  1. ooh boy Wpos did I get you in trouble here. Well early bird gets the worm I guess. It was your idea though. I will say though that more boyz over there took it.... hook, line, & sinker
  2. You asked for reasons to keep the name. 1. The name change won't mean a thing . The name doesn't hold native people back and hold them as second class. Reservations do that. The name is not even a piece of sand in the mountain of so called racism. So, if your argument is that once all the names are changed, we'll be able to respect ourselves more and the citizens of the US/World will respect us in a greater way, you're kidding yourself. 2. The name is actually a positive for native peoples if you look closer at the issue. You state that other people in the world are not held up for scrutiny/reflection as the Native Americans. Remember that people around the world do not market their culture philosophically. (Ok, we won't discuss missionaries because this message board or topics do not need the baggage.) If anything, people around the world market their culture and heritage at face value. You can argue that there are many forms of this, both the monetary and historical aspects at the forefront. Whatever the reason they do it for positive and genuine reasons. My point is that the State of North Dakota and other states with native heritage celebrate that heritage. Look at our teachings for our youth or even our museums. If you're a cynic you can blast away at the intentions but I feel they are real. What have native peoples done to help others understand their culture? If you don't feel as if you need to, you are sorely mistaken. Cultures that do not defend themselves (physically or theoretically) do not last. 3. There are people that take pride in your name that are not Sioux. You may be ethnocentric enough to believe that only the Sioux can feel pride in your name but you are wrong. Your ancestors were treated in a way of the times. History when looked at in retrospect is always easy to be judged harshly. Remember that far greater travesties have become of man than the native people of America. This is not my point however. I am a full blooded North Dakotan. I've been to every county in the state. I grew up going to small towns and other areas for hunting purposes. What I learned was how great and how diverse of a state we have. I consider the history of the state and the land itself as part of who I am. Both ideas, ancestry/tradition and mother earth, are tenants of the Native American, no? You are wrong to deny people the chance to celebrate your heritage as part of theirs. It is not trivial to have the institution named after your people. It only reminds those who feel as I do what your people have contributed to their lives. Don
  3. Actually, not to spoil anyone's great times here, but I think we should hold off on the signs about Hirsch. There are much funnier and more poignant signs to be made. Trust me, the 800# gorilla UMn hockey moms will come at you like they're Hulk Hogan and you're the Ultimate Warrior. I know it happened to me. I feel as if the situation is volatile. Yes we could make signs and think of a hundred great things to say, but... Since we get no respect in the way of a formal reason for Tyler's actions, any signs would be premature and show a lack ofclass in the eyes of the public and they in turn would give us no respect. This is something I for one don't want reflected on UND. My real opinion on the matter follows this but I will still make no signs about him. I think that Tyler had severe frustration and acted out. You can base it out of 'psyche' problems, religious reasons, or arrogance. We've been given little if any clue as to what it really was. Therefore, if it is any of the three reasons I've mentioned, Tyler shouldn't be able to play the rest of the season and here's why. 1. 'psyche' problems - It takes longer than a couple of weeks to get through something like this. In addition, someone close to me once went through a breakdown and one of the first things they need to do is lessen the stress generators. Obviously, hockey is one of them for Tyler. 2. religious reasons - This boy is what 18? He's in the top eschelon of hockey players in the nation. You don't get there overnight. This is something that should've been worked out by now. If not, why do the ethics/morals/convictions change in two weeks so Lucia can allow him to play? or his family for that matter. 3. arrogance - I think most of us would agree that this type of personality can be beneficial in hockey some times. It produces drive, determination, conviction , and a multitude of other positive results. Arrogance on a team however is something else. If arrogance caused the event, disrespect was not only shown to his teamates but his fans as well. If the event was in fact caused by this and was an error in judgement, all can be forgiven. Actually, we need to forgive this act and look for Tyler to deal with his demons. But, to put yourself above others and assume that anyplace is your forum for personal expression, you're fooling yourself. I won't make signs about him and I'm sure everyone can come up with something better.
  4. I posted this a while ago on USCHO: The WCHA is the best this year and most likely of all time. These stats reflect current conference affiliation so fire at will. I haven't included AH or CHA for obvious reasons. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP APPEARANCES: All-time; WCHA=49 HEA=25 CCHA=22 ECAC=17 Last 25 years; WCHA=20 HEA=16 CCHA=11 ECAC=5 Last 10 years; WCHA=7 HEA=12 CCHA=3 ECAC=0 CONFERENCE WINNING PERCENTAGES: All-time; WCHA=57% HEA=32% CCHA=73% ECAC=29% Last 25 years; WCHA=60% HEA=25% CCHA=73% ECAC=40% Last 10 years; WCHA=71% HEA=25% CCHA=100% ECAC= N/A So... Are all time stats more important or current? The CCHA has the best winning percentage but the least appearances and championships of the big three. (Put UMich back in the WCHA where most of their NC's came from and the numbers rise for the WCHA) HEA has the most appearances in last 10 years so one would think the table would be leaning towards the East. But... they also can't convert in the big game. Overall, everything West of the Appalachins is where the big bang comes from, as far as NC's are concerned. Arguements could be made that the NHL has looked upon the East as a better recruiting ground over the long run, so who knows. The East could've lost a lot of players that would've helped. Hockey's also been around the East for a bit longer than the west. I'm biased towards the West as the Best, but you decide.
  5. THANK YOU MR. MILLER! That was by far the most enlightening piece of literature I've read today. By far the best recap of the season. It's nice to hear some levity through your typed words. Sounds like the Fighting Sioux are focused and even better yet, know who they are. There are some true comic gems in there from MG. The two favorite though, "I don't even know who that guy is." and "I'm a goal scorer" Matt seems like a great guy. I'll never get over reading on the 'captains page' of the WCHA FF program about his 'favorites'. For those who may not have seen this, these are Matt's responses: (disclaimer is that all of the other 9 captains had pretty normal serious answers) Here goes; Favorite all-time movie: Captain Ron Favorite all-time TV show: Miami Vice Favorite Actor: Gary Busey Ultimate meal: hot dogs and mustard and the winner is... Ultimate vacation destination: Italian Moon buffet line
  6. Does anyone know how this went today? "The North Dakota Select Starz hockey team will compete today in the USA Hockey National championships in Westchester, Pa. The team, which consists of players from North and South Dakota ranging in age from 14 to 15, will compete in the National Tier II level. Team members are: Patrick Arnason of Grand Forks; Grant Kovacs of Dickinson; Tyler Groth, Derek Holt, Josh Huguelet and Spencer Wolf of Fargo; Grant Narveson and Kayla Berg of Fargo; David Burdick of West Fargo; Chad Demers, Alex Gaustad, Ryan Mohagen, Ryan Hills, Adam Schaefer and Billy Peterson of Grafton; Joery Heit of Devils Lake; Tyler Vold of Park River and Terry Portra of Sioux Falls, S.D." Thanks

    Charter

Actually, I'm not even sure why everyone on this board thinks the Alumni Assoc. is overcharging. Consider for a moment that I've done just as much looking into finding something other than the charter to 'get er done'. If you want to see the afternoon game you almost have to leave on wed. Ok so there are a couple of 7am-10am flights so you'd make the game, that you won't get on cuz their booked now, but I digress. Consider two adults: Flight $450 per, $900 total (if you don't want to drive somewhere to get to a flight) Hotel $300 for three nights Tickets $300 for two packages (good luck getting the same quality seats for less or even the same amount on ebay) Let's say that's roughly $1200 for two if you think you could do better and $1500 if we go by my estimates. (for the record I had my trip pretty much all aligned at just under $1600 2flights/4nights/2tics then chose to do the charter) Most everyone here is denigrating the AA for gouging when in all fairness it's a good deal. The Maine trip package last fall was $800 for two games, three nights lodging and a couple of token bus trips. This one with tickets is $843 for the Frozen Four. Oh, and I don't work with Mark or Jeff so don't go there.
  8. Careful. Careful. Careful. I'd be careful about any signs about Hirsch. You might have a 800 lb. UMn gorilla hockey mom come down and acoste you. Just a warning though. I think this one was a great sign at the WCHA FF, IMO; MOST DRAMATIC goal of tourney: HIRSCH'S empty netter.
  9. ADD CVCL + 7 others incl. 3 or 4 who are certifiably fanatics we're all staying at the Crown Plaza
  10. This will not be a close game. Somebody is going to show up and somebody is going to get frustrated. I agree on the other points.
  11. GAWD. I HATE THOSE STUPID FREAKIN GOOFERS!
  12. Look up Dave K on this message board and email him. If you have tapes, he'll usually trade you.
  13. I really wish we could be at this game. I know one chant I'd be belting out in full force for Cory Schneider; BELARUS! BELARUS! BELARUS!
  14. I'll just be taken it as a sign and buying a plane, game, and fame ticket.
  15. 5 Minutes!!!! GO SIOUX!!!!!!
  16. I'm not flaming here RWTD, but would you make the same statement about someone getting home safe after driving blitzed? They could say the same thing that they didn't think it was all that bad or life threateining. After all they made it home. Or so they may think. After the fact review and miniscule punishment cannot be condoned. The WCHA should feel shame and now it apparently does as they are feeling societies backlash. It is always tougher to see the problem when you are already incensed and within the box.

    Final Five

  22. Here's a couple of direct quotes from Kevin during an interview on audio feed last fall to back up your comments Dagies: About the last two quotes Kevin said he always felt his destiny was in his own hands. He was never picked first and left out of the draft but never let those things bother him.
  23. Spiewak is by far my favorite player of all time. A real class act. He agreed to meeting my son for his fourth birthday. Blais and Berry set it up as Kevin was helping out with the camps. He's continued to agree to sign pictures/pucks etc. for my son (my son's been going to games since he was two and used to refer to Spiewak as his 'best buddy') I try to keep up with what is going on with him. Kevin was the epitome of speed kills. He won the ECHL All-star speed competition his rookie year so if Watkins can do it too great! Kevin has continued to be a great asset to the South Carolina Stingrays he plays for. He had a stellar season in points and ice time last season and was on track this year until he broke his foot and was out 12 games. He has picked up where he left off, but missing games like that can take you out of any all-star consideration. Here are a couple of comments that have been made about him over the last year or so:

    Pairwise

If it all ended today yes. It doesn't though thank the lord (I wanna watch more games) so no. Lots can happen yet. Lower seeds winning tourneys, teams dropping out of TUC, and even team comparisons can change yet with their COp's. Upsets almost always happen so none of the conferences are exempt. Let's put it this way. If lower seeded teams (and I mean not currently listed in the PWR top 16) all won their conf. tourneys the Sioux would most likely get pushed out.
