  1. The Pattyn announcement is rather anti-climactic. I'd rather see the final list of who's coming in.
  2. Freudian slip?
  3. "Phase I also includes spectator seating for approximately 1,500 and space for sports medicine." http://www.grandforksherald.com/content/und-athletics-construction-indoor-practice-facility-inches-closer
  4. At risk of repeating myself:
  5. "You can't fix stupid." -- Ron White
  6. I've said with a "Rough Riders" moniker you could put sleeve stripes denoting class onto a player's jersey.
  7. Recent regional headlines: HEADLINE: NDSCS student missing since May 1 HEADLINE: Drug charges filed against NDSCS student missing since May 1 First headline is heart-wrenching. Second headline fills in some (not all) of the blanks. The truth is somewhere between what each side tells you. (The media tells you the side that sells the most advertising space for them, normally the emotional side.)
  8. Yup. And that can change in an instant, in any sport.
  9. Wait a minute ... I thought fencing was something undertaken only by the black turtleneck and beret crowd*. *Tacit reference to how some NDSU fans used to refer to UND.
  10. Yup. Yup. And contrary to what some in St. Paul think, it can't be legislated away. Yup. So let's not downplay it and call it bullying. Call it what it is and file the assault charge. If the assault can be proven, it'll get dealt with by the criminal justice system. Problem. Solved.
  11. The other side to which I refer: Do we know the district has done nothing? Are they constrained as to what they can say publicly due to FERPA? (I won't link to FERPA so it won't be perceived as condescending*.) What is the other side? All we've heard is from a couple of kids and a mom with a Facebook account. As far a bullying, as a kid I was an easy target: poor household, heavier than I should've been, smartest (geeky) kid in class. I suffered my fair share of bullying. I had my fair share of bad days (like it appears this girl did). I get it. But I'm in no rush to judgment until I hear both sides. *There have been "pre madonnas" on this site so I linked cause celebre for clarity.
  12. I've seen Johnny Manziel before, but his name was Ryan Leaf.
  13. As in every situation, the truth is somewhere between the stories the two sides are giving. And as much as I hear about "bullying" lately I believe it's become the cause celebre for the media.
  14. Under the assumption that Poolman, Olson, Simonson, Johnson, and Schmaltz are coming in: The oldest (known) guys in the recruiting pipeline in order are: Chartrand (D), Rowe*, Pelnik (D), Yon, Voltin*, Poganski, Gardner Those guys will all be 18.5 years old or older on Aug 1, 2014. That's where my crazy "leave 22 at forward, bring in Chartrand" idea started. What also catches my eye is Yon's age. *Are those two really still coming in?
  15. Oilers make slick work of <opponent here>
  16. Heads he wins; tails you lose.
  17. OK, no Rocco. <shrug> So we need another forward ... or two ... (meaning I'm wondering if Sanderson will be here in the fall). Here's the crazy notion of the day: Leave Panzarella (D) at forward and bring in Chartrand (D) this fall. That puts the roster at 15F/8D/3G.
  18. You can't negotiate with an empty chair. The ND tribes never sat down to talk about ways UND could keep that moniker. Quite frankly, their loss. Proof? Northern Ute Tribe Chairman Gordon Howell: "“We are very proud that they use our name. It’s not just a name to us." The Utes see it with pride. The Sioux tribes? Nope. <-- Their loss.
  19. I'm pretty sure Kelley's full comment is, "Under advice of UND legal council, and until final resolution of this matter, my comment is 'no comment'."
  20. Stereotype or unfortunate reality? Regarding alcohol: Frequency of use among American Indians is generally less than the general population, but the quantity consumed when it is consumed is generally greater.* * Beals J, Spicer P, Mitchell CM, et al. (October 2003). "Racial disparities in alcohol use: comparison of 2 American Indian reservation populations with national data". Am J Public Health 93 (10): 1683–5. doi:10.2105/AJPH.93.10.1683. PMC 1448033. PMID 14534221. When an American Indian consumes alcohol it is consumed in greater quantity, leading to the "drunk" impression. Unfortunate, but also more than likely the source of the stereotype, and there's the source data / academic citation.
  21. The Pens-Rangers is coming down to who is out-goalie-ing whom. And it's Fleury winning the battle. Whodathunkit.
