I think we should never build an "if it's true" statement on top of rumor. That's exactly how rumor does its harm. None of us is so desperate we need to pay any attention to rumor and hearsay.
With most charitable (501C3) organizations, testamentary gifts are a significant part of the donation pool. Don't know how that works with athletic programs in public universities.
