined going to training and opted instead to enter the field of education and "give something to the students." John Marks- 1968-69 and 1969-70 (Sioux Hall of Fame) The name Marks is synonymous with UND hockey excellence, besides a former player, Marks, served very capably as an assistant hockey coach. He came to UND from Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he established himself as a premiere student-athlete. Marks lettered as an outstanding defenseman 1967-70 and his last two years was named to both the All American first teams and to the All Western Collegiate Hockey Association teams. After finishing college he played 12 years of pro hockey, including 10 years with the Chicago Black Hawks of the NHL and his first two years with the Black Hawks farm team in Dallas, Texas. He is considered one of UND's all-time great defensemen, playing on UND teams that won 71 of 116 games. Alan Hansleben- 1971-72 Howard Walker- 1979-80 Mark Chorney- 1980-81 (Sioux Hall of Fame) A 1981 All-American, Chorney, a native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, was an assistant captain for the 1980 national championship squad and served as captain for the 1981 team. He was named to the 1980 all-NCAA Tournament team and earned all-Western Collegiate Hockey Association honors for the 1980 and 1981 seasons. Chorney appeared in 153 games and recorded 24 goals and 94 assists as a defenseman. He played professionally with the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Los Angeles Kings James Patrick- 1982-83 (don't know if he's been named yet, but a sure fire Sioux Hall of Famer) Scott Sandelin- 1985-86* Ian Kidd- 1986-87 Russ Parent- 1989-90 Curtis Murphy- 1996-97* and 1997-98 Brad Williamson- 1998-99 Travis Roche- 2000-2001 Thats 17 All-American's making 19 1st teams and 3 2nd teams. I'll throw out another Calvin C. Marvin (Sioux Hall of Fame) Marvin is a native of Warroad, Minn., and was instrumental in persuading UND athletic administrators to begin playing major college hockey after World War II. He lettered three times as a great hockey defenseman 1947-50. Marvin was a member of the 14-man (All Americans) UND team that went to University of Michigan and beat the national championship team, 6-5, to mark UND entry into the big-time ranks. The same team also stopped Colorado College's 17-game winning streak. Not a top ten but a pretty good list of guys that stand ahead of Matt Greene. Don't get me wrong, Matt was a great stay at home d-man, but he doesn't deserve to be listed in that group. Now I'll apolagize for bringing facts to the table when I should have resorted to name calling an personal attacks. I'll now go back to my closed garage and find some more paint.
  15. Matt Greene was a great player, but come on. There have been quite a few Sioux defensemen in the last 60+ years and Matt Greene isn't on the top 10. Maybe during the past 10 years but not ever. Is Big Joe as good as Greene. Probably not, but I'm liking what I've seen.
  16. I noticed that too. Bina's play has been spectacular. On the topic of Lee, Has he been given the benefit of the doubt during HS? I'm only commenting on the State Tourney games his senior year. He didn't impress me the whole tourney. The way people talked, I thought he was going to be able to take over a game, and I didn't see it. IMO, Finley has been the Sioux's third best defenseman over the past two weeks. We'll see if he can sustain this level of play. This has been the time in past season's when our "big" d-men have figured it out. I.E. Smaby and Greene
  17. My opinion on Lee is that Hak should switch him and Radke. Lee obviously has some offensive skills and maybe getting his butt kicked in the corners and in front of the net will turn the light bulb on for him. Plus he can do less damage as a winger in our own zone. Maybe he needs a healthy scratch to wake him up. The things that Lee used to do well, good passing and solid positioning, have left him and he is a complete disaster right now. Against the gophers we can't have lee imitating a pylon, they are too damn good. I've personally been giving Lee the benefit of the doubt for three years now. I heard so much hype, and he has now consistently underacheived. Starting at the state championship game against Holy Angles and continuing through the WJC and 1 1/2 year sioux career I hear about this increadible talent, but I've yet to see a flash. I hope he figures it out, because he has all the physical tools to be a dominant player.
  18. "The University of North Dakota is firmly committed to promoting an environment that emphasizes respect for diversity. In accordance with this commitment, the UND community is dedicated to respecting the past and present of the American Indian." http://www.universityrelations.UND.edu/logoappeal/history.html I can't think of a better place to honor "Woody". Close to 12,000 people learned the history of a real american hero. Did anyone find it a little odd that his paper work for the congressional medal of honor was "lost" not once but twice?? I'd also like to give a big standing ovation to the student section, who showed nothing but class (as always) during the ceromony.
  19. I think that the urban plains area is on a full section of land. Plenty of room for this arena. Everything that LB #11 goes with what I heard. I heard $30 million not $39 and 4,000 not 4,900, but the location is correct. The devloper has offered to donate the land and a significant cash donation. I'm optimistic that the project will get done, it is long over due.
  20. Everyone is talking about no skill "enforcers", but has anyone had a chance to skate with them to see how skilled they actually are. I was luckey enough to play in an adult league tourney about 5 years ago when in walk Mike Peluso (not from Bismark, but the career goon). Somebody on our team knows somebody who knows Mike and asked him to play. Needless to say I was expecting a no skill goon, but I was very wrong. Mike had fantastic stick skills (with the puck ) and in a no check adult league game could dangle around guys like nobodies business. After the weekend I had a new found respect for the skill level that every NHL player has. I can't imagine how good the superstars are. I'm sure somebody will say that it was only adult league hockey and it was, but stick skills are stick skills and if you play long enough you know the guys who have them and the guys that don't (I don't).
  21. You should have tried growing up playing against him, and constantly being at the same summer camps and schools. Not only was/is he a highly skilled player that can make you look like a fool on the ice, but he makes sure you know all about it before, during and after the game. That's the reason he never won the Hobey when he probably was the best player his last two years.
  22. Chico is an ex-UMD goalie so I'm sure he has a soft spot for college hockey players. Chico used to come up to Moorhead for their Blueline summer clinic. He was quite a character from what I can remember.
  23. When is the game usually played? I know Sunday, but about what time? This will be my first year at the Final Five and if you'll have me I'd love to play. If you need more skaters I know a HS coach who's a sioux fan and a great skater and in shape who would play. Let me know.
  24. Wouldn't want to be a Bruin at practice this afternoon. "If you guys don't want to work during the game we'll work now! On the line!!!" -Herb Brooks, Miracle
