  1. A lot depends on ranking criteria, but yes I would put Commodore in that Top Four to wear #8. His presence kept UND's small and speedy guys from taking cheap shots (Alex Brooks from Wisconsin paid the biggest price/damage in that regard!), and his ability to play a strong and keep-it-simple game in his own zone was key to UND success and got him many years in the NHL. He also played 3 years at UND, one more than either Tippett or Schmaltz. And he won an NCAA title (as did Smail, Tippett, Hoogsteen and Schmaltz).
  2. Back when Mickey Krampotich wore #8 (83-87), he talked about living up to the reputation of #8 - the last 2 jersey wearers, Dave Tippett and Doug Smail had both made it to the NHL AND been major contributors at UND. He even went back to the '60's when Merrifield and Kell wore it. So yeah, I would have put Doug Smail on my Mount Rushmore of jersey wearers for #8.
  3. Scheffler has also been impressive. Almost there win a win over the world #1, Jon Rahm. He is so calm.
  4. Yeah its hard to believe he's only 32.
  5. Shocker is that he only got 13 votes ... some people just not paying attention.
  6. I liked the goal review change , and I like this change. both should have happened earlier, for competition integrity. But selfishly I like the new schedule which should allow watching all the games on TV.
  7. Kudos. Well done!

    UND @ ISU

I enjoyed the postgame interview with Coach, for several reasons. After listing several things his guys could do better, which is always good to hear after a win, he went on to note how many more points we could have had, and how fewer they should have had (which has some truth to it too) and realizing he was sounding too dismissive of the opponents and host for the day, closed by noting "they have scholarships too".
  9. Less of a coup after the WCHA ended. Presumably this is for women's hockey?
  10. Using a survey, with no criteria explained, seems far too shallow. And given the voters are ranking all the hockey in North America, makes it seem more like a ranking of the last couple NCAA tournament results than anything with real substance. I'll take a stab at something objective ... NHL players in 2020-2021, from that school, who spent 2-4 years there (really how much development happens in one year...), AND excluding draft choices from rounds 1-3 (they were going to play pro anyway) ... I thought about counting just Free Agents but that penalizes schools with a reputation for strong development. (Data extracted from collegehockeyinc.com) Survey #1 UMass 7 Survey #2 UMD 9 Survey #3 UND 11 Survey #4 Michigan 7 Survey #5 BU 2 Unranked: Northeastern 8 St Cloud, Minnesota 7 Denver, Notre Dame, Providence, Harvard 6 BC, Miami, Ohio State 5 My $.02
  11. I would be happy to bump my gifts to an important project. I think, that in seeking to expand the circle of givers, and/or increase gifts from those who are already giving, it would be very helpful to understand the benefits to UND football (and / or other UND sports if so), and how that helps our athletes development, safety, and winning percentages. Connect the dots, as it were. Thanks!
  12. Yup!
  13. I had access to streaming, and found watching their live streams - usually coming from a global / international feed - to be very good. Limited commercial interruptions, and LIVE sports. Plus a true global perspective that doesn't dumb it down like NBC primetime does. * Several nations won their first medal, and others won their first gold. The global commenters captured the historic significance of those very well. If I watched prime time coverage, it was for the same reason I might watch SportsCenter. (Not to turn this thread into another UND vs NDSU piffing match, but it would be nice if they got off their butts and sponsored women's wrestling. Kudos to Minot State for being the first school in ND to do so.) Also, any sport sounds cooler with an Aussie accent.
  14. Indeed. If the IOC wants to bring India (and that region) into the Games, it should add cricket. (Which is the most popular sport on the globe that's not part of the Olympic program.) Now if they could invent a form of cricket match that could be played in 60 minutes ... it worked for Rugby. Rugby 7's is an excellent spectator sport. update:Cricket bids for LA 2028
  15. India wins first track and field gold, ever, in men's javelin If there's a sleeping giant in the world of Olympic sport, perhaps they are awakening.
  16. I continue to be amazed at the skill of the Skeet shooters. Four seconds after sunrise, these guys have bagged their limit and heading home.
  17. Seems like they favored some familiar Hakstol recruiting traits: * Building from the defense out ... Their D corps is pretty darn good. Giordano, Larsson ... even Soucy who was easy to hate when at UMD. All very solid. * Two way forwards. * Character guys, who were Captains (1 at the NHL level) and others in Juniors or college. * Late bloomers, because you can get those guys for an affordable price. I liked a lot of those picks ... perhaps the non-selection of Stecher was a way to avoid the appearance of favoring ex-UND players (which was a criticism at Philly). Dunn and Gourde were picks that I like among the scheme of guys that haven't had a chance to play a starring role. The draft on Friday - Saturday will fill in the blanks. They may get that #1 or #2 center in the draft.
  18. The more I think about the RMU situation, I think it’s a desperate high pressure fundraising ploy. From a university President who seems not to care about the turmoil he created. cynical viewpoint I know.
  19. That IS a fun game to play. A large base of alumni with a few fanatical about success will now have the chance to buy trophies (much like Big Money buying Premier League soccer titles). I will go with where the money is: USC, UNLV, Miami (FL), U-Texas. Fanaticism is harder to predict: Let's just say the entire SEC. PS which hockey programs might have a large base of alumni with a few fanatical about success?
  20. TLDR: Hakstol could screw Philadelphia by not helping them out of their salary cap problems. Fabulous clickbait, awful just really dreadful writing and (lack of) clear thinking.

  22. I'd have been better just doing a team of all the former UND players.
  23. I'm interested to see if https://fightinghawks.com/news/2021/5/14/mens-hockey-twelve-und-alums-to-compete-for-lord-stanleys-cup.aspx updates that graphic.
