I can't believe the students have been so suckered in by Dr. Kelley and his inoffensive bird mascot. Believe what you want (that logo that'll never happen, that 'hawks' stands as an abbreviation for something else) but when it is Hawks, dear students, Dr. Kelley won. And you, the students, handed it to him.

OK, I'll admit I chirped an opposing kicker from the north catwalk in Mussman's last home game. I chirped him about "don't push it" and "don't leave the club face open" as UNC lined up for a 30 yard FG to go into halftime. It was quite satisfying to have him kick the ball right at me, ... outside the (his) right post. He "left the club face open". He'd pushed it. The guys around me (including a GF cop) erupted in laughter with me. I got a "gesture" from the kicker.

Chicken dinner. Extra drum stick. Extra breast and wing plus two scoops of 'slaw.

A comparable drop in votes would not surprise me. Additionally, I suspect many of those whose first choice is gone will not vote this time.

Folks, the NCAA hasn't read their own policy. When it came out it said nicknames involving "race, ethnicity, or national origin" are the issue (I remember it as reno). So, if the NCAA was serious, or to be taken as anything more than arbitrarily and capriciously headhunting some low hanging fruit (see: small Midwestern school with some intense noise making opponents and a too nice hockey arena), Irish, Trojans, Spartans, Vandals, Maccabees, and a host of others would be getting the stink eye also. But, as Mel Brooks said, "It's good to be the king" and in this matter the NCAA is king.
