Not just that. It is rare for any team to go through the season without dropping a game or games to teams that do not have much chance on paper. Hockey is not unique in that, but with the average game's score being pretty low in any case, an off night, some pipes and bounces, and a hot goalie, anything can (and does) happen on any given night, even if the players are not looking past the opponent. This team seems pretty good in that area. In addition to more talent, the leadership of this group must be better.

First rounders usually perform at a pretty high level as freshmen, and they rarely stay around longer that soph. But we are hardly ever talking about more than two players. There has to be enough speed and skill in the rest of the roster, something we have lacked the last couple of years, but that is no secret.

Grateful for what Doug Woog brought to college hockey. He understood how to do everything you can to beat the opponent but to do so with dignity and humor. Hats off.

People's analytical abilities disappear when they are angry or depressed about something, which is what all fan bases experience during down years. Personal disappointment turns into criticism of others. We can get by with that as fans.

I agree, but the full-on effort thing is a little complicated. I think most of our boys give complete effort under Berry as they did for Hak and Deano. But a player has to have confidence in his split-second choices in order to commit to them quickly and with speed. Some players work their hardest but are a little tentative due to lower on-ice intelligence, lack of experience, more cautious nature, or just lower skill level. I think Stecher has a combination of high energy and high on-ice intelligence that allows him to move aggressively and effectively. Not all players have that, and not all teams have that on their rosters. We fans are quick to conclude when they lose that it is from lack of effort. But even when they seem to be chasing too much or sitting back, that can be attributed to other shortcomings, and it's sometimes unfair for us to say the players are lazy or don't care enough. You combine talent and confidence in a player or on a team and they will usually look like they are outworking the other team. Or maybe not.
