SiouxMD Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 The Gophers blew a 31-point third quarter lead to lose to Texas Tech 44-41 in the Insight Bowl. This was the largest comeback in Division I-A (FBS) bowl history. Wow. Will this cost Mason his job? Quote

This was the largest comeback in Division I-A (FBS) bowl history. Wow. Will this cost Mason his job? If Maturi hadn't signed him to a contract extension after last season, he would probably be fired. But unless some rich alum ponies up the money to buy out his contract, I can't imagine Minnesota could afford to buy out Mason AND come up with the money to hire a new coach. Quote
Shawn-O Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 What's just as hilarious is that Maturi just got an extension last summer as well. Quote
Diggler Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 It's pretty sad when the two big Minnesota football coaches would be out coached by Craig Dahl. Quote
BobIwabuchiFan Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 I'd like to think that there loss is somehow connected with the Greater Karma of the Fighting Sioux. For instance, coming to Grand Forks ranked #1 in the nation and then losing to Holy Cross at the Home of the Fighting Sioux. Combine this with the Maturi press conference to kiss up to the PCers and the NCAA by stating no games to be scheduled with the 'hostile and abusive' UND team and it seems only a fitting end to the whole year for the gophers. Go Sioux! Happy New Year BobIwabuchiFan Quote
Let'sGoHawks! Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 I saw this on Sportscenter and chuckled. UMN-TC ends up with a 6-7 record. What a huge choke job though, similar to the Holy Cross game. Quote
PCM Posted December 30, 2006 Posted December 30, 2006 And now we know the real reason Minnesota doesn't want to play UND. Quote

Mason is out as the head football goofer news conference at 5PM tonight Quote
UND92,96 Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 Mason is out as the head football goofer news conference at 5PM tonight From a football perspective, it's a great move. But it runs contrary to what the twin cities sports media have been saying all year, because Mason is owed four more years' salary. Somebody must have come up with about six million extra bucks. petey23 Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 Maybe some gopher alum will pony up some big bucks and bring in some high profile coaches for the basketball and football prgrams!! How about Bobby Knight and Lou Holtz?? that would bring some excitement to the twin cities and you would have simultaneously the cleanest basketball rpogram and the dirtiest football program in the NCAA!!! I wonder if they could recover some of that money by calling up alumni and say "Tired of the same old mediocre football? Donate now and help us bring quality back to the program!" And they used whatever that got them to offset the Mason contract. Still, I agree, Mason should have been fired last year (2005) and not this year. Quote
Smoggy Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 They are smart down there buyout one coach for 1.3 million now a second for 4 million FSN reported during the Wild game that the buyout was for 2 million. It was Strouhan (?) of the Strib that said this and he figured an alum told UM-TC that he'd cover the cost. Quote
