  1. http://www.in-forum.com/Opinion/articles/184357 The Herald today also has a lot of opinions on the coming name change.
  2. Did you notice that the first time they mention us, they call us the "University of SOUTH Dakota Fighting Sioux"?
  3. My point is that we keep talking about the history and the tradition of the Sioux name at UND, so let's examine some of our history. Granted, times have changed. I couldn't see a situation like this happening today; it would never be allowed to progress to the ugly climax it did. Let's get it changed and move on.
  4. Sorry, but I'm old enough to remember the incident.
  5. http://www.in-forum.com/Opinion/articles/184158 The King Kold incident was disgusting, to say the least
  6. Indian nations are autonomous, so they operate under their own jurisdictional decree. They don't need to tell us anything, outside of the fact that they resent us, UND, using their name.
  7. There is no way the NCAA goes along with no nickname. This makes if far to easy to revert back informally to the Sioux name, which is what the "no name" crowd wants. It's not going to happen. I know enough about legal interpretation to know we can't go there. I also agree that the name has to be something that is representative of the area and our history. Storms, Rage, Blizzard, etc, isn't going to do it. Cavalry is nothing more then an attempt to poke a stick in the eye of the Native American's and the NCAA. Nicknames don't need to be intimidating. Look at the Gophers and the Jackrabbits. Lack of an aggressive logo isn't causing them problems, no matter how poorly they play.
  8. The reason we can't simply drop the "Sioux" name and use nothing is that it is far to convenient to informally keep using Sioux. Sorry, but the NCAA won't go for it.
  9. I've been trying not to comment to much on this since the settlement to avoid the appearance of gloating. I'l even overlook the flaming I've taken for pushing for a new name. The one comment I'm going to make is lets get an acceptable new name and move on. What ever we pick, let's embrace it and completely stop using the "Sioux" name. As others have said, now is the best time to switch. New division, new conferences, new rivals. Bury the past and welcome the future.
  10. I see where the tribal leadership at both Standing Rock and Spirit Lake have already said their earlier positions won't change. Time to move on. Lets select a new name and get down to business. With all the latest distractions, does anyone even remember there is a football game today?
  11. I said a long time ago this would happen, and a million dollars later, it did. I just hope we don't insult the tribal leadership with some kind "incentive" to let us keep the name.
  12. This settlement is no good. I have no doubt that in the next three years someone from UND will find a way to hoodwink the Native American leaders into finding the name "acceptable". I'd put money on it. Let's face it, the name is racist and unacceptable in the modern age. Even if the Native Americans should decide to stand pat on their decision, it still leaves too many logos at the Ralph in place. Chang the name and let's move on.

What do you think I am, Ralph?

Just because we may get off the NCAA's "naughty list" doesn't mean our offensive name will condoned by them. If UND should win, and that is a big "if", it doesn't mean anything will change except that we will be using an offensive name in post season play. And, you can bet that the NCAA will appeal, costing us even more money.

I've been saying the same thing for months. Change it and move on. How much more obvious does it have to get? No one will play us, the lawsuit is costing us a fortune, and no, I still won't donate as long as the name remains.
  16. I heard on the news today that Kupchella has agreed to stay on the job until next June, to give the search committee more time.
  17. I just like to avoid negative publicity. This isn't helping, and Judge Jahnke is getting the lawsuit in the news again. Look how this is all drawing attention away from football games.
  18. The only comment I'm going to make is that this is every bit as damaging to UND public relations as the fight over keeping the name.

    UND v SUU

52-17 UND If we want to be national champs, we have to think big. Besides SUU isn't that good.
  20. Nope, I'm only disillusioned with with the money wasted on the logo fight.
  21. The one thing I foresee from both schools playing SUU is the score being run up. You can bet it will happen if either get the chance. The down side to this is, if we get control of the game early, it would be good to get some of the younger players some field time.
  22. So, what are the odds of San Diego going the scholie route? Looks like nobody else is possible due to the moratorium.
  23. The loser usually only pays court costs in frivolous lawsuits, but not in this case, since it has merit. So, you can forget the idea of NCAA picking up the tab after Janke rules in favor of UND, and UND won't get stuck with the bill after the Honorable Judge is overturned on appeal. As per the cost of removing said offensive logos, Ralph was warned many times the logo would someday have to go and he chose to ignore it. I'd say either UND or REA, Inc will have to eat the cost. No way this issue will disappear until we get a neutral logo. Sorry, but I'm a UND grad too.
  24. You are right, at least according to the way I understand it. First year we are still D2, then four more years of D1. The first year of eligibility would be 2012. As to conferences, no one has a crystal ball to see out that far. Something will open up, just no use getting excited out it until about 2011.
  25. Tell Grandpa to hang in there a few more years, I think he'll get to see us called the Flickertails again
