“The feathers and other parts of the red-tailed hawk are considered sacred to many American indigenous people and, like the feathers of the bald eagle and golden eagle, are sometimes used in religious ceremonies and found adorning the regalia of many Native Americans in the United States; these parts, most especially their distinctive tail feathers, are a popular item in the Native American community.” Source: Collier, Julie (Spring 2003). "The Sacred Messengers". Cross Paths 6 (1). Mashantucket Pequot Museum. Archived from the original on 2007-06-22. Retrieved 20 June 2007 So, how do you do a hawk logo without introducing hawk “feathers and other parts” sacred to indigenous peoples?
-
But from a ... < gasp! > ... Republican? The horror.
-
Uh folks ... the feathers of the most common hawk in ND are considered ... sacred to many American indigenous peoples.
-
Uh, no Fetch, what's happening at U of Missouri is PC on display in all its finest grandeur.
-
I bet you get your wish ... but it'll morph from this logo ... http://vector.me/files/images/6/9/69970/und_fighting_sioux.png My bet: it'll "morph" from the old geometric UND logo to a geometric hawk (see: Atlanta Falcons) and then many will realize they've been had.
-
Nope. A UND president (Kupchella) brought it out and said, "Here it is."
-
Quit revealing the process!!! (And don't underestimate the power of human stupidity to mess this up.)
-
I'll take the under. There's no way it took them three whole minutes to pull out the file they've used at a dozen other universities dumping a Native name.
-
Truth.
-
They might punt.
-
Nope. Most have been taken down. It seems a youth hockey organization in Ontario owns it now. http://maplesofthawks.com/page.php?page_id=31975

No fair reading ahead.

I wonder if Dr. Kelley knows about that little gem/urban legend/spin.
-
How about if Ditka endorsed da Fightin' Nodaks?
-
So going with the generic, done at least a dozen times before by other schools in similar circumstances, consultant approved "idea" is critical thinking? Alrightythen ...
-
One minute: "Fire Kelley". Next minute: Give Kelley his (consultant approved) inoffensive bird mascot. Insane.
-
Here's better: Mike Ivall @M_IvallOJHLI Nov 1Thank You everyone for enjoying my Blackhawks design. If it ever happens, I would be happy and sad. Alas, I no longer own the rights to it. I bet Chicago of the NHL bought it to shelve it for when they need it. That means "NO" for UND.
-
Mike Ivall: The Most Ripped Off Man In The Hockey Concept World Folks, share this story. It is clear that there is about no possible way for UND to use that logo. Others have tried.
-
Will the students roll out the "Fire Kelley" banner again, right after they give Kelley his greatest win (the inoffensive bland bird mascot)?
-
The same student body that cheered a "Fire Kelley" sign is giving Kelley his greatest win: his inoffensive bird mascot.

Yup. Streamed is seldom "live" to the action. My phone has a built in FM radio (if I use the right headphones).

Although I'd love to see Ed Schafer at UND (and I've said it for years, just ask PCM), I just don't see the faculty accepting a Republican (even a moderate R like Ed) at the helm even with an 'interim' tag.
-
I just can't believe the students will send Dr. Kelley out with a win: they're handing him his PC, inoffensive bird mascot.
