  1. He's sitting this year. That would count.
  2. Here's an interesting issue the NCAA faces with one of its major sponsors, Coca-Cola and their Vitamin Water, which is provided at NCAA sanctioned events. link And from their own site: link Cynical people might think this a bit hypocritical.
  3. Hockey East, Atlantic Hockey and WCHA all have ten now. ECAC and CCHA already have 12. No D-I Men's Conference has 8 currently. Twelve is not a bad number. We already play Bemidji, adding them to the conference schedule frees up two games in non-conference that we can play anyone we want who wants to play us too. Could add a Hockey East series or a competitive CCHA series. What's bad about that? I'd rather play Bemidji in conference that out of conference, which we have promised to do, so that won't change unless they come on board.
  4. That's fine, but they aren't going to ask you (or me). Yes, the WCHA has had many changes already. Michigan, Northern Michigan, Notre Dame - all former WCHA members. As to common sense for the WCHA, adding Bemidji with their new arena is going to happen I think. Now you need another team to keep the league balanced. Choices other than UNO are Air Force or Fairbanks. Given those, I would prefer UNO, but, again, I will get no say. As was said before, the only real negative would be Minnesota and Wisconsin leaving for a Big Ten League, but I don't see that happening, unless Notre Dame were to join the Big Ten for all sports. Then it becomes more plausable.
  5. They are sold. I may have more on other weekends. I will try to get as much notice as possible to Sioux fans. We have eight tickets in 115 and don't always use them all. Thanks to those who inquired. Go Sioux!
  6. It just caught my eye because I remember he was the MV Forward in the WJT when Toews led Canada to gold in Sweden, and I thought Jonathan would get it. Very sad story for a 19 year old phenom. He most certainly would have been a top 3 selection if the Russian League had a transfer agreement in place, maybe even #1 over Kane. link
  7. In other breaking news ... the Titanic has sunk.
  8. I think this is workable, as long as it is very limited. The danger is in all bar owners wanting to be on the smoking side, not the non-smoking, which is what would happen. It is apparent that bar owners feel that smokers are their best customers. Drink more, stay longer, return more often. I don't know this to be true, but I know bar owners who are convinced it is.
  9. As a health care practitioner (dentist), I could not agree more. Not only do the smokers cause BCBS rates to rise, I, as a non-smoker, get to help pay for it too. And, on another note, it baffles me to no end that we can enforce seat belt laws, but not have helmet laws on motorcycles enforceable. Why is that "freedom" different? And, by the way, I come down on the side of helmet laws, not revoking seat belt laws.
  10. "C" = Duncan "A" = Finley "A" = Watkins
  11. I guess that makes it similar to Washington DC, then. It is becoming more and more evident that jumping through all these hoops, just to have to potentially do it again at some future date is simply not worth it, even if we could succeed now. Time to move on. All this animosity being created over this by good people on both sides (and, yes, some not so good) is not good for the soul. Let's get rid of the anger and move on, and let's try and do it positively and with a good attitude. It won't be easy, but we can do it. If it takes someone saying they win and we lose, fine, I'll say it. The anti-nickname side wins, the Fighting Sioux nickname supporters lose. Let's move forward.
  12. I'm rooting for the Pens, but the Red Wings are so much more skilled overall, it's not even close. Outshot 55-28, I believe, last night. Red Wings are dominant. Pens will lose some players, but their AHL team is in the Calder finals, too, so they will reload with inexpensive role players and Goligoski will man the point for many years. They will be different next year, but not worse. Just the way the new NHL works.
  13. Was listening to NHL on XM last week and they just raved about him and how the Pens need to find room for him next year. Will probably allow them to let Orpik walk as a FA. Good for Alex. Always good when WCHA players make an impact. Isn't he a Grand Rapids kid, too?
  14. There is much talk here about the perceived/real troubles at Minnesota. We sometimes relish it a bit too much, they sometimes defend it a bit too much. That's what these rivalries are about. Would we feel the same about Mankato or Anchorage? I believe ... No. The rivalries developed over the years with Wisconsin, Denver and especially Minnesota are real and intense because they are worthy opponents, much as we are for them. In all competitive endeavors one needs worthy opponents to gain any real satisfaction from being successful against them. It makes for better games, better preparation leading up to those games (for coaches and players) and more satisfaction for success in those games as well as more disappointment for losses. So, though we have a healthy (unhealthy for some) dislike for those programs, it is exactly because they are worthy of that dislike that makes it worth while to have them as rivals. Without those intense rivalries, Sioux hockey (or Gopher hockey for Minnesota fans) would not be the same. It, quite simply, would not be as much fun. So we need to be thankful for Wisconsin, Denver and Minnesota's successes, because it fuels the competitive juices of our coaching staff and players to perform at their very best. And, in the end, that's what makes our love for college hockey (or any other sport) what it is. As for what is the pecking order for what is important. To me I rate them thusly: 1) NCAA Title 2) McNaughton Cup 3) Frozen Four berth 4) Broadmoor Trophy 5) NCAA Tournament berth Your mileage may vary. I hope everyone has a great summer! See you in October.
  15. As was already said, they did that once already. My guess is the knee injury to Chorney won't help pull them back to school, either. Shows how fragile an athletes career can be. Any shift, at any level can be your last. My guess is Oshie, Chorney and Finley are gone. I think Kozek will return, but it's not for sure by any means. Duncs is unique. If he leaves, he can go anywhere, but it is likely the AHL version of anywhere. If he stays, who's left for him to play with? His skills have been best used with playmakers around him. So, this may be his best chance to go. But, maybe he improves his value by showing he can elevate his game with a different subset of players around him, too. He's a great kid and I wish him and all the Sioux players the best if they move on. As for the coaches looking out for the school/program. They do their best job of that when they honestly assess when a player is ready to move on or has nothing left to prove at the college level. If they do that, those that do leave will be great recruiting tools for getting top notch future players. If they try to talk kids into staying when they are ready to move on, those players will eventually tell future top notch players to go somewhere else for the honest assessment they won't get here. We have been very fortunate that our coaches have always done their best to honestly tell players where they stand, and then let the players and their families make the final decision. It is why our program is so well respected by both NHL front offices and recruits alike.
  16. My stretch and reach came right from your post: ... such prestigious universities like Dartmouth and Stanford ... If Yale isn't "like" Dartmouth and Stanford, I don't know what school is. The difference is they never had a NA nickname or logo, really.
  17. Yes, please, can we be more like some of our "enlightened" fellow institutions of higher learning, like Yale? They would allow this as a Senior art project, but I'm sure they would never be the "Fighting Sioux" or "Indians". Thank goodness we now have a moral compass to follow. They are obviously fully into the 21st Century. Yale Daily News Star Trib Blog Be careful what you wish for your alma mater to become!
  18. We hash and rehash the same issues with new words. This has become such a volatile issue. It is not easily discussed without emotion becoming a major factor to those on both sides. Certainly, the NCAA stance is, at its core, conflicted. It either is or is not
  19. Correct, did mine online today.
  20. The more unfortunate part of this story isn't that it happened, which is bad enough, but the fact that UND dragged it's collective feet for so long to address this. This should have been dealt with, strongly, and even harshly for those involved in a quick and forceful manner, with due process, of course. The reality here is that UND's current response coincides with the crimes being made public, not, it appears, with UND's efforts to resolve this issue. That reflects poorly on the school, it's students, the administration and alumni. There is no way to sugar coat this. Unfortunately, comparing this to the logo issue or Ralph Engelstad, while unfair, is to be expected, and is not, to many people, way off base. These kinds of comparisons will continue. As one who enjoyed his time at UND and is and always will be a supporter of my Alma Mater and the Fighting Sioux nickname, it is time to put this to rest and move on. It is simply no longer worth the fight. The negatives clearly outweigh the positives at this point.
  21. You're "New Era of Hockey Knowledge" is showing. But, you are correct, others made non-Sioux references before you, so I apologize for being harsh. Now, go work on your English. Concentrate on verb conjugation first.
