Does anyone know who has been offered for the class of 07 in basketball?

Women have offered Corey Lof 6'1'' athletic forward from Detroit Lakes. She is also considering Mankato (former DL kid is an asst. coach). She didn't like the AC.

That is all that has been offered between both programs?

With a new coach, I suspect inside information may be more difficult to come by for awhile than it was during the Glas regime. I haven't heard anything regarding offers to high school players, although presumably there have been some.

On the women's side, there are just two seniors this season--Jahner and Maffin. There are already two verbal commitments--Kirstie Gillet from Dakota Prairie, and Andrea LaFrance from Bismarck Century. I would strongly suspect that Jessica Kielpinski from Mandan has been offered, but there's not much of a history of Mandan players coming to UND for women's basketball so she may be a longshot. There are at least two outstanding local juniors in Kamille Wahlin from Crookston and Ashley Privatsky from Devils Lake who would be huge gets for UND. UND seems to have a ton of intangibles going for it with regard to Wahlin--three of her siblings will be at UND this year; her high school coach (Eric Schmidt) is now at UND; and it would allow her to play very close to home. With regard to Privatsky, UND has done exceptionally well with Devils Lake players (both DL High and Lake Region) during the Roebuck era.

I don't mean to be inflammatory and this is sincerely not meant to be mean ... but I'm amazed at the lack of interest in UND's Men's basketball program.

If this board is any indiciation, and it should be, prior to this thread the last Men's basketball comment was on August 2nd. Since then there have been multiple posts on women's hockey, baseball and the soccer program.

By contrast the NDSU has had numerous new threads and muliptle posts on just Men's basketball over that same time period.

Yes ... it is a slow period for basketball but ... it is the end of the AAU season, recruiting, new season just upon us, new coach ... i.e. there is plenty to talk to.

This thread was started asking about the '07 basketball recruiting class and there are more posts pertaining to the women's program than the men's.

I know success breads interest but my goodness!

I'd love to talk about men's basketball every day, but if there's no news, what is there to talk about? There was all kinds of talk during the coaching search, but now that Jones is in place, how many times can we talk about the health of Koenig, Bledsoe and Harkins? How many times can we talk about how disappointing the past decade has been? The posts regarding women's hockey, for example, have to do with one topic. It's the same topic that dominated the men's basketball discussion until a few months ago.

In addition to the obvious of the fact that women's program has been much better and more fun to watch for years, the other difference is that many of the prospects are local and regional players who some of us are familiar with, and as such, it's much easier to speculate on recruiting. On the men's side, as far as I know, there simply aren't many kids in our region who are legit prospects. I have no reason to know anything about a kid from Wisconsin or southern Minnesota or Iowa unless his name has been leaked on this board.

92,96 - Your response was right on target. I think another recruit or two will be announced quite soon so we will be able to discuss their likely contribution, etc. Then, when everyone gets to school, someone will likely be able to tell us how various players are looking in pick up games.

Not much else to talk about now! Wish there was!

The Women's BBall roster for 2006-07 is updated on the sports page. I wasn't as surprised about Anna Leigh Brady, as she was with the team some this summer for different things, but do you suppose Jeanmarie Berg is a walk-on? When our team played Hatton-Northwood last season, Jeanmarie was just out of her cast. She had broken her wrist earlier. She is a good defender. A defensive specialist, I'd say.

Wonder if anyone of the new 5 will red-shirt?

What can anyone tell us about both Berg and Brady? I am not familiar with them.

Do we know how healthy Sannes' knee is?

I would think that either Seay or Bergan along with Youngblut might be red-shirted - and maybe the two walk-ons. But I also thought that Gene would red-shirt Baagason last year to give her an extra year to mature and make the adjustment to college ball. I thought the same thing about Beck the year before. Obviously, Roebuck knows much more about who he should have sit out a year than I do! Do not read into this that I am second-guessing him!

How many team members can dress? And can dressing members be switched up during the season? With Amy gone, I imagine either Jossy or Alys to be maybe a relief to the new point guard position? I would look for Alys to be the one to fill in, but could be way off.

Our team having played against both Anna Leigh and Jeanmarie, I am confident in their individual strengths adding to the Sioux team. Both are hard-workers (duh! Roebuck would not suit them otherwise) and dedicated ball players!

Jahner is going to be expected to play most of the game. Seay may help relieve her sometimes but they have other guards capable of bringing the ball up that are not freshman. So at the beginning I think they will go with experience and work Seay in as the season goes on. But when LaFrance comes to town, I can imagine she will play point and will be relieved by Seay.

I make a comment about the lack of interest on Men's BBall.

UND9296 and UNDFan responded defending the lack of response as timing.

This thread has 14 respones .... 8 discuss changes/updates/additions to the Women's Basketball Team and -0- responses as in None, Nada, The Null Set, Nothing discuss changes/updates/additions to the Men's Basketball Team.

IMO this goes to re-inforce the point ... the interst in Men's Basketball at North Dakota hovers somewhere around ... Nothing

I haven't noticed much discussion of ANY basketball on either the basketball forum on d2football.com, or on d2basketball.com. Furthermore, aside from perhaps USD and UNO, do any NCC/NSIC teams even have fan sites? The point being, if you're basing your opinion on lack of message board discussion--and apparently you are--couldn't you make the exact same accusations of any NCC/NSIC program? Trust me, there is interest in UND men's basketball. Certainly not as much interest as there was in the early 90's, but long stretches of mediocrity have a tendency to cause interest to diminish. I'd be somewhat concerned if there was a lot of discussion right now, because that would likely signify that there wasn't much interest in the football team.

The talent level appears to be better than it was last year, assuming players such as Koenig, Bledsoe and Harkins can get and stay healthy. Kruse, Dryburgh and hopefully Boyce should be nice additions. If the team can quickly adjust to the new offensive and defensive philosophies, they could surprise a lot of people around the league.

It wasn't in the online edition of the Herald so I can't provide a link, but per today's Herald UND adds two juco players--5'11" guard Ervin Youmans from Eastern Arizona College, and 6'6" forward Emmanuel Little from Kaskaskia (Illinois) Community College. Youmans averaged 18.3 ppg last year, and was named all-region. Little averaged 19 points and 8 boards per game last year. Both appear to be fairly well-travelled, and any time you get players this late you have to wonder exactly why they're still available, but they do appear to be talented.

Youmans was New Mexico's leading scorer in high school at Hobbs (a little info on Hobbs' basketball history here -- 93% home win% since 1950, higher attendance than Sioux games, 15 state titles)

He was a walk-on Freshman at Texas El-Paso until January of '05. He went to EAC "to increase his stock" until this Spring, when he was recruited by and signed with Mercer. Apparently, that fell through late.

Thanks unique name + yahoo + google, but I don't understand why all Herald stories aren't online. They all must be in a computer for typesetting... maybe that will get better as the Forum takes over.

Thanks, Jim. I'm now pretty excited about Youmans' potential. I would, however, be interested to know why he didn't end up at Mercer?

I don't know much about basketball and normally I stick to posting on the hockey chat, but if the basketball team is looking for some talent when they go D-1 then I suggest they check out Kyle Smendziuk of All-Saints here in Ottawa, Ontario. I work with Kyle's dad and he informed that his son wants to pursue pilot training in university. I told his dad about the UND Aerspace School and the kid was impressed with what he read online.

Just do an online search on Kyle's name and you will see that he has been a factor both provincially and nationally. As a 16 year old he made Ontario's U-17 team and they won the Gold at this years national championships. Kyle shut down the 6'11" British Columbia center (Robert Sacre a Gonzaga recruit) in the final game. Anyone who knows the coaches or recruiters might want to pass this info along. ???

Thanks for the info. I will make sure the BB staff gets the info. I tried to learn a little more about Smendziuk on the web but couldn't find anything about his current height and weight. I know he was 6'4" a couple of years ago. Any more info would be good. Per the quote above, he was guarding a 6'11" guy. Does that mean he plays center on his team?
