1. Since so many here seem to feel like the current Sioux tribes have changed greatly since the days of the historic Sioux tribes, maybe we should look at the next three years in a completly different way. The Sioux tribes now have three years to earn UND's honor again! The current Sioux tribes haven't been so honorable to UND. They haven't supported our school in this fight. UND spent $1M to continue to honor them. That money could've been spent elsewhere had the Sioux tribes given the support we needed right when the NCAA put UND on the list. If the Sioux don't make an effort now to regain our honor and respect, UND should decide not to keep the name. Seriously. It should be an honor for anyone to have a school named after them. I have said plenty of times that donors give tons of money to universities to get their names on buildings and UND gave this honor to Sioux tribes for free. Let's see if the current Sioux tribes earn the right to have UND continue to honor them. Anyone else have any thoughts about this?
2. It is too bad that back in the 30's the UND administrators that picked the name weren't able to look into a crystal ball to see how America would become so PC about everything.
3. The answers so far haven't been about how YOU personally want to honor the Sioux. Since the name debate has been going strong for as long as I can remember, I guess I am trying to understand why we fans have fought so hard to keep it over the years. Besides tradition, why do we care so much? Native American history hasn't been something I have really spent much time thinking about. It isn't the reason I chant, Let's Go Sioux or why I have sioux hats, shirts, jerseys, stickers on my car windows, Sioux license plate frames on my car, etc... The Sioux tribe is not why I brag up our hockey team to my friends in Illinois and talk about the Sioux in many different situations. It is because our hockey team usually rocks. For me personally, I haven't ever really thought much about the historic Sioux tribes either. Maybe there are Sioux fans that are much different than me but I would think not? It seems that people in GF tend to make sterotypical comments about Native Americans more than comments about all of the great stuff they do. I am not saying people in GF are racist but I think people make more negative comments than positive. What great stuff do the Sioux tribes do that people in GF appreciate? Part of the problem with all of this honor and respect is also that there are still Sioux tribes in existence that have been able to possibly tarnish the respect we originally felt towards the Sioux? It seems the honor we talk about is about the historic Sioux and not current. This makes the name debate more complicated.
4. I bet if the majority of people on this board were being truthful, most would admit to not having very much honor and respect for Native Americans. There are so many comments on this board that are basically "we" vs. "them" statements, etc... I am guessing I may have made some myself? I am pretty sure that one of the reasons people want to keep the name is because they don't want the Native Americans to win this 30 year school name fight that UND has had with them. When I was living in Grand Forks I heard plenty of comments about what people really thought of Native Americans, etc... and none of them pointed to honor and respect. I have been a Sioux fan my entire life but really a fan of the hockey team which is called the Sioux. I will always be a fan of the hockey team and other athletics at UND no matter what the name is because UND is the school I attended and that will never change. It will suck if we aren't the Sioux any longer but that really is only because it is all I have ever known. So, be honest, what do you truthfully honor and respect about the Sioux and Native Americans? If UND loses the Sioux name, what will you do then to show your honor and respect to the Sioux tribes? How will you fill the void of not being able to honor and respect the Sioux at UND events any longer? I am asking this because I am really curious about why people really want to keep the name. I am of the belief that it is only because of tradition and nothing else. It has nothing to do with us fans wanting to honor and respect the Sioux tribes.
5. How about the: UND Badlands? UND Moose? UND Meadowlarks? UND Binge Drinkers that eat Red Pepper?
6. This entire situation is pathetic. I can't wait to see what issue the NCAA goes after next! What is most upsetting for me in this whole sitaution is that we were bullied by a monopolistic organization. UND is a small school and didn't have the resources to fight the way we all would've liked UND to fight the NCAA! We are one of 1250 that are lining the pockets of the NCAA. Kinda like the Duke Lacrosse players that were accused of rape. If they didn't have the money to pay for the great lawyers they had they probably would've been falsely convicted but they were able to get the best and they got off. If we were FSU or another one of the big colleges with more alum with deep pockets we would've had a much bigger chunk of cash to spend to go after the NCAA and the outcome may have been different.
7. It is sad that the NCAA decided they should control schools and all 18 schools let them. This settlement means we will probably need to go to the NCAA to make sure they are okay without whatever logo and mascot we choose in the future. I don't understand how such an obvious monopoly and bully is able to be in existence in the U.S. It is too bad the 18 schools that were put on this social engineering list didn't pull together and sue the NCAA as a single entity.
8. If we can't be Indians, let's be cowboys! I am guessing a larger percentage of the UND population can relate more to the cowboys than Indians anyway unless something has changed since I was at UND? I bet cowboys would be honored and could give a crap if we have a team named after them. I hope we go with North Dakota Rough Riders! The women's sports teams might not like being called Rough Riders though. They might get taunted by opposing teams with offensive gestures? Based on some of the comments Sioux-cia and Hockey mom make to each other on this board, it seems they would probably come up with some interesting new Rough Rider cheers?
9. So these guys get to decide what our school name is going to be? Ron His Horse is Thunder David Gipp Do we really want them to be in charge of deciding the future of our school's name and logo? I don't know for sure but I don't think they are even UND Alum? If you are bored and want to see an interesting example of how political correctness has changed our culture take a look at this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kokogiak/sets/1425737/show/ Notice how all of the Native American images were removed from the new version of the book along with many other things. The new version is on the right side.
10. Since it seems the lawyers have wussed out on fighting the NCAA, it may be time to get a name that we DON"T NEED TO GET APPROVAL to use. It is getting old having UND bending over backwards all the time to kiss butt without any support from the tribes. If the Sioux aren't honored byUND using their name, then why do we want to honor them? It is ridiculous that a University has to kiss butt to keep a school name. Seriously, this doesn't even really seem to be in the spirit of us being the Fighting Sioux. It is funny that Donors pay the university money to have their names put on buildings at UND but the Sioux tribes don't want their names put on for free! I have been a Fighting Sioux fan all my life but I don't want the cheer to be "Hear Come Your Butt Kissing Fighting Sioux"! I don't think that has a very good ring to it. I might take this back if the tribes change their minds and find honor now that they have some control over the future of their name being used by UND but lets not be butt kissers. Everything I just said in that sentence sounds weak. Maybe the time has come to move on....
11. If you are bored and want to hear Toews speak I noticed that he is one of two featured pop-ups when you mouse over the For Season Tickets box at http://blackhawks.nhl.com/index.html. He isn't much of an actor as he seemed to have a hard time reading his cue cards! :-) If Jack Skille or Patrick Cane show up when you mouse over, hit the refresh button and mouse over it again and Toews will show up.
12. I can't believe nobody has suggested a BLACK OUT! I think that would be cool! Represents all the pucks we will be throwing at the opposition! I vote Black Out even though I don't live in GF.....

another link for you reading pleasure: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/hocke...i-sportstop-hed this might make me actually want to go to a Hawks game this year. I have only been to a couple games in the past 10 years. It would be great to see a Devils - Hawks game.
14. Anyone else notice the two other former Sioux mentioned in this article: James Patrick and Gord Sherven? Team Canada has only done this two other times which means three of the only five players in Team Canada history to be pulled up like Toews were Fighting Sioux! Says a lot about the caliber of players we have had over the years.
15. I did a search before I posted. I didn't think I could be the first one to see this from SiouxSports. Hopefully those that haven't seen it will get there chance now! It is good stuff.
16. Check out this funny video. It brings together Canada and America's favorite pastimes! Maybe this is the sport we need to bridge the gap while we wait for the next Sioux hockey season to begin??? :-) http://youtube.com/watch?v=hdf4GeT4ELA
17. Rumor in the Chicago area is that after his Frozen Four performance, TheTriouxper has been contacted by 6 or 7 other Wing restaurants besides BWW including The Blue Moose and Hooters! Hooters is taking a very serious run at him because of his incredible man boobs! P.S. I have never met or seen the Triouxper so I hope my joke is not offensive!
18. Actually, maybe it was 7 teams, I am not sure exactly! I am glad I posted this thread now because everyone seems to be having fun with it! We need some fun to recover from last week!
19. Rumor has it Ryan Duncan was approached by 6 teams after winning the Hobey?
20. Yeah, I guess quitting is too harsh. Misplayed would be more accurate.
21. The second goal happend quick after Lammy let out the rebound but as Melrose said, Lee and Chorney(?), played the puck and not the man and that resulted in the goal. Even though it happened quickly, there was no reason that Bertram? from BC was able to put that rebound in the net with two Sioux D standing right there. Lammy was so close to covering that puck up too. He was a split second late on getting his glove over it. If the defense were doing their job though he shouldn't have had to take care of the save and rebound on that one. All of this doesn't really matter because if the Sioux would've been on their game 100% we would've been in a better position to win this game without all of these little things mattering much. We were just outplayed on that one day. It would've been fun to see what the results of a best of 3 between these teams would've been. It is too bad that only the first round of the playoffs is best of 3. It sure would be fun if every round was best of 3 or 5 or something like that. I think that would result in an undisputable champ in the end. The first game would allow the teams to adjust to refs from a different league and get down to busiiness by game 2. MSU deserved to win and be crowned champs but it sure would make things interesting if the NCAA changed the format to be more like the NHL playoffs.
22. I only moved to the Chicago area in 97 so I have only had about 10 years of Cubs and Bears defeat conditioning. I wasn't really much of a fan of Chicago area teams until I moved to the area. Maybe when Toews signs with the Hawks I may have to check out some games but they have been a lost cause the entire time I have been here plus, pro hockey just doesn't compare to college. I did grow up in GF and was pretty well conditioned by the Vikings losing all the time but I guess I have forgot about all the pain they caused when I started to like teams in the Chicago area that are continuing the pain! I don't think the we quit except for the rebound on #2 and the first open net goal. I still don't know what happened on that open netter since I was at the game and was paying attention to the puck and the BC player tapping it in. The video replays didn't show much of what happened either. I guess we thought it was going to be icing or go in the net as others have said. Whatever the case, the BC player did not quit on the play but our guys did for whatever reason. Who knows what would've happened if that puck would've been kept out? I hope on the off-season, Lammy works on his flopping. He played a great game but I think he may have been able to be even better if he wouldn't have went for such a big save on Goal #2 and #3. Goal #2 was more the result of Lee standing there watching the rebound and the BC player take the puck and shoot it in the net but, in my opinion as a goalie, Lammy didn't really need to make such a dramatic save on that play to start. Same goes with #3 but not nearly as much. He got a piece of that. He needed a Lerg vs. Boyle save on that play. I can't imagine what that would've done to the momentum if he would've made a huge glove save on #3. The Play of the Day save was fun to watch but I couldn't believe how early he had committed himself on that play. He was down the minute the player had it on his stick. I liked the Hasek acrobatics to make the save but that was nearly another example of how his floppiness can be dangerous. Man, I need to go and have a beer or something and get over this game! Me still sad the Sioux lost!
23. He is a hockey player and a goalie! How else is he going to relieve some of that pressure? What better way than to get drunk and beat up some cops! Maybe cops/security guards remind Eddy of WCHA refs?

I heard a rumor today that Toews wants to finish college? Anyone else hear this? I heard it from my dad who lives in GF. He said there have been rumors Oshie and Toews are staying put? I don't want to get excited. It sure would be fun if we could have the foundation of one of our teams stay together more than two years. Does anyone else on here who is out in the real world now think players should think twice about leaving college? This is a serious question and I think Marc Chorney makes a great point. It would be nice if pro teams actually thought more about the players lives rather than their bottom line. I guess players are doing the same when they decide to leave early but it would be a nice change if they actually let the players know how difficult it will be for them to actually go back and finish school if something changes with there hockey careers in the pros. Maybe these guys don't really care about their college years but they were some of the best times of my life. Going to work, playing pro, ASAP seems kinda crappy to me but I probably would think otherwise if I had $1M offered to me??? These guys can never get this time of their lives back. I don't get why they all think they need to grow up so quick? Maybe I am just being a meathead in thinking this way since I loved playing hockey more than anything when I was playing all the time.
25. While I was at the game I thought that BC seemed like the better team but when I watched the game again it seemed much more evenly matched then I realized. If the Sioux didn't lose their discipline in the final 5 minutes I think there would've been a different outcome. The Finley and Porter penalties killed us and were not necessary. From the replays I still don't know what happened with the first open netter. It was a bit embarassing that we allowed an open net goal like that with a 6 on 4 advantage. Another breakdown of discipline at a key time in the game. It is too bad. We had such an awesome team this year. They were such a fun team to cheer for once they figured things out the second half. Something about the second half made it one of the more exciting Sioux teams to watch. After the Cubs season last year and the Bears letdown in the Super Bowl I am getting too conditioned for defeat! Hopefully we will get a nice surprise this time next year in Denver!!!!!!!
