Rick Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 I wonder what would happen if the city of Grand Forks would have been named Sioux Falls, Sioux City or Sioux Forks? Instead of the Grand Cities....maybe it should be the Grand Sioux. I'd rather change the name of the city than to change the name of the U. Would the NCAA still be able to tell UND they have to change their name and logo? How could the NCAA tell a team that their name is hostile and abusive if the city they're located in also has the name Sioux in it? Would they require both the city and university to change their name? What If...... Quote
Diggler Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 If the town had Sioux in it, I'd hope UND's nickname would be different. It's so dorky when nickname is the same as town name. Like the Detroit Lake Lakers or Red Wing Wingers. Quote
Sioux-cia Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 ...or the Fargo Goners, Hillsboro Burros, Minot Knots, Dickenson Di, New Town Newbies, Crosby Stills and Crosses... Quote
The Sicatoka Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Jamestown Jimmies. Then there are the ever-popular MIAC schools: St. Thomas Tommies St. John's Johnnies St. Olaf Oles Quote
Diggler Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 The University of North Dakota Forks would be pretty awesome though. Especially if the mascots were a dish and a spoon. Quote
Rick Posted July 12, 2007 Author Posted July 12, 2007 We're getting sidelined here. I was just wonder what the NCAA would do if the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux was located in Sioux Falls or Sioux City? Would that matter? I don't see how they'd be able to say the UND Fighting Sioux are hostile and abusive without saying the the city the university resides in is hostile and abusive. Quote
The Sicatoka Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 How soon we forget: The NCAA went after IUP, Indiana University of Pennsylvania (Kupchella's alma mater), even though they were in the town of Indiana, PA, in Indiana County, PA, and called themselves the "Indians". Remember, an organization based in Indianapolis, Indiana, did this. Oh the irony. Quote

lakesioux Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 There were the Adams Atoms way back when. Ayr Air Rifles a little farther south. I like Lakers ... but also forget how dorky I am. Quote

Like the - University of (k)Iowa - (k)Iowa State University - North Dakota State University - South Dakota State University - University of South Dakota - University of North Dakota - University of Nebraska at Omaha Or even a word derived from a name like ... - University of Indiana - University of Illinois And they came out with the word "Iowa" or "Dakota" or "Indiana" or "Illinois" or "Omaha" on their jerseys? UND85 Posted August 2, 2007 Posted August 2, 2007 Maybe I should tell the NCOO that as a Christian I am opposed to the Duke BLUE DEVILS. It bothers me that people cheer for the enemy. Or maybe I should go out and get upset with pro baseball and the Reds because I think it discriminates against all of the other wonderful colors we have. The NFL has the Bears, they scare me and bears have been known to kill people. Let's get rid of them too. Quote

HockeyMom Posted August 2, 2007 Posted August 2, 2007 There were the Adams Atoms way back when. How long were the Lankin-Adams Bruins around. It was only a couple years, wasn't it? Man they threw together an amazing BB team in that time. Quote
Chief Illiniwek Supporter Posted August 2, 2007 Posted August 2, 2007 Or even a word derived from a name like ... - University of Indiana - University of Illinois Two things: actually, "Illinois" is a word derived from a word. Its the French-ification of the word "Illiniwek", which roughly means "people who speak our language" and can be loosely interpreted as equivilent to what we would presently call "mankind" or "the human race". And technically, the folks to the east of us call it "Indiana University". (Which allows their fellow Indianans at Purdue to put out bumper stickers, etc with the phrase "Purdue: THE Indiana University".) Maybe I should tell the NCOO that as a Christian I am opposed to the Duke BLUE DEVILS. It bothers me that people cheer for the enemy. Here's something I learned during the Illiniwek controversy: Originally, this had nothing to do with Satan or religion. The nickname was chosen shortly after WWI and honored a French regiment who wore blue uniforms. Another school that has a "devilish" nickname today despite very benign origins: the DePaul Blue Demons. Maybe I should tell the NCOO that as a Christian I am opposed to the Duke BLUE DEVILS. It bothers me that people cheer for the enemy.I agree, lets not go too far: the Bears wear Orange and Blue because George Halas went to Illinois. We'd get dragged right back into this with our colors.... Quote
