  1. Sioux are ranked fourth in pre-season poll. http://www.fightingsioux.com/sports/footba...RELEASE_ID=3948
  2. FSU prepares for NCAA ruling. http://www.pensacolanewsjournal.com/sports...FD10C01C4.shtml
  3. I can understand how Redskins can be deemed inappropriate, but I don't understand how the use of the name Sioux is wrong. Isn't the name Dakota also a native american word? Are we supposed to also change the name of the state? How about all of the other states that have native american names? http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0854966.html I know that some of the other schools on the list use a mascot, which UND doesn't. Is the mascot the main crux of the controversy?
  4. Another article on Kupchella. http://www.grandforks.com/mld/grandforks/11730326.htm
  5. I rarely find read a post that I laugh so hard my eyes start watering, but yours managed to do that PCM. I think that I would have to agree with Sicatoka that the writing is on the wall. Even with Kupchella in the running for the position, someone at UND is looking for his repacement now. But with a statement like he made regarding "most of what I will be able to accomplish, I have accomplised", I would think that would signal his departure, either on his own or being pushed out.
  6. Is there anyone in the GF school system who would be a candidate for this job? <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
  7. Not trying to change the subject back, but just saw the attached link on GFH website regarding BRAC hearing in GF. http://www.grandforks.com/mld/grandforks/11687036.htm
  8. Pensacola is taking a hit at NAS, but Whiting, Saufley and Corry were untouched and it appears as though Eglin will keep growing. The hit Pensacola took in a previous realignment, when NADEP was shut down, was far worse. The number of people moving in to re-build Pensacola is causing part of housing shortage. Housing has gone up about 25% since Ivan. Have you seen the devastation at P'cola Beach or NAS? It's going to take years to rebuild. I can't see the loss of the jobs at NAS impacting the overall housing shortages to any great degree.
  9. I was thinking the same thing. Try and promote the assets that you have, instead of convincing someone that your deficiencies aren't so bad. I agree that the tankers are gone soon regardless. In the short term this is going to hurt GF. The loss of people is going to cause the housing values to fall, some small businesses will close and the 2010 census is going to look bad. Tough on a small city trying to recover from a devastating flood. The long term, 10-15 years out, this will be positive. More high tech jobs. I believe that UND Aerospace can be helped by the UAV's moving in. It could be a great symbiotic relationship.
  10. I found a blurb along the same lines from last October. It appears that this has been in the works for some time. http://www.access5.aero/site_content/news/...rderPatrol.html
  11. I agree. There are too many unanswered questions in all of this.
  12. By the word "bad" I meant the loss of a ton of jobs by the looks of it. Obviously I'm pleased that the base will remain open. Hopefully their will be a new mission to add some jobs back.
  13. Thanks for the links. Hopefully the "realigned" isn't as bad as it looks in the Forum.
  14. I was at the game with tnt in 1977.
  15. I'm sure that I would find that I have a lot of long lost relatives.
  16. Weird but true, I had a premonition yesterday morning that Buning would be hired and that it would happen yesterday. I also have a premonition that I will win th Florida lottery tomorrow.
  17. You may be right about it being pointless insofar as the NCAA. The point that I was trying to make was about public perception. NDSU is attempting to garner national attention for their football. My point is that no one cares who plays DI-AA. They care about DI-A. Like I said it is a silly argument.
  18. The truth is that when you read a publication such as the World Almanac they don't list the winner of DI-AA championship game as the national champion for football. The team that they list is a DI-A team, such as Florida, USC, LSU .... There is no mention of the DI-AA championship game or a list of past DI-AA champions. There is a list of past college hockey champions and North Dakota is in there seven times. I reference the World Almanac because I happen to have one in my house and it comes in handy for silly arguments like this. I live in the south and you could ask most folks to list 5 DI-AA teams and they couldn't do it. When you talk about college football down here it is all about DI-A football. Before you ask the question about how many know anything about college hockey, I will say very few. That being said, hockey as a whole is gaining popularity in the south, mostly due to the ECHL.
  19. I'm not trying to defend Glas, but his overall winning percentage is comparable to Gunther's. Glas 64% Gunther 65% The real difference is the conference winning percentage, which is what most of us seem to focus on, since it has been 10 years since UND won the NCC. NCC percentages: Glas 56.5% Gunther 65%
  20. I just read recently that Glas is 10 wins behind Gunther. I think that it would mean alot to him to go out as the all time winningest coach at UND. That being said he may step down on his own after this year with that title.
  21. Is there any new progress on the new hotel(s) coming to GF? I heard that the bids had been let for the Canad Inn project. Have they started construction? I also remember hearing about the possibility of another hotel going up near REA. Did that ever materialize?

I don't think that USD would have enough of a fan base for hockey. South Dakota is not as into hockey as ND and Minn. Omaha does well, because it is a larger metro. I know that Vermillion isn't that far from Sioux Falls, but doesn't SF already have minor league hockey. That being said I think you are right with the money issues at USD it may be a while if they start hockey, if ever.

Actually they are only IAA in football and everything else is Division I, but I do agree with your overall statement.
  24. I agree that going Division I without a conference plan would not be financially wise, nor would it be beneficial for the student athlete to have no conference championships to play for. I have read on other boards about the geography really hurting the upper midwest insofar as conference affiliation. I think that UND is prudent in continuning to update facilities for a long term goal of Division I when the timing is right.
  25. It was a wonderful ride and was great to be able to see the team on TV. Don't get to see them very often. Congratulations to the guys on a great season.
